우크라이나 대통령 젤렌스키가 백악관을 방문해서 바이든 미국 대통령을 만났습니다. 거의 1년전에 시작된 러시아-우크라이나간 전쟁이 장기화될 조짐이 보이자 미국에 원조 요청을 하기 위한 방문이라고 합니다. 유엔에서도 젤렌스키 대통령은 국제사회의 관심을 모으며, 한 나라의 독립과 자주를 지켜 달라고 호소했습니다. 영국 BBC 방송은, 젤렌스키 대통령의 유엔연설이 2차 대전 당시 처칠 수상의 연설에 견줄만한 것이었다고 평가하고 있습니다. 러시아와 우크라이나의 전쟁은 두 나라만의 문제가 아니었습니다. 이로 인해 경제적으로 파탄에 이른 나라들이 부지기수이며, 천정부지로 치솟는 물가를 잡기에 온 세계가 난리입니다.

국제 위기 전문가로 명성 있는 하버드 대학의 그래함 엘리슨(Graham Allison) 교수는 “푸틴이 신의 도움으로 벼락을 맞아 죽을 경우, 나는 절대 찬성한다.”라고 했습니다. 아무리 생각해도 명분 없는 전쟁을 하는 러시아 대통령 푸틴을 향한 시원한 일갈이라 생각합니다. 우크라이나 내 러시아 사람들도 원치 않는 강압적인 정복은 명분을 잃었으며, 단지 서구세계와 나토(NATO)를 견제하기 위한 목적으로 전쟁을 일으킨 것은 설득력을 잃었습니다. 설사 그것이 러시아 사람들을 위한 정치적 목적이라 치더라도 1년이 넘어가는 전쟁을 보면서, 과연 누구를 위한 전쟁인지 안타까울 뿐입니다.

우리는 가끔 못된 짓을 하는 사람에 대해 “벼락 맞을 놈!” 이라며 화를 냅니다. 하나님도 악한 짓을 하는 인간을 더 이상 못 봐주고, 벼락을 내린다는 뜻입니다. 그러나 실질적으로 그런 일은 잘 일어나지 않는지, 엘리슨 교수는 “신의 도움으로…”라는 표현을 썼습니다. 하나님은 내 대신 벼락을 내리는 일은 잘하지 않습니다. 그 이유는 단 한 가지, 하나님은 못된 인간들을 대신해 벼락을 맞을 인물을 준비했기 때문입니다. 오늘 성탄절에 오신 예수 그리스도는 우리 대신 “벼락 맞기 위해” 오신 분입니다. “하나님의 도움으로…” 오신 분입니다.

그러므로 주께서 친히 징조를 너희에게 주실 것이라 보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그의 이름을 임마누엘이라 하리라 (사 7:14)

성탄이 기쁜 날인 이유는, 예수님이 우리의 죄 값을 치르는 십자가를 지기 위해 오신 날이기 때문입니다. 성탄은 우리 구원의 시작이며, 하나님 약속의 성취입니다. 오늘 맞이하는 성탄이 하나님의 도움으로 우리 대신 벼락 맞는 구세주의 탄생이 이루어진 날임을 기억하고, 복음의 감격이 더욱 새롭게 다가오는 복된 날 되기를 기도합니다.

Christmas Struck by Lightning

Ukrainian’s President Zelenskyi visited the White House this week to meet with U.S. President Biden. This is a visit to request for support for war that started almost a year ago between Russia and Ukraine. It’s becoming a prolonged war. President Zelensky appealed to UN, gathering international support, to ask for help to sustain independence of their nation. England’s BBC reported that his speech was comparable to that of Prime Minister Churchill’s World War II speech. Russia-Ukraine war is not just a problem between two countries. The war has caused some countries to near financial bankruptcy. The entire world is in turmoil, trying to find some stability to soaring prices. Famed international crisis expert Graham Allison of Harvard University said, “Unless God helps us, lightning strikes and Putin dies – which would be great as far as I’m concerned”. I’m pretty sure he was venting about president Putin’s war that is without cause. There is no justification for this coercive conquest that neither Ukrainians nor Russians want. Starting a war to suppress the Western world and NATO is no longer persuasive. As this war surpasses a year, you wonder in frustration who this war is really for, even if it is for Russia’s political reasons.

Sometimes we become angry at people who do bad things and say, “You should be struck by lightning”. It means that even God will not put up with bad behavior and strike with lightning. But this rarely happens in real world. Professor Allison expressed “Unless God helps us…”. God rarely strikes lightning for our sake. There’s only one reason for that. God had already prepared someone to be struck in place of bad people. Jesus Christ who came on Christmas Day, came to be struck by lightning on our behalf. He came because “God helps us…”.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.(Is 7:14)

The reason Christmas is joyful is because of the thankfulness we have for Jesus. He came to carry the cross to pay the price for our sins. Christmas is the beginning of our salvation and the fulfillment of God’s promise. Remember, Christmas that we celebrate today is the day of fulfillment of our Savior’s birth. He came to be struck in our place. I pray that it is a day that the Gospel touches all of us anew.
