2024년 새해가 밝았습니다. 가장 두툼한 달력 겉장을 떼고 1월의 새 아침이 밝으면 묵었던 한해를 뒤로 하고, 다시 출발하는 각오가 섭니다. 마라톤을 뛰기 위해 출발선에 몸을 앞으로 내밀며 서 있는 선수들처럼, 목표를 향한 열정은 뜨겁습니다. 다시 성탄절까지 달려가려면 꽤 먼 것 같이 느껴지는 새해이지만 아이들은 세뱃돈을 챙기는 설렘으로 코를 박고 함박웃음과 함께 절하기 바쁩니다. 이처럼 새해는 말 그대로 ‘새것’에 대한 기대로 충만합니다.

다시 돌아온 새해이지만, 새해를 향한 우리의 기대는 천차만별일 것입니다. 우선 새해를 맞이하며 결심하는 것은 성경적이라 할 수 있습니다. 예수님을 나의 주님으로 믿고 신앙의 문턱을 넘은 이상, “이전 것은 지나갔으니, 보라 새것이 되었도다” 선언했기에 새해에 새결심을 하는 것은 지극히 당연합니다. 그러나 결심의 내용은 개인의 역량입니다. 어떤 종류의 새해 결심을 하는지 알아보면, 그 사람의 수준을 알 수 있다는 말이 있습니다. 결국 새해 결심을 하되 그 결심의 내용물을 신앙 안에서 최대한 올리려는 노력이 필요합니다.

그렇기 때문에, 우리는 최선을 다해 결심할 수 있는 현장으로 나와야 합니다. 신앙을 데우려면 뜨거운 현장에 오셔야 합니다. 몸이 추우면 불 앞에 서서 불을 쬐야 하듯, 기도하는 현장에서 영적 열기로 달궈져야 합니다. 다른 방법이 없습니다. 신앙에는 독불장군은 없습니다. 맘에 안 든다고, 나 홀로 선언하는 순간, 여지없이 나락으로 떨어집니다. 신앙이 없는 사람도 새해에 밝아 오는 일출을 보며 소원을 빌기 위해, 아무리 멀어도 동이 트는 바닷가는 인산인해를 이룹니다. 기독교인이 아니더라도 자기 소신을 따라 절을 찾기도 하고 모스크를 찾기도 할 것입니다. 하물며, 새로운 피조물로 지음 받은 성도들이 새것에 대한 기대와 결심을 촉구하는 현장으로 나와야 하지 않겠습니까? 온라인 시대라고 하지만, 현장 속에 주시는 하나님의 은혜는 너무도 큽니다.

새해를 시작하며, 말씀이 선포되어지고 하나님의 뜻이 드러나는 현장, 엘리야 특별새벽기도회(엘새)에 성도들이 어린자녀들까지 깨워 최선을 다해 나오는 모습은 열심을 넘어서 감동입니다. 못 올 이유가 만 가지라도 변명하지 않고, 피곤해도 더 일찍 일어나고, 졸음이 와도 허벅지를 꼬집으며 두 눈을 부릅뜨고, 내가 은혜 못 받으면 내가 죽는다는 각오로 새벽을 깨우는 베델은 그 자체로 감동이었습니다. 그 안에 담겨진 결심의 내용들은 베델이 베델되는 수준입니다. ‘한 사람이 한 영혼을 하나님께 아멘!’ 외치면 함께 기도하는 소원과 결심이 주 안에서 풍성한 열매로 성큼 다가오는 새해가 되기를 축복합니다.

New Year’s Resolution

It’s a bright new day of 2024. When a new day dawns in January, we rip off the last calendar page of the past year and determined to start anew. Like Marathon runners pressing forward ready to run at a starting line, we are all burning with passion for the goal. To run until this coming Christmas, it seems distance away. In anticipation of receiving saebae money, children with big smiles bow to their elders and bury their noses. With the New Year, we are filled with anticipation of ‘new things’.

New Year has returned. But our expectations of new year vary wildly. First of all, it’s biblical to make a New Year’s resolution. Once we crossed the threshold to faith in our Lord Jesus, we declare “old has passed; behold, the new has come”. Therefore, making a New Year’s resolution is quite natural. However, the content of resolution is up to individual. Another words, you can tell a person’s level of faith by the kind of resolutions they make. We should all make New Year’s resolutions, but effort must be made, by faith, to elevate the content.

Therefore, we must do our best to come out in-person to where we can make decisions. If you want to increase temperature of your faith, you must come out to where spirit is hot. Like standing in front of a fire will warm up your body, your spiritual heat will come from the place of prayer. There is no other way. In faith, there is no maverick. Just because it’s not to your liking, at the moment you declare you will go alone, you will fall into abyss. Even those non-believers head out in mass to beach at sunrise to make New Year’s wish. Others will probably seek out to Buddhist temples or Mosques. Shouldn’t Christians, who are new creations, come out to where there is urging of anticipation and decision for something new? Although we’re living in on-line era, God’s grace of in-person worship is just too great.

With starting of the new year, the passions of those who came out to Elijah Early Morning Prayer worship, with kids in tow, where the Word is proclaimed and God’s will is revealed, moved me beyond enthusiasm. There may be many reasons why we couldn’t come. But, we wake up early even though we’re tired. We try to stay awake by pinching our thighs and with the conviction, I will die if not grace. Attitude of Bethel members that awaken the dawn was truly moving. The content of resolution shows the level at which Bethel becomes Bethel. Shouting ‘Each One, Reach One
Amen!’ and praying together with hope and determination, may it bring blessings of much fruit in the New Year.
