얼마 전, 텍사스 우벨디(Uvalde, TX)에 있는 한 초등학교(Robb Elementary School)에서 일어난 총기 난사 사건으로 학생 19명과 교사 2명이 희생당하는 끔찍한 일이 있었습니다. 온 나라가 이 일을 슬퍼하며, 총기 사고에 대한 궁극적인 문제 해결을 위한 의견들로 정치권이 다시 뜨거워지고 있는 이때, 뜨겁다 못해 더 열 받치는 뉴스 하나가 터져 나왔습니다. 총기 난사가 있었던 학교에 경찰이 19명이나 출동해 있었음에도 더 많은 지원을 기다린다는 목적으로 학교 안으로 들어가 아이들을 구출하는 일을 한 시간가량 지체했다는 뉴스였습니다. 자신들이 위험하니 더 많은 지원이 올때까지 기다리라는 경찰국장의 명령이 있었다고 합니다. 저는 이 뉴스를 보면서 절로 소리를 지르고 말았습니다. 분노가 치밀어 올라 한동안 진정이 되질 않았습니다. 민간인이 사건 현장에 뛰어 들어가려 했다면 무모하게 희생될 수 있으니 말릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 경찰은 바로 이런 때를 위하여 훈련받은 자들입니다. 아무리 위험해도 이를 감수하고 아이들을 구하기 위해 들어갔어야 했습니다. 기다리는 절박한 한 시간 사이에 수도 없이 911 구원 요청 전화가 교실에 갇혀 있던 아이들로부터 걸려 왔었지만 경찰은 더 많은 경찰 요원들이 오기를 밖에서 그냥 기다리고 있었던 것입니다. 결국 가만히 있는 경찰들을 보다 못해 국경수비대가 경찰국장의 명령을 무시하고 교실로 잠입해 용의자를 사살함으로 사건이 일단락 되었다는 소식이었습니다. 제가 뉴스를 보며 흥분해 보긴 정말 오랜 만인 것 같습니다. “이것은 경찰의 직무 유기다”라고 뉴스를 보며 저는 분통이 터져 외쳤습니다. 처음에는 “어떻게 이런 일이…” 하고 놀라서 총기난사범에게 분노했지만, 이 뉴스를 듣고 나서는 용의자보다 경찰에 더 화가 났습니다. 사명을 잊어버린 경찰이었기 때문입니다. 자기들의 본분이 무엇인지 망각했기 때문입니다.

전쟁 중에 자기 죽을까 봐 총을 내려놓고 머리를 처박고 있는 군인이 있다면 어떻게 될까요? 아마 군사재판에 소환될 것입니다. 불침번을 서는 병사가 졸다가 적의 습격을 알리지 못해 큰 인명피해를 보았다면 어떻게 될까요? 모르긴 몰라도 전시 중이라면 사형감일 것입니다. 이처럼 사명감을 잃어버린 군인이나 경찰은 단순히 태만을 넘어 엄청난 피해를 줍니다. 그 피해가 생명처럼 한번 잃어버리면 회복할 수 없는 것이라면 그 무엇으로 책임을 질 수 있을까요? 우벨디 총격 사건으로 자녀들이 희생된 부모님들의 하염없는 눈물을 보면서 현장에 도착하여 바로 진입하지 않았던 경찰들이 야속하기만 합니다. 이 기회를 하나님의 부르심을 받은 자들은 사명을 고취하는 기회로 삼읍시다. ‘너희는 이 세상의 빛이라'(마 5:14)라고 말씀하시며 성도로서의 사명을 다시 한번 일깨우시는 주님의 메시지 앞에 오늘도 가슴 떨며 우리의 등불을 말 아래가 아닌, 등경 위에 두는 순종이 있기를 기도합니다.

Not too long ago, 19 students and 2 teachers from an elementary school (Robb Elementary School) were killed in a gun incident in Uvalde, TX. The entire nation was saddened by the incident. Many politicians were in heated arguments with different opinions on how to resolve the gun issue. In the midst of this, a news broke out that was not just heated but explosive. The news was that there were 19 police officers summoned to the school site at the time. However, they refrained from rescuing the students for about an hour waiting for more help to come. There was a direction from the police chief, and ultimately the police officers at the scene, in fear for their lives, decited to wait for more support to arrive. Upon hearing this news, I screamed at them. With rising anger inside, it took some time for me to settled down. If an ordinary citizen wanted to jump in to help, that person would have been stopped from a potential futile sacrifice. However, police officers are trained for such event. No matter how dangerous the situation, they should have gone in to rescue the children. The news said that during this one hour, there were numerous 911 calls coming from students in the classroom. But the policemen stood outside waiting for more help to arrive. That is not until the border patrol team stepped in, ignoring the police chief’s direction and waiting policemen, to bring the incident to an end. They entered the classroom and killed the perpetrator. It’s been a while since I had been this excited about a news story. “That is being irresponsible policemen” I shouted with great disappointment as I watched the news. “How could this happen…” I was in shock, initially angry at the criminal. But after listening to this news, I was angrier at the policemen than the perpetrator. These policemen forgot their mission. They totally forgot their responsibilities.

What would happen in a war if a soldier puts down his gun and hides his head in fear of losing his life? He will probably be prosecuted in a military court. What if there were casualties because a guarding soldier fell asleep and was unable to notify infiltration of enemy? More than likely, during a war, he may even be executed. Whether you are a soldier or a policeman, you can bring much harm if you forget what you are responsible for. What if the harm is life? If you lose it, it would never be restored. How can you be responsible for that? As I watched the parents in tears for their lost children, I became upset at the policemen who did not intervene at the scene. Those that have been called by God, let’s make this event a reminder to refresh our mission. As we stand before God’s message, which reminds us of our mission, ‘You are the light of the world'(Matt 5:14), may we obey with our hearts to set our lights on a stand and not hide it under a basket.
