영국 프로 축구단 토튼햄에서 활약하는 손흥민 선수가 영국 프리미어 리그에서 한 시즌 최다 득점왕이 되어, 황금 부츠 상을 받았다는 낭보가 날아왔습니다. 한국 사람으로, 아니 아시아인으로는 처음입니다. 너무나 자랑스럽고, 멋집니다. 어렸을 때부터 꿈꾸어 왔던 순간이 이루어진 것을 그는 믿지 못하겠다고 술회했습니다. 그의 영웅이었던 크리스티아누 호날두(Cristiano Ronaldo) 선수가 여전히 현역으로 뛰고 있는 같은 리그에서 그를 제치고 최다 득점왕의 자리에 오르는 업적을 세운 것입니다. 무명의 축구선수였던 손흥민 선수의 아버지 역시, 불철주야 아들을 뒷바라지하며 혹독하게 훈련해 오늘의 영광을 누리게 되는 최고의 수훈자로 대서특필 되었습니다. 특별히 그 아버지가 손 선수에게 귀에 딱지가 앉도록 교훈한 내용이 마음에 닿습니다. “축구선수가 되는 것보다 겸손이 먼저이다.” 경기가 끝난 후 상대방 선수들과 친절히 인사하는 모습, 경기장에서 쫓겨나는 아이에게 달려가 자기의 옷(저지 Jersey)을 벗어주는 모습, 그리고 상대팀의 코치들도 경기 후 손 선수를 껴안아 주는 모습들이 방영되는 것을 보며 아버지의 교훈이 아들 손흥민 선수에게 그대로 녹아내렸다는 생각이 듭니다. 그것이 지금 손세이션이라는 말을 할 정도로 다들 손흥민 선수 이야기를 하게 된 것 같습니다.

손세이션 말을 들으니, 약 10년 전 NBA 농구선수 생각이 납니다. 뉴욕 닉스 제레미 린 선수가, 일약 무명의 선수에서 팀을 살려내는 슈퍼 스타로 혜성과 같이 나타난 사건입니다. 린 선수는 하버드 대학의 농구선수였습니다. 프로 구단에서 별 관심이 없었던 선수여서, 이 팀 저 팀을 떠돌다 마이너 리그까지 떨어졌다가, 뉴욕 닉스 선수들 중 부상자가 많아서 벤치에 앉았던 대기조 선수였습니다. 뛸 선수가 없어서 투입된 린 선수는 그때부터 경기마다 20점, 30점씩 올리고, 특별히 경기 종료 직전 3점 슛을 성공시켜 팀의 부활을 이끌면서 ‘린세너티 Linsanity’라는 말을 만들어 내게 된 것입니다. 흑인과 백인의 전유물인 프로농구 필드에서, 하버드 대학을 나온 타이완- 미국인으로서, 그것도 농구의 메카라 할 수 있는 뉴욕 매디슨 구장에서 온 세계를 열광의 도가니로 몰아넣는 스타가 된 것입니다.

미디어 인터뷰에서 린 선수는 팬들의 열광에 감사하지만, 그것이 경기할 때 내 머릿속을 지배하지 않도록 하는 것이 중요하다고 말합니다. 뉴스 앵커가 “어떻게 팬들의 열광에 흔들리지 않도록 할 것입니까?”라고 관심 있게 물었습니다. 그때 린 선수의 대답은 우리가 모두 기억해야 할 말입니다. “… 들뜨지 않도록 노력할 것입니다… 가장 중요한 것은 매일 성경을 읽으며, 나는 남들과 다르지 않은 죄인인 것을 상기하는 것입니다. 내가 운동을 잘한다고, 나의 죄성이 없어지는 것이 아니기 때문입니다.”

Sonsational vs. Linsanity

I heard a happy welcome news that soccer player Son Heung-Min, who plays for England’s pro-soccer team Tottenham, became the season’s highest scorer, and received England’s Premier League Golden Boots award. This is the first record of not just as a Korean but as an Asian to receive this award. This is wonderful, and we are all very proud. He dreamt of this since a child. He said he couldn’t believe that this moment is finally here. In a league where his hero Cristiano Ronaldo plays, Son was able to surpass him to reach the highest scorer position. Although unknown, his father was also a pro-soccer player. He supported and trained his son, making him the greatest player of our time. What his father drilled into him especially touched my heart, “Before you become a soccer player, your humbleness is priority.” On a broadcast, I watched him humbly greet opposing team’s players after a game. He would run after a kid who’s being chased out of the field and gives him the jersey off his back. Opposing team’s coaches come out to embrace Son after the game. I could see how his father’s teaching influenced him. This is what made everyone talk about Son, even created a new word Sonsational.

With the word Sonsational, I am reminded of an NBA basketball player about 10 years ago. Jeremy Lin, who played for NY Knicks. He was an unknown player until he rose to stardom by raising up his team. Lin was a basketball player from Harvard University. He was not a player that pro clubs were interested in. He played for many teams and even was dropped to minor leagues. He was on a bench as a substitute player for NY Knicks. There were many injured players at the time. Replacing an injured player, he was sent in to play. After that game, each time he played, he scored 20, 30 points. At the end of a final game, he successfully scored 3 points, reviving the team. The word ‘Linsanity’ spread. In this pro-basketball league, where majority of players are black and white, a Harvard graduate and Taiwanese-American became a star sensationalizing the world from the NY Madison Square Garden.

In his interview, Lin thanked his fan’s enthusiastic support, but he also said that he doesn’t want this to get to his head. A news reporter asked curiously, “What will keep you from (this Linsanity) getting to your head?” What Lin answered next is something we should all remember. He said, “I just tried to stay grounded….” “Most importantly, I read my Bible and remind myself at the end of the day, I am a sinner just like anybody else. Nothing I do in the court will change that.”
