매년 8월이 되면, 베델의 풀타임 목회진은 다음 해 사역을 가늠하는 정책 회의를 갖습니다. 내년 목표도 정하고, 주요한 변화에 발 빠르게 움직이며 여러 사역들을 검토하며 대책을 마련하는 모임입니다. 이번 모임은 특별히 팬데믹 이후의 사역들을 준비하면서 가장 불투명한 시기에 하나님이 허락하신 변화에 창의적이며, 능동적으로 대처하기 위한 모임으로 재작년에 이어 시애틀에서 가졌습니다. 대부분의 목회자가 팬데믹 기간 로컬에 갇혀 지내다시피 하다가 거의 2년 만에 처음으로 타는 비행기 여행은 체크인 과정도 어색할 정도로 긴장감과 설렘으로 가득 찼습니다.

특별히 감사했던 것은 이 모임을 위한 많은 성도님의 따뜻한 배려,격려와 넘치는 사랑이었습니다. 이 지면을 통해 특별히 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 회의 중, 시애틀 인근 산들을 찾아 베델 목회진이 팬데믹 기간에 늘 하던 하이킹을 했습니다. 레이니어산(Mt. Rainier)과 허리케인 릿지힐(Hurricane Ridge Hill)을 함께 걸으며, 하나님 지으신 아름다운 자연에 절로 찬양이 나왔습니다. 또한, 사슴, 다람쥐, 비버, 까마귀 등 동물들이 사람을 무서워하지 않고 친근하게 다가오는 것이 신기했습니다. 특별히 산 정상에서 자기 세상인 양 하늘을 나는 까마귀가 인상적이었습니다. 산 위에서 부는 바람은 모자를 움켜쥐고 걸어야 할 정도로 센 바람이었는데, 한 까마귀가 퍼덕거리는 날갯짓보다는 유유히 날개만 펴고 맞바람에 날다가 떨어지고, 또 공중에 올라 날개를 있는 힘껏 펴고 맞바람에 비상하다가, 다시 곤두박질하기를 반복하는 것이었습니다. 이를 재밌게 지켜보던 우리 중 한 분이 이런 재밌는 말을 했습니다. “여기 까마귀들은 자기들이 매인 줄 알아!” 이 말에 우리 모두 한바탕 웃었는데, 매 흉내 내는 까마귀가 정확한 크리스천의 정체성 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

죄로 말미암아 죽을 수밖에 없었던 우리는 까마귀 같은 자들이었습니다. 그런 우리가 다시 하나님의 형상을 회복하여, 저 높은 창공을 폼나게 나는 매처럼 구원받아 하나님의 걸작품으로 다시 태어났습니다. 아직 옛습관들이 남아 있어 자주 곤두박질치지만, 그래도 여전히 하나님은 우리를 하늘 자녀 삼으시고 계속 매처럼 날개를 펴고 비상하라고 격려하십니다. 오늘도 거센 고난과 유혹의 바람이 불어대지만, 우리는 산꼭대기에서 날개를 펴고 매 흉내를 내던 까마귀처럼 자주 곤두박질쳐도 다시 용기 있게 맞바람에도 날개를 펴야 합니다. 자동차 다니는 아스팔트 위에서 총총 뛰어다니며 죽은 다람쥐나 먹는 까마귀가 아니라, 죄악과 타협하지 않는 예수 믿는자의 자존심으로 푸른 하늘을 믿음의 날개를 펴고 유유히 비상하기를 다짐합니다.

Raven that Imitates Hawk

Our Bethel full-time pastors meet offsite every year in August to plan for the following year. It’s a meeting to decide on our next year’s motto, examine every ministry, assess major changes and make plans. Like the year before, this year’s meeting was held in Seattle. In this uncertain time, the meeting was to prepare and plan for creative and active ministries for post-pandemic phase. Most of our pastors stayed locally during pandemic. They were nervous and excited to get on an airplane for the first time in almost 2 years. Even the checking in process felt strange.

I am especially thankful to many church members for their thoughtful encouragement for this meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to convey a special thanks. During our stay, as we have done through pandemic, we took time to hike some of the mountains near Seattle. Being in the creation of God’s beautiful nature, praises came out naturally as we hiked Mt. Rainier and Hurricane Ridge Hill. It was amazing how deers, squirrels, beavers, and ravens approached us without fear. We were impressed by ravens flying the sky as if it’s their world at the top of the mountain. Wind was so strong on the mountains that we had to hold our hats as we walked. Ravens spread their wings and glided through the sky without moving their wings until a gust of wind would make them fall. Then they would spread their wings again to soar with all their might through the wind only to fall again, and kept repeating. As we were watching this in amusement, someone said, “ravens here think they are hawks!” We all had a good laugh. Then I thought that these ravens imitating hawks are exactly like Christian identity.

We were like ravens, who had no choice but to die for our sins. But we were restored in the image of God, like soaring hawk, we have been saved as His masterpiece. We still have old habits that cause us to fall. Yet God still makes us His heavenly children and continues to encourage us to spread our wings and soar like hawks. There are great hardships and temptations today like gusty winds. Even though we spread our wings at the top of the mountain and often fall like the ravens, we again muster the courage to spread our wings in the face of gusty wind. Unlike the ravens that hop on asphalt roads eating carcasses of squirrels, uncompromising to sin, we must have pride in our faith in Jesus and promise to spread our wings of faith to soar through the blue sky.
