1991년에 제임스 패터슨과 피터 김은 ‘미국이 진실을 말한 날’이라는 책을 썼습니다. 이 책은 포스트모던 시대의 통찰과 법칙을 제시해 주었습니다. 흥미롭게도 처음 시작은 참여자 익명성을 보장하는 한 광범위한 여론 조사 연구로부터였다고 합니다. 이 책이 알려주는 결과는 매우 충격적이었습니다. ‘모든 사람이 자신만의 윤리, 즉 각자의 십계명’을 만들어 내고 있었던 것입니다. 그 규칙들은 나름의 삶을 통한 개인적 생각이나 의견, 경험을 토대로해서 만들어 지는 것이었습니다.

33년이 지난 지금도 그 연구 결과가 크게 달라지지 않았다는 사실이 놀랍습니다. 우리는 점점 더 포스트모던해진 시대에 살며, 이 세대는 각자의 선호도에 따라 규칙을 자유롭게 만들어도 된다는 생각을 한다는 것입니다. 예를 들면 다음과 같습니다.
– 안식일을 지키는 것이 의미가 없다고 생각합니다.
– 권리주장을 하지 않는 사람의 물건은 훔쳐도 됩니다.
– 실제 상대에게 피해를주지 않는 한, 나에게 필요하다면 거짓말을 해도 무관합니다.
– 기회가 주어진다면 배우자도 나를 속일 수 있기 때문에 내가 배우자를 속이는 것에 대해 문제가 없습니다.
– 나는 근무하는 5일 중에 하루 정도는 늑장을 부리며 아무것도 하지 않을 것입니다.

이에 비추어 볼 때, 그리스도인들은 끊임없이 세상의 가치관과 대립됩니다. 이 충돌에 맞서기 위해 우리 그리스도인들은 연합해야 합니다. 또한 복음을 위해 꿋꿋함과 용기를 가지기 위해 싸워야 합니다. 어떤 사람들에게는 기독교가 그저 ‘하라’나 ‘하지 말라’라는 걸 지키는 걸로 생각하지만 우리는 그 이상이 되어야 합니다.

우리가 이 경주를 할 때, 저는 우리가 열심과 열정을 가지고 달리기를 기도합니다. 부지런하고 끈기 있게 달릴 수 있기를 바랍니다. 복음은 우리가 어쩔 수 없이 해야 한다고 말하는 것이 아니라 우리가 참 신앙을 위해 기꺼이 할 일을 찾아야 한다고 말합니다. 우리 교회가 예배에서나 책임감있는 일상을 통해서나 살아있는 본보기가 되기를 진심으로 바랍니다.

The Day America Told the Truth

In 1991, James Patterson and Peter Kim wrote a book called The Day America Told the Truth. The book provided insight and laid down the law for postmodern times and fascinatingly, it started as a study based on extensive opinion surveys that guaranteed the participant’s anonymity. However, the book’s results were quite shocking as it observed that ‘no moral consensus existed at all…. Everyone was making up their moral codes—their Ten Commandments.’ These rules were based on personal thoughts, opinions, and experiences that dictated how they had lived their lives.

Fast forward 33 years, and it’s incredible how some things never change. We are living in a time that has become more postmodern, and this generation is more prone to living based on the belief that we are free to make our own rules based on our preferences. Interestingly, the results from the book are still relevant today. Examples include:
– I don’t see the point in observing the Sabbath.
– I will steal from those who won’t miss it.
– I will lie when it suits me, so long as it doesn’t cause any real damage.
– I will cheat on my spouse—after all, given the chance, they will do the same.
– I will procrastinate at work and do nothing about one full day every five.

Reflecting on this, the world’s reality is that we are everything that the world is not. Christians constantly battle this clash, and brothers and sisters in Christ must unite to fight against it. We must also fight the lack of boldness and courage for the Gospel in some Christian circles. For some, Christianity has become a list of what to do and what not to do, but we know this is not the case.

As we run this race, I pray that we run with zeal and passion. May we run with ever more diligence and persistence. The Gospel is about what we desire and want to do rather than what we think we are forced to do. May our church be a living example of a place that tells and shows the truth amidst all our worship, weekly routines, and daily responsibilities.
