오늘은 종교개혁주일입니다. 마틴 루터가 독일 비텐베르크 성당 정문에 95개조 반박문을 붙인 날이 10월 31일이지요. ‘오직 성경'(Sola Scriptura)을 외치며 말씀으로 돌아가고자 했던 개혁자들의 뜨거운 마음이 떠오릅니다. 잠든 시대를 깨우는 것은 언제나 말씀의 능력이었습니다. 그리고 그 능력의 뿌리를 따라가면, 사도행전 19장의 에베소 ‘두란노 서원’을 만나게 됩니다.

사도 바울은 완고한 유대인들을 피해 두란노 서원에서 2년 동안 날마다 말씀을 강론했습니다. 놀랍게도 그 시간은 모두가 일을 멈추고 쉬는 뜨거운 한낮, 오전 11시부터 오후 4시까지였습니다. 바울은 새벽부터 일어나 천막을 만들고, 모두가 쉬는 시간에도 지치지 않는 열정으로 말씀을 가르쳤습니다. 그의 삶은 ‘오직 말씀’을 향한 불꽃 같은 헌신이었습니다. 그러나 바울 못지않게 놀라운 이들은 그 말씀을 듣기 위해 모여든 성도들이었습니다. 가장 피곤한 시간에 잠을 쫓고 분주함을 뒤로한 채 말씀 앞에 나아갔던 그들의 열정이 있었기에 ” 유대인이나 헬라인이나 다 주의 말씀을 듣더라”는 부흥의 역사가 일어날 수 있었습니다.

지난 10년간 베델교회에서 제자훈련을 하며, 저는 베델 안에 바로 그 ‘두란노 서원’이 있다고 믿습니다. 훈련의 자리에서 함께 울고 웃던 순간들, 팬데믹 중에도 줌(Zoom) 화면으로 눈을 맞추며 말씀을 나누던 시간, 설교 녹취와 나눔 속에서 삶이 변화된 간증들—그 모든 기억이 마음에 깊이 남아 있습니다. 첫 제자반은 온 셀식구가 함께 등록해 매주 가정에서 모였고, 누구도 여유가 있어서 그 자리에 앉아 있지 않았습니다. 퇴근 후 지친 몸으로 도로를 뚫고 오시던 발걸음, 자녀를 등하교시키며 시간을 쪼개 오시던 걸음, 깊은 밤 잠을 줄여 숙제하고 말씀을 암송하던 그 헌신을 주님은 다 기억하십니다.

말씀이 삶이 되고, 삶이 말씀이 되기 위해 기꺼이 수고하시는 여러분이야말로 오늘의 진정한 개혁가들입니다. 500년 전 개혁자들이 외쳤던 ‘오직 말씀’의 구호가 여러분의 삶 속에서 살아 숨 쉬고 있습니다. 베델의 소망은 다른 곳에 있지 않습니다. 오늘 말씀을 사모하며 나아오신 당신, 바로 당신이 베델의 소망입니다. 여러분 한 분 한 분이 오늘날 베델에 세워진 ‘두란노 서원’의 주역이며, 그 헌신 위에서 “주의 말씀이 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻는” 놀라운 역사가 우리 교회 위에 계속될 것을 믿습니다.

The Tyrannus Vow of Bethe

Today is Reformation Sunday. October 31st is the day when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Church in Germany. It reminds us of the passionate hearts of the Reformers who cried “Sola Scriptura”—”Scripture alone”—and longed to return to the Word. In truth, what awakens a sleeping generation has always been the power of the Word. And when we trace that power, we arrive at Acts 19, at the School of Tyrannus in Ephesus.

In Ephesus, the Apostle Paul, facing hardened Jews, withdrew to the School of Tyrannus and for two years taught daily without rest. Amazingly, those sessions took place during the hottest hours, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when all others rested. Paul rose early, worked making tents through the morning, and during the rest hours taught with tireless passion. His whole life was a blazing devotion to “the Word alone.” But just as great as Paul—perhaps greater—were the nameless believers who gathered then to hear the Word. In the most weary hours, they fought off sleep, left behind busyness, and came before the Word. Because of their passion, “all the Jews and Greeks heard the Word of the Lord,” and revival began.

For the past ten years of discipleship training at Bethel Church, I dare say Bethel has its own School of Tyrannus. My unforgettable memories are those moments of sharing, laughing, and weeping together in training. The first discipleship group registered as a whole cell and met weekly in members’ homes instead of at church. During the pandemic, we looked at each other through Zoom screens and shared the Word. I remember those who struggled with memorization, and the testimonies of lives restored and changed through the Word—all deeply engraved in my heart. One thing is certain: not one person joined because they had extra time. The Lord remembers every weary step after long workdays, every rushed moment between school drop-offs and pickups, every late night spent studying and tremblingly memorizing Scripture. The Lord remembers every effort and devotion.

You, who labor so that the Word becomes life and life becomes the Word, are the true reformers renewing the Church today. The cry of the Reformers—”Scripture alone”—is alive in you. The hope of Bethel lies nowhere else. You, who come longing for the Word—you are the hope of Bethel. Each of you is part of the School of Tyrannus being built in our midst. And upon your burning devotion, we believe this promise continues: “The Word of the Lord grew and prevailed mightily.”
