제가 어렸을 적부터 설교 시간에 참 많이 들었던 말이 하나님의 섭리였습니다. 하나님이 세상 역사에 섭리하셔서 기독교 복음이 잘 전파되도록 도우셨다는 것이죠. 팍스 로마나(Pax Romana)로 불리는 200년의 세월 가운데 로마의 이름으로 여러 나라들이 통일되고 수많은 도로가 건설되고 통일된 언어 교육이 활발해지면서 기독교가 널리 전파될 수 있었다는 것입니다. 그 이전에는 알렉산더 대왕이 자기의 이름으로 어마어마한 제국을 일궈내고 자신의 제국의 언어를 그리스어로 지정했습니다. 그로 인해 구약 성경이 그리스어로 번역되었고, 신약 성경은 일반 대중들도 쉽게 읽을 수 있는 대중 그리스어로 쓰일 수 있었습니다. 또한 구텐베르크의 인쇄술의 발명은 루터의 종교개혁에 날개를 달아주었습니다. 루터가 외쳤던 말이 바로 모든 사람이 각자 사제의 도움 없이 말씀을 읽을 수 있어야 한다는 것이었거든요.

그런데 자끄 엘륄이란 프랑스 신학자는 이런 역사의 뒤에서 하나님이 섭리하셨다는 주장에 딴지를 겁니다. 그는 말합니다. “위에서 언급한 것들은 분명한 사실이다. 알렉산더 대왕의 정복 전쟁도, 팍스 로마나의 시절도, 인쇄술의 발명도 다 복음 전파에 도움이 되었다. 그러나 그 제국의 정신이, 기술문명이 기독교 복음을 망가뜨리고 오염시킨 것과 비교하면 그 도움은 너무나도 미미하여 아무것도 아닌 정도다.” 엘륄의 주장을 읽으며 유튜브와 온라인 예배가 떠올랐습니다. 팬데믹 기간 동안 현장에 나와서 예배드릴 수 없는 우리에게 온라인으로 드려지는 예배는 너무나 감사했고 소중했습니다. 그러나 온라인으로 드리는 예배가 우리에게 익숙해질수록 우리는 예배를, 말씀을, 찬양을 그저 콘텐츠로 소비하게 될 위험에 빠지게 됩니다. 너무나도 손쉽게 손가락 몇 번으로 예배를 ‘켜고’ ‘끌’ 수 있게 되므로, 그리고 마치 쇼핑하듯 내 마음에 더 잘 맞고 나를 감동시키는 말씀으로 건너가게 되므로 우리는 예배라는 콘텐츠를 손쉽게 소비할 수 있는 소비자가 되어버리는 것이죠. 기술의 발달로 인해 너무나도 쉽게 기독교 신앙을 콘텐츠 소비처럼 대하는 현상을 누군가는 기술-영지주의(techno-Gnosticism)라고 부르며 비판했습니다. 우리가 몸으로 수고해야 할 영역을 기술의 발달이 대신함으로 우리의 몸이 상실된 예배와 신앙생활을 그렇게 표현한 것입니다.

기독교 신앙의 핵심은 성육신입니다. 성자 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 몸으로 이 땅에 오셨던 것처럼 우리도 우리의 몸을 주님께 드려야 합니다. 헌신(獻身)이란 한자어도 드릴 헌(獻)에 몸 신(身)입니다. 우리의 몸을 드리는 것이 헌신입니다. 우리는 예배를 소비하는 자입니까? 예배에 헌신하는 자입니까? 하나님을 소비하는 자입니까? 하나님께 헌신하는 자입니까? 우리의 주일 예배 가운데, 일상의 삶 가운데 온몸과 마음을 주님께 드림으로 진정한 헌신자가 되길 소망합니다. 예배를 그냥 쉽게 소비하지 맙시다. 우리의 예배에 우리의 땀 냄새가 베어 있게 합시다.

Are You a Consumer or Devotee

Words I heard often in sermons when I was young was God’s providence. That is to say that, by God’s providence, Christianity has spread throughout world’s history. Christianity spread far and wide because of Pax Romana. During 200 years, in the name of Roman Empire, many nations were united, countless roads were constructed, and education with unified language thrived. Before that time, Alexander the Great built a mighty empire in his name. He designated Greek as official language. The Old Testament was translated into Greek. The New Testament was written in Greek that was easily read by general population. Invention of Guttenberg printing machine gave Luther’s Reformation wings to fly. Luther proclaimed that every person should be able to read the Word without help from priests.

However, French theologian Jacques Ellul disrupts the opinion that God’s providence is behind history. He said, “What has been said is true. Alexander the Great’s war of conquest, the era of Pax Romana, and invention of printing machine all helped to spread the gospel. However, the help is little to almost none when compared to destruction and contamination the spirit of Roman Empire and technology advancement caused Christianity.” I was reminded of YouTube and online worship as I was reading Ellul’s opinion. It was important for us to be able to worship online while we couldn’t worship in-person during pandemic. We were thankful. However, the more we become comfortable with online worship, there is the danger of worship, message, and praise just becoming contents to consumer. Our finger tips can easily “turn on” and “off” worship. We move cursor to the parts that move us or we want to hear, just like shopping. We become consumers of worship contents. Someone criticized this phenomenon of approaching Christian faith merely as consumer of contents. It is called Techno-Gnosticism. Our worship and faith that we must devote ourselves to have been replaced by technology. This is an expression of worship and life of faith without the presence of our body.

The core of Christian faith is incarnation. Just as God the Son came to earth for us in human body, we must give our body to God. Devote(hunshin) in Chinese character means (hun)to give and (shin)body. Devotion is to give one’s body. Are we consumers of worship? Or, are we devoted to worship? Are we consumers of God? Or, are we devoted to God? May we be genuinely devoted to God with our whole body and heart in our Lord’s Day worship as well as in our daily lives. Let us not just consume and waste worship. Smell of our sweats from hard work must seep through our worship.
