1월 1일 주일이 2023년, 새해의 시작입니다. 1일이 새해 첫날이인 동시에 예배의 첫날이라는 것은 부인할 수 없는 메시지입니다. 군더더기 없이 깔끔한 메시지입니다. 1일이 주일이고, 새해 첫날이 첫 주일 예배입니다. 여기에 토를 달 것이 없습니다. 새해 첫날에 무엇을 우선적으로 해야 할까요? 새해에는 무슨 단추부터 끼워야 할까요? 새해는 어떤 기도로 시작해야 할까요? 아무리 생각해 보아도, 다른 메시지를 생각할 수가 없습니다. 코로나 이후 원년을 2023년으로 선포합니다. 코로나가 아직 어른거리는 팬데믹의 끝자락에 있긴 하지만, 모름지기 현장 예배를 재개하고 모두 다시 만나는 기쁨을 누리는 이 시간에 포스트 코로나 원년을 선포하는 이유는, 새해를 맞이하여 그동안 놓쳤던 은혜들을 사모하며 심기일전하고픈 마음이 앞서기 때문입니다.

새해의 주제도 [Always Be There]로 정했습니다. 이제는 더 이상 양보 없는 예배의 자리, 거기에 있겠다는 선포이며, 더 나아가 다시는 은혜받는 일을 미루지 않고, [거기에 있겠습니다]라는 약속이기도 합니다. 모든 교회들이 코로나 이후 뚜껑을 열어보니, 교인들의 20-30%가 현장에 나오지 않는다고 합니다. 우리 교회도 예외는 아닙니다. 특별히 많은 성도가 편리를 추구하는 성향이 강해졌다고 합니다. ‘은혜’ 받기보다는 ‘편리’가 먼저고, ‘비전’ 보다는 ‘현실’이 앞서며, ‘예배’보다는 ‘편함’이 우선이 되었다는 것입니다. 우리에게도 늘 이런 도전은 있었지만, 포스트 코로나 이후 더욱 뚜렷하게 그 성향이 돌출되었습니다. 교회가 예배의 현장에 좀 더 집중할 수 있도록 시설을 확충하고 개선해 가는 것은 당연히 기울여야 할 노력입니다.

그러나 편해야만 예배드리고, 불편하면 옮기고, 멀면 그만하고 식은 아니라고 생각합니다. 때론 하나님께서 우리 삶 속에 광야를 허락하셔서 마땅히 있어야 할 본연의 자리로 부르시듯, 우리의 불편함은 무엇이 더 소중한 것인지를 분별하게 하시는 하나님의 시험일 수 있습니다. 그래서 2023년을 우리의 유용성(availability)을 100% 회복하는 포스트 코로나 원년으로 정한 것입니다. 흩어졌던 마음들이 제자리로, 산만했던 우선순위도 제자리로, 여기저기 달아났던 마음들도 제자리로 100% 돌아오는 원년이기를 바라면서 거기에 있겠습니다(Always Be There!) 외치며, 한 해를 시작합니다.

새해의 축복은 항상 거기에서 우리의 자리를 지킬 때 가능할 것입니다. 예배의 자리, 섬김의 자리, 기도의 자리를 지킵시다. 늘 그 자리에 있는 사람들이 됩시다. 수색 작전 명단에 오르는 자들이 아니라, 주위에 잃어버린 자들을 솔선수범 찾아 나서는 자들이 됩시다. 새해에는 거기에 있어 주십시오. 헌신의 자리에, 셀모임의 자리에, 눈물의 기도 자리에, 다시 사모하는 예배의 자리에 있어 주십시오. Always be there!

Always Be There!

January 1st, this Lord’s Day, is the beginning of New Year. 1st is the first day of the New Year. It also happens to be the first worship of the year, which gives an undeniable message. It sends a very clear message. January 1st is the Lord’s Day, and this first day is also the first worship of the year. No questions asked. What is the first thing you do on the first day of New Year? Which button will you start with in the new year? What prayer will you start the new year with? No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to think of a different message. I proclaim that 2023 is the first post-Covid year. Covid still lurks, and the end of the pandemic lingers. All in-person worship resumes with joy of being together. We proclaim first post-Covid year as we approach new year with longing for the lost blessings and desire to turn over a new leaf.

Our new year’s motto is [Always Be There]. It is a proclamation that we will be in the place of worship without giving up. We will be present with no compromises. We promise that [we will be there]. In churches after Covid, when assessed, 2-30% of members do not attend in-person worship. Our church is no exception. In particular, many believers are looking for convenience. Their priority is ‘convenience’ over ‘receiving grace.’ ‘Reality’ over ‘vision.’ ‘Comfort’ over ‘worship’. We always had this kind of challenges. This tendency has become even more evident post-pandemic. In order for worshipers to better focus, we put efforts into improving the place of worship.

However, desire to worship only when comfortable and to move away when it isn’t, and to stop going if too far is not how we ought to worship. Sometimes, God allows wilderness in our lives to call us back to our place. Through hardship, God could be testing us to discern what is important. Therefore, 2023 as post-pandemic year, we have called for 100% restoration of our attendance(availability). We will begin the new year shouting “Always Be There!” with hopes that scattered hearts will gather in their rightful place. Our distracted priorities will be put back in place. Our hearts that have gone astray will return 100% to its place.

Blessings of new year is possible when we are in place. Let’s be present in our place of worship, place of serving, and place of prayer. Let’s be that person who is always there. Don’t be the one on the search list. Instead, be the person searching out for others who are lost around you. In the new year, always be there. Be in the place of dedication, cell group sharing, place of tearful prayers, and in the place of worship. Always be there!
