어바인에 새로운 이상 기후가 포착되었습니다. 엘니뇨는 아니고, ‘엘사’라고 합니다. 지난주 엘리야 특별새벽기도회(엘새)가 은혜 가운데 성료하고, ‘엘리사’ 새벽기도회(엘사)가 시작되었습니다. 무슨 말이냐구요?!?! 엘리야 기도회 이후, 예삶 청년들이 매일 새벽기도에 한 주간 더 나와 기도의 자리를 지키는 엘리사 기도회를 했기 때문입니다. “기도하는 청년이 교회의 미래입니다”를 외치며 강문구 목사님이 말씀을 시작하는데, 큰 울림으로 다가왔습니다. 천여 명씩 나오던 엘새에 비하면 좀 썰렁하기는 했지만, 일당 천의 청년들이 무릎을 꿇는 엘사는 그 이상 가슴이 뜨거웠습니다. 새벽기도의 현장을 지키는 베델의 젊은이들이 한편 듬직하고 또 한편 고마웠습니다.

어쩌면 엘새 이후 엘사가 진검승부일지도 모르겠습니다. 한해 새벽을 깨우며 기도하리라는 결단이 칼날 같이 선 젊은이들이 전능하신 하나님 앞에 나왔기 때문입니다. Mighty God! 을 외치며 기도하는 젊은이들의 기도가 얼마나 듬직한지 “전능하신 하나님! 저들의 기도로 우리 교회 방패 삼아 악한 마귀 일절 틈타지 못하게 하시며, 기도의 전능함이 베델의 가정과 사역의 현장에 나타나는 한해 되게 하옵소서” 저절로 담임목사의 입술에서 터져 나옵니다.

기도하며 환상을 봅니다. ‘What if, what if… 만약에’ 기도하는데 자꾸 입 속에서 맴돕니다. 만약에 내년에는 1년 365일 동안 엘새를 한다면 어떻게 될까? 이런 생각이 자꾸 돌아갑니다. 매일 목장별 찬양과 아침 국밥을 먹으며, 매일 천여 명의 베델인이 일 년 내내 모여 기도하면 어떤 일이 벌어질까? 상상만 해도 가슴이 뛰고, 만약 그런 일이 벌어진다면 우리가 뒤집어질 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 다들 지쳐서 나가떨어지든지, 아니면, 두 손 들고 “천부여 의지 없어서” 찬양과 함께 부흥을 체험하든지, 둘 중의 하나일 것 같습니다. 올해 베델의 주제곡을 작사하면서 “…기도의 일상이 내 평생의 사명되게 하소서…”고백했는데, 하나님이 ‘너 정말, 그럴 맘은 있는 거냐?’ 물으시는 것 같았습니다.

사랑하는 베델 가족 여러분! 저는 이렇게 생각하고 있습니다. 만약 올 해 우리 베델 가족이 기도하지 않으면, 내년에는 “마이티 갓, 마이티 프레어 2” 해서 일 년 내내 엘새를 할까 생각 중입니다. 기도하며 받는 은혜가 너무 커서, 우리 성도들이 제일 먼저 큰 은혜를 받았으면 하는 담임목사의 소원이 있어서 그렇게 바래봅니다. 어떻게 생각하시나요? 달아나실래요, 달려오실래요? 말리실래요, 같이 뛰어드실래요?

Unusual Weather El-Sa has Arrived

Unusual weather has arrived in Irvine. It’s not El Nino. It’s called [ElSa]. After successfully completing Elijah Early Morning Prayer Worships(El-Sae) last week, ‘Elisha’ Early Morning Prayer(El-Sa) began. What am I talking about?!?! After Elijah Prayers, Yeasalm young people came out every morning for another week for Elisha Prayers. Pastor Moongu Kang proclaimed “Young people in prayers are the future of church” and began his message. It touched me as a great cry. Compared to over 1000 people showing up for El-Sae, it was a much thinner crowd. But my heart became hot with passion as the young people got on their knees to pray at El-Sa. I felt proud and grateful as the young people kept on the early morning prayers.

After El-Sae, perhaps El-Sa is the real sword for battle. It is because young people came before our almighty God with determination like sharp knife to pray to awaken the new year. I was very proud of these young people as they prayed shouting Mighty God! Prayer bursts out of my mouth automatically. “Almighty God! Use their prayers as the shield for our church so that devil cannot take advantage of us. May the mightiness of prayers be present this year in Bethel families and ministries.”

We see visions while praying. “What if, what if… perhaps” keeps circling in my mouth while praying. What will happen if, next year, we do El-Sae for a whole year, 365 days? This thought keeps circling in my head. Will there be special praises by pastoral communities and rice and soup every morning? If 1000 Bethel people prayed every day, what could happen? My heart races just thinking about it. If this happened, we would be turned upside down. Everybody will either fall away from exhaustion, or experience revival with praise “Father, I stretch my hands to Thee”. It will be one or the other. As I was writing lyrics for this year’s Bethel Theme song, I confessed “…may daily prayer be my lifelong mission…”. It felt like God is asking “Do you really have that heart?”

Dear Bethel family! This is what I propose. If our Bethel family doesn’t pray this year, next year we should do a year-long El-Sae, “Mighty God, Might Prayer 2”. This is how I see. Because God’s grace is so great when we pray, as a senior pastor, I wish our congregation to be the first to receive this amazing grace. What do you think? Will you run away or will you come running?
