아마, 교회 안에서 가장 많이 오용되는 단어 중의 하나가 ‘부흥’이 아닐까 싶습니다. 교회 사이즈가 커지면, “부흥했다”라고 쉽게 말합니다. 시작보다는 결과를 두고 쓰는 단어가 된 것 같습니다. 그래서 성공이라는 단어와 바꿔 쓸 수 있는 말로, 부흥이란 말을 쓰면서 비즈니스가 성공하고, 기업의 규모가 늘어나고, 심지어 교회의 교인 수가 늘고 성장하면, 부흥이라는 말을 사용하게 되었나 봅니다. 그러나, 엄밀히 말하면 부흥은 규모의 크기를 측정하는 말은 아닙니다. 시작한 일의 결말을 본 후, 이해타산을 계산한 후 잉여가 발생하였을 때 쓰는 경제 용어는 아닙니다.

부흥은 자신의 무능함을 깨닫는 것이고, 인간 사회의 총체적인 타락과 그 실체에 대한 인정에서 시작되는 것입니다. 30여 년 전 뉴욕 맨해튼에 리디머교회(Redeemer Presbyterian Church)를 개척하여 가장 영향력 있는 교회 중의 하나로 성장시키고 은퇴하신 팀 켈러 목사님이 최근에 한국을 다녀오며 하셨던 말씀이 인상적입니다. “지금 한국 교회는 우리 미국 교회보다 ‘부흥’에 가깝습니다.”라고 하시면서 그 이유를 이같이 말씀하셨습니다. “왜냐하면, 한국 교회 지도자들이 지금 교회가 쇠락하고 있다고 자각하고 기도해야 한다고 이구동성으로 말하고 있기 때문입니다.” 부흥의 본질을 확실히 짚고 하시는 말씀입니다. 그런 의미에서 부흥의 동의어는 성공보단 ‘소망’이 맞는다고 봅니다. 앞이 깜깜할 때, 나의 미래는 있는가, 무너진 나의 상황에 소망이 있는가를 겸손히 묻기 시작할 때, 부흥의 싹은 돋기 시작한다고 믿습니다.

1907년 한국에 있었던 평양 대부흥은 시기적으로 나라를 잃고 가장 힘들었던 위기 속에 시작되었습니다. 당시 감리교 무스 (J. R. Moose) 선교사는 한국은 “의지할 곳 도무지 없소. 이 땅에서 복음을 전할 수 있는 황금 같은 시기”라고 말했습니다. 미국에서의 대각성 운동 역시, 예일대에는 크리스천의 학생 수가 소수에 지나지 않았고, 앰허스트 대학(Amherst College)과 쌍벽을 이루는 명문 윌리암스 대학(Williams College)에는 성찬식을 조롱하는 축제까지 여는 사회적 분위기 속에서 위기의식과 함께 일어났었습니다. 최근에 하버드 대학 교목에 무신론자 그렉 엡스타인(Greg Epstein)을 임명한 것이 화제가 되었습니다. 물론 학교 내 20개가 넘는 종교단체들을 관장하는 면에서 중립적인 요소가 크게 작용했다고 볼 수 있지만, 애초에 하버드 대학이 목사를 키워내기 위해서 세워진 학교라는 것을 생각해 볼 때, 채플린(chaplain, 교목)에 무신론자를 세운 것은 시대적, 영적 위기를 보여주는 단적인 예가 아닐 수 없습니다. 2015년 미대법원에서 동성결혼을 합법화한 이후 급격히 찾아온 영적 도덕적 타락은 하나님 앞에 엎드릴 수 있는 부흥의 기회라고 해석할 수 있습니다. 그래서 부흥의 핵심은 이 위기의식 속에 하나님 앞에 엎드려 죄를 토하는 회개입니다. 부흥의 동의어는 회개입니다. 회개하면 소망이 있습니다.

Synonym for Revival

Perhaps, one of the most widely used word in church may be revival. When a church grows in size, it is easily said, “there’s been a revival”. The word has become descriptive of a result rather than a beginning. Revival has become interchangeable with a word success, like business becomes successful with increase in size. That’s probably why increase in members and growth of a church uses the word revival. However, strictly speaking, revival is not a word to measure a size. It is not a word to use after work has been finished and when there’s surplus based on our measurement of understanding.

Revival begins with recognition of one’s own inability and society’s total depravity. I was impressed by what retired Pastor Tim Keller, who founded Redeemer Presbyterian Church about 30 years ago in Manhattan and grew it to become one of the most influential churches, said after visiting Korea recently. “Currently, Korean Churches are closer to ‘revival’ than our American churches” and gave his reason. “The reason is that Korean church leaders are aware of current deterioration of churches. All are proclaiming that we must pray.” He is definitely speaking of nature of revival. From that perspective, synonym for revival is hope rather than success. Revival begins to sprout when you begin to ask humbly if there’s hope in your fallen situation, and when you ask if there’s a future when everything seem so dark.

Korea’s Pyung-Yang Great Revival in 1907 began in crisis when we lost our country. Methodist missionary J.R. Moose said at the time that Korea “has no one to depend on. It is a golden time to spread the gospel”. America’s Great Awakening took place during a crisis in society when Christian students were a minority at Yale University. Amherst College and neighboring Williams College held a festival to mock communion. Recently, Harvard University’s appointment of an atheist Greg Epstein as Chaplain became a hot topic. Perhaps, they were seeking a neutral element, considering that there are over 20 different religious groups in the university. However, when you consider that, in the beginning, Harvard was a school to raise up pastors, selecting an atheist as a Chaplain is an example that our society is in crisis. U.S. Supreme Court legalized the same sex marriage in 2015. Since then, spiritual and moral deterioration came suddenly. This is the time for revival when we must kneel before God. The heart of revival is to kneel before God in repentance. Synonym for revival is repentance. Where there is repentance, there is hope.
