오늘 새벽, 써머타임이 해제되었습니다. 공교롭게도 올해의 써머타임이 시작되던 3월 13일 주일에도 제가 씨를 뿌리며 추수를 기대하는 내용의 칼럼을 썼습니다. 써머타임이 끝나 ‘가을에는 한 시간을 뒤로’ 하는 오늘, 참 절묘한 우연이라 생각을 하지 않을 수 없습니다. 어찌하여 제가 말씀 전하는 특권을 받게 된 두 번의 주일을 써머타임이 시작하고 해제되는 날이 되게 하셨을까요? 하나님이 모든 시간의 주관자이심을 알게 하시고, 하나님이 우리 모두를 정확하게 있을 자리에 두고 계심을 깨닫게 하십니다.

봄에 씨를 뿌리고 나서 가을에 열매가 맺히고 추수하는 데까지는 몇 주의 시간만 필요합니다. 하지만 우리에게 주어진 시간은 훨씬 깁니다. 씨를 뿌리고 열매가 맺히는 원리에 비추어 자기 삶을 되돌아보기를 원합니다. 다음과 같은 질문을 던지며 나는 올 한 해를 잘 살아왔는지, 그리고 한 해의 마무리를 어떻게 하면 좋을지 생각하고 검토해 봅시다. 올해를 시작하며 나는 어떤 씨앗들을 심었나요? 씨앗을 심으려고 하기는 했나요? 어떤 생각들로 한 해를 보냈나요? 나의 새해 목표는 무엇이었나요? 영원을 향한 의미 있는 목표들이었나요? 성경을 읽었나요? 기도는 하고 있나요? QT는 열심히 했나요? 다른 사람들에게 복음을 전했나요?

씨를 심는 것은 희망과 기대를 한다는 것을 의미합니다. 이제 감사 주일이 있는 11월을 맞으며 우리가 받은 복을 세어 보면서 우리 안에서 거두시는 열매는 무엇인지 생각해 보기를 원합니다. 그리고 후회되는 일보다는 감사함에 초점을 두어 올 추수 감사 주일에 나눌 수 있는 감사의 조건을 생각해 보면 좋을 것 같습니다.

오늘 저희에게 한 시간이 추가로 주어진 것처럼, 올해의 남은 날들도 하나님께서 추가로 허락하신 시간으로 생각합시다. 마찬가지로 우리의 남은 삶도 하나님께서 추가로 허락하신 시간으로 생각합시다. 하나님은 씨앗이 자라도록 물을 공급하듯이 우리에게 성령과 말씀과 사랑을 계속하여 공급해 주십니다. 마지막 열매를 거둘 때, 즉 우리를 저 천국으로 인도하실 때까지 신실하신 하나님을 신뢰하며 나아가기를 소원합니다. 주님은 가장 알맞을 때 영적인 추수를 할 수 있도록 우리를 인도하실 것입니다. 함께 믿음의 씨를 뿌리며 우리를 지키시고 인도하시는 주님을 믿으며 우리의 삶을 살아갈 수 있기를 소원합니다.

In God’s Timing

Daylight Savings Time ends today. Remarkably, on March 13, earlier this year when Daylight Savings Time began I wrote a column. It was about planting seeds and expecting a harvest. Today, as we end Daylight Savings and “Fall Back” one hour, I cannot help but to wonder how coincidental this is. How is it that these two times that I have been given the privilege to preach on the Lord’s Day fall on the two days that mark the beginning and end of Daylight Savings Time? God is making the point that He is in control of time. He has us all exactly where He wants us.

Usually, from springtime planting to harvesting the fruit takes only a few weeks, but given the time we have been given, and thinking about the law of sowing and reaping, these are some questions I think we should consider. These are questions that we must ask ourselves to evaluate how our year has been and how best to end it well. What kind of seeds did I plant earlier this year? Did I even think to plant any? What kind of thoughts did I have throughout the year? What were my goals? Were they worthy goals that have eternal meaning? Did I read the Bible? Did I pray? Did I do my QT? Did I share the Gospel with anyone?

Planting seeds is about having hope and expectation. And as we head into the month of Thanksgiving, let us count our blessings and evaluate what we have harvested. And rather than spend our time in regret, let us think about the things we are grateful for. In this month of November, the month of Thanksgiving let us think about the things we are most grateful for.

Just like we have one extra hour today, let us consider the rest of the year God has given us. Let us consider the rest of our lives that God has given us. Let us trust that God will continue to water us with His Spirit, His Word and His Love until the final harvest; when He comes to gather us home. Let us be faithful to trust that God has granted a harvest. And He will bring further spiritual harvests at just the right time. And meanwhile, let us continue to plant seeds of faith to rely on God Who cares for us and guides us through these times.
