1+1은 2이지만, 시너지가 나면 그 이상의 효과가 나타납니다. 한 공동체를 이루는 구성원들이 서로 협동하고 같은 마음으로 힘을 합치면 상상할 수 없는 상승효과가 나타나는 것입니다. 군인들의 사기가 전쟁 승리에 결정적이라고 합니다. 경기에 임하는 선수들 각자의 개인기도 중요하겠지만, 협력하여 하나 되는 것은 승리를 거두는 데 아주 중요한 요소가 됩니다.

지난주 한국이 아시안컵 축구대회 4강전에서 상대적으로 약체인 요르단에 0:2로 패하면서 감독 클린스만의 경질 문제가 표면에 등장했지만, 경기 전날, 손흥민 선수와 이강인 선수가 서로 몸싸움을 할 정도로 다투었고, 이로 인해 손흥민 선수는 손가락이 골절되는 부상까지 입었다는 뉴스가 터져 나왔습니다. 11명이 뛰는 축구 경기에서 서로 호흡을 맞추지 못하면 아무리 개인기가 뛰어나도 결국 패배의 원인이 될 수밖에 없다는 것을 또 한 번 확인하게 됩니다. 선배가 멱살을 잡고 후배는 주먹질하고, 서로 화해가 없는 가운데 우승을 향한 경기를 한다는 것은 혼자서 상대방 11명의 선수을 대항하여 축구하겠다는 말과 같습니다. 되지도 않을 일이며 무모한 일입니다. 정말 안타까운 뉴스가 아닐 수 없습니다. 싸우게 된 정확한 이유가 무엇인지 잘 모르지만, 둘 다 잘나가는 해외파 선수들이기에 어느 순간 교만함이 자리 잡은 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 그 전 두 경기를 어렵게 연장전까지 가면서 힘들게 승리를 얻었는데, 그 승리감에 도취한 나머지, 마치 우승은 우리 것인 양 사탄이 가장 잘 쓰는 [공동체 파괴 전략 #1], 교만의 유혹에 걸려든 것입니다.

어떤 면에서 교회는 우승을 앞두고 4강전을 치르고 있는 축구선수와 같습니다. 우승을 앞두고 있지만, 아직은 아닙니다. 지금까지 패전이 짙은 경기도 질듯 질듯 연장전까지 치르고, 때론 마지막 승부차기로 기적 같은 승리를 거머쥐며 4강에 올랐는데, 이때 사탄은 마치 우리가 우승한 양, 승리를 자축하며, 선수들의 공을 따지게 합니다. 그리고 그 공을 은근히 알아주기를 기대하는 교만의 향수를 뿌려댑니다. 이 향수를 맡으면 서로 잘난 척하기 시작하고, 그 꼴 못 봐주는 자들끼리 치고받기 시작하면서 교회는 순식간에 싸움판이 되어 버리게 됩니다. 그 결과 코 앞에 둔 영광의 대관식을 물 건너가게 하는 것이 사탄의 고도 전략입니다.

예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻으시며 드렸던 기도가 이것입니다. “아버지여, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서.” (요17:21) 세상을 향한 교회의 승리는 예수 그리스도의 주 되심을 선포하는 것입니다. “하나됨으로…”

Synergy Effect

Even though 1+1 is 2, the result can be greater when there is synergy effect. When members of a community come together and put their strengths with one heart, unimaginable results can happen. It is said that the morale of soldiers is crucial to winning a war. Even for athletes, competing as individuals is important, but working together as a team is a critical factor in achieving victory.

During Asian Soccer Championship semi-final games last week, Korea lost 0:2 to Jordan, a relatively weak team. Since then, the topic of Coach Klinsmann’s resignation rose to surface. However, on the day before the game, team members Hongmin Sohn and Kangin Lee argued leading to physically altercation. The news came out that this physical altercation between the two caused a fracture on Hongmin Sohn’s finger. This confirms, once again, that no matter how excellent an individual player is, it is a losing game unless all 11 team members are synced with one another. Older prayer grabs the younger player by his throat, and younger player punches the older player. When they played the game without reconciliation, it is like one player playing the game against 11 players. It was just impossible and reckless. It was frustrating to hear this news. We don’t really know the reason for their fight. Both athletes are doing very well playing for overseas teams. Perhaps, unknowingly, their prides got in the way. They barely won two previous games going to overtime. In their sense of victory, perhaps, pride got in their ways of thinking that the victory is theirs, Satan’s most used temptation method of [Community destruction strategy #1].

In a way, church is like soccer players playing in semi- finals looking forward to victory. Victory may be ahead, but not yet. Up until that point, there’s been almost losing games, but extending to overtime for a miraculous win to move up to semi- finals. This is when Satan tempts us, as if we already won, and judge the player’s merits. Then Satan spreads the fragrance of pride, making us secretly expect recognition for the merit. Once exposed to this fragrance, pride takes over. Those who can’t stand to watch this start fighting. Before you know it, church becomes a fighting ground. Satan’s advance strategy is to make us skip the glorious coronation that is just around the corner.

Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and prayed, “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”(Jo 17:21) Victory of church is to proclaim towards the world that Jesus Christ is Lord. “That they may all be one…”
