미국 땅이 넓고 넓다지만 아무리 달려도 끝이 없을 것같이 펼쳐지는 지평선과 광활한 대지를 보면서, 한국 사람 다 데려다 놓아도 충분히 살 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 넓다는 생각 다음에는 그 넓은 들판에 여기저기 평화롭게 풀을 뜯어 먹는 검은 소, 블랙 앵거스들을 보면서, ‘만족’이라는 생각이 떠올랐습니다. 내가 저 소라면 끝없이 펼쳐지는 들판이 내 밥상이고, 싱싱하게 자란 들풀들이 다 내 밥인데, “내가 부족함이 없으리로다”라고 저절로 고백하게 될 것 같았습니다. 무엇이 부족해서 옆에 있는 다른 소들보다 더 많이 먹겠다고 싸우겠습니까? 무엇이 아쉬워서 오늘은 무엇을 먹으며, 내일은 무엇을 먹을까 염려하겠습니까? 예수님의 산상설교 말씀이 기억납니다. “염려하여 이르기를 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실까 무엇을 입을까 하지 말라 이는 다 이방인들이 구하는 것이라 너희 하늘 아버지께서 이 모든 것이 너희에게 있어야 할 줄을 아시느니라”(마 6:31-32)

도심을 벗어나 넓은 들판을 보며 “와~”하며 감탄했지만, 끝도 없는 들판을 5분 이상 계속 볼 사람은 없을 것입니다. 금방 익숙해지고, 익숙해진 나머지 지루하기까지 했습니다. 밋밋한 색깔의 벌판을 수 시간 달리다보니 졸음에 하품까지 나올 즈음에 빨간 지붕의 건물이 번쩍 눈에 들어 왔습니다. 사막에서 냉수 한 그릇을 발견한 듯 빨간 지붕 건물이 궁금해졌습니다. 점점 다가가며 그 빨간 지붕 건물은 집도 아니고, 조그마한 창고 같은 건물임을 알게 되었습니다. 그렇지만, 거의 모노톤의 들판을 수 시간 달리다 나타난 빨간 지붕은 퉁명스러운 얼굴에 미소를 띠게 하는 호의 같았습니다. 사람 하나 보이지 않았지만, 허허벌판에 한 점 들어온 빨간 지붕은 이 들판에 주인이 있다는 표시이며, 그 주인이 지루한 길을 한없이 달리는 졸음 운전자들에게 따뜻한 친절을 베푸는 표시였습니다.

교회 앞에 자전거 도로를 막고 하수도 공사를 몇 달째 하고 있습니다. 자전거를 타는 많은 사람이 교회가 옆에 있는 줄도 모르고 지나갔을 것입니다. 그러다가 공사로 인해 돌아가면서 교회 주차장을 통과하여 지나가게 되었습니다. 자연 속에 파묻혀 다소곳이 앉아 있는 우리 교회 건물이 달리는 속도 때문에 눈에 들어오지는 않았겠지만, 이제는 ‘교회’ 주차장을 통과하게 된 것입니다. 문득 우리 교회가 지루한 허허벌판 같은 세상에 빨간 지붕 역할을 하면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 별생각 없던 사람들이 “여기에 교회가 있네”라면서 빨간 지붕을 발견한 사람들처럼 신선함과 친절을 경험했으면 좋겠습니다. 앞으로 공사가 끝나면 보행하는 사람들이나 자전거 타는 사람들이 잠시라도 쉬고 가는 빨간 지붕의 쉼터 공간이 마련되면 어떨까 생각도 해봅니다. 혹시 지나는 사람이 “왜 이런거 하냐?”라고 묻는다면, “거저 받은 하나님의 사랑을 실천하는 것뿐입니다.” 폼나게 답해 보고 싶습니다.

Red Roof

America’s land is great and wide. Looking at endless stretches of horizon and vast land while driving, I think it’s even enough to bring over all of population from Korea. After the vastness of land, you see black cows, black angus, dotted here and there, grazing peacefully. A thought of satisfaction crosses my mind. If I was that cow, this endless field is my dining table and fresh green grass is my dinner. I think I would automatically confess “I shall not want”. Nothing is lacking, why would I fight with the other cows for food? Why would I worry about what I should eat today or tomorrow? I am reminded of Jesus’ sermon on the mount. “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”(Matt 6:31-32)

Looking at the wide field of countryside, we may respond with “Wow~”, but no one would stand looking at this for more than 5 minutes. We get used to it quickly and then become bored even. Driving several hours through plain fields, just about the time becoming drowsy and yawning, a red roof building suddenly comes into my view. I became curious about this red roof building as if I had discovered fresh water in the middle of desert. As we got closer, we realized this red roof building was not a house but a storage building. After driving through monotonous field for hours, this red roof was like a smile on a blunt face. In this vast field, with no one in view, this red roof provided as a sign that the land has owner. It was a warm welcome to sleepy drivers driving on this boring road.

In front of our church, there is a sewage construction going for months, blocking a bike trail. Many bikers ride through this trail, unaware that a church exists. With the construction, a detour was made through our parking lot. While their riding, they may not have been aware of a church building hidden in natural surroundings. Now they are passing through our ‘church’ parking lot. I thought about how nice it would be if our church can be like the red roof building in the world that is boring and empty. They may have, without much thought discovered “there’s a church here”, like a red roof building. I would like them to experience freshness and kindness from the discovery. After construction, I am thinking about putting a place of rest, a red roof rest area for bikers and hikers. If someone on trail asks “Why do you do this?”, I would answer with pride “We are only responding to God’s love that we have received freely.”
