매년 통계청에서 OECD(경제협력개발기구) 국가 대상으로 ‘국민 삶의 질’을 발표합니다. 2023년도 대한 통계를 지난 22일 발표했는데, OECD 38개국 중 대한민국이 35위를 하면서 하위권에 머물러 있음을 보았습니다. 우리나라보다 만족도가 떨어지는 나라는 그리스, 콜롬비아 그리고 튀르키예였습니다. 혹 우리가 궁금해할 나라, 미국과 일본은 각각 15위, 32위를 했습니다. 우리나라보다 못한 튀르키예나 그리스는 모두 관광 수입이 절대적인 나라인 것이 이상했습니다. 세계 역사 속에 가장 풍부한 관광자원을 가지고 있어서 많은 나라 사람이 구경하러 오는 나라인데, 정작 그 나라 국민들은 삶의 질에 대한 만족도가 상대적으로 떨어져 있다는 것이 의아했습니다.

지난달, 튀르키예를 방문하면서 계시록에 나오는 일곱 교회를 4-5번째로 방문하는 기회를 가졌지만, 이번에도 느끼는 의구심은 왜 이런 소중한 자산을 더 발굴, 개발해서 관광객들에게 보여주려고 하지 않을까였습니다. 그냥 방치해 놓은 것 같은 돌무더기에도 관광객들이 찾아와주니 개발할 생각이 없는 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 예를 들면 한국이나 미국은 성막 모형이나, 노아의 방주도 만들어서 전시하는데, 정작 아라라트산이라고 믿어지는 튀르기예는 그냥 산 중앙에 방주 크기만 한 그 터전만 보여줄 뿐입니다. 그리스 역시 사도바울의 2차 및 3차 전도 여행 코스로 빌립보, 데살로니가, 베뢰아 및 고린도와 아테네 등이 즐비하고, 세계 7대 불가사의 중 하나인 파르테논 신전까지 세계 역사의 발생지라 해도 틀리지 않은 관광 자산이 있음에도, 그리스 국민의 삶의 만족도는 최하위에 머무는 안타까운 모습입니다.

그렇다면 우리 대한민국은 왜 하위에 머물고 있는 것일까요? 일제강점기를 지나고, 6.25 사변을 지내면서 세계에서 가장 못 살던 나라가, 5-60년 만에 세계경제대국 10위권으로 진입한 세계역사에 전무후무한 나라가 우리나라입니다. 전쟁의 잿더미에서 미국과 유엔의 도움을 받아 신생한 수혜자가 이제는 다른 나라를 도와주고, 무엇보다 인구 대비 선교사 파송 1위를 받은 우리나라가 왜 행복지수가 하위에 머물고 있는지 잘 모르겠습니다. 제가 미국 이민 올 때만 해도 파커 볼펜이 최고인 줄 알았는데, 지금은 우리 자녀들도 부모님의 나라를 자랑스럽게 여기고, K-drama, K-food에 이어 K-pop에 K-classic까지 예능에서도 최고를 달리는 나라가 되었고, 세계 어디를 가도 우리나라 자동차와 전자제품이 최고 인기 있는 품목이 되었습니다.

남들이 부러워할 만한 것을 가지고 있으면서도 삶의 만족도가 낮은 이유는 가진 것에 대한 감사한 마음과 누리지 못하고 있는 근시안적 삶의 태도 때문이라고 생각합니다. 우리 가진 것에 대한 감사, 가족과 자녀들, 그리고 은혜로운 평안의 교회에 대한 감사와 그것을 매일 같이 누리는 것이 삶의 만족도를 높이는 비결이라고 믿습니다.

Level of Satisfaction of Life

Every year OECD(Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) reports on [Quality of Life of Citizens] for countries. On 22nd this month, report was announced for 2023. Among 38 OECD countries, Korea ranked low at 35th place. Countries that fell below Korea in satisfaction level were Greece, Columbia, and Turkiye. Countries we may be curious about, U.S. and Japan were ranked 15th and 32nd respectively. It was strange that the countries that fell below Korea rely heavily on tourism revenues. These countries possess abundant historical artifacts in world history. There are many visitors come to see the sites. Yet, in comparison, their citizen’s satisfaction of quality of life fell strangely low.

I had an opportunity to visit seven churches listed in Revelation, my 4-5th visit, when I visited Turkiye last month. My curiosity again, as it was before, is that why they haven’t excavated and improved more for the tourists. Since tourists are coming to see even the piles of stones that are just left alone, perhaps, that hasn’t crossed their minds to improve. For example, in Korea or in U.S., they make models of Tabernacle and Noah’s Ark to display. But Turkiye, where Mt. Ararat is, only shows you the area in the middle of the mountain that indicates the size of an ark. In Greece, filled with places of Apostle Paul’s 2nd and 3rd journeys like Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Corinth and Athens, including Parthenon, one of the 7 wonders of the world, they possess tourism assets as the birth place of world history. It is sad to see that the satisfaction of quality of life for Greeks is at the lowest level.

Then why is Korea ranked so low? The country was once the poorest country in the world, having gone through Japanese occupation and Korean War(6.25). But 50-60 years later, it is 10th among World Economic Countries. The country is unprecedented in world history. From heap of ashes after war, barely survived with help from U.S. and U.N., Korea is now helping other countries. Above all, based on ratio of population, the country ranks 1st in sending missionaries. Then, I don’t understand why the satisfaction of quality of life for people of our country remains so low.
When I emigrated to U.S., having a Parker ballpen was the best. Now, our children are proud of their parent’s country as we are at forefront in arts with K-drama, K-food, K-pop, and K-classic. Wherever you go in the world, Korean cars and electronic appliances are the most popular merchandises.

Although we already have what others are envious of, the reason for the low standing in satisfaction of life, I think, is because we don’t have thankful hearts for what we have, and short-sighted attitude toward life. I believe having appreciation for what we have, like family and children, and thankfulness for blessings of peaceful church, and being able to enjoy them daily are the key to raising our satisfaction of life.
