이번 목회자 전략회의는 후반기 사역을 위해서 조금 일찍 모였습니다. 연말에는 새로 오실 후임 목사님이 인도하시는 것이 맞기에 후반부 사역을 위해서 함께 뭉쳤습니다. 이번 모임을 위해 택한 장소는 그랜드캐년이었습니다. 대부분의 목사님들이 가보지 못한 곳이 기도 하지만, 저는 개인적으로 크신 하나님 앞에 겸손히 서고 싶은 마음이 컸습니다. 그리고, 저의 예상대로 우리 모두는 정말 겸손해 졌습니다. 바라보는 경관은 감탄사를 저절로 자아냈습니다. 다른 무엇과 비교할 수 없는 최고였습니다. 우리 중 아프리카 선교사 출신인 J목사님도 광활한 것은 아프리카에서 다 보았다 생각했는데, 그랜드캐년 앞에서 입을 다물어야 했다 고백했습니다. B목사님은 시종 이번 휴가는 RV를 빌려 그랜드캐년을 가족과 다시 오겠다 희망사항을 되뇌었습니다.

모뉴멘트 밸리는 아무리 생각해도 하나님의 최고의 걸작품 같습니다. 어떻게 저런 것을 광야 가운데 붉게 세워 놓으셨는지 경이로움 그 자체였습니다. 조각가라도 저렇게 깎아내지 못했을 것입니다. 그런데, 그 아름다운 작품은 그 재료가 사암이라 이는 풍파와 비바람에 씻기고 깎이고 잘렸기 때문이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 강철 같은 돌이었다면, 세월이 지나도 그대로 있었겠지만, 재질이 근본 약해서 비바람이 들이치면 세월을 두고 깎이고, 약한 부분은 더욱 부식이 심해지면서 지금의 모습으로 변해갔다는 것입니다.

결국 약한 것이 최고의 미를 만들어낸 비결이었습니다. 밀면 밀리고, 찌르면 찔리고, 치면 맞고, 때리면 깨지면서 하나님은 기막힌 작품을 빚어낸 것입니다. 그래서 그런지 고생을 많이 한 성도들을 뵈면, 그 얼굴에 인품이 점잖게 베어 있습니다. 세월이라는 도구로 하나님이 빚어낸 얼굴입니다. 나의 힘과 욕심으로 빚은 것은 남과 비교용으로 쓰입니다. 그러나, 나의 힘이 약할 그 때, 하나님은 그의 품격과 매력으로 나를 빚으셨습니다. 사람 인기에 집착한 작품은 잠시 유행 지나면 관심들이 사라집니다. 그러나, 하나님이 빚은 작품에는 사람이 끊임 없이 모입니다. 이번 다녀온 그랜드캐년과 자이언캐년은 연간 방문객 수가 평균 각각 500만 정도라고 합니다. 끊임없이 온세계에서 방문객이 이것을 보기 위해 몰려옵니다. 약한 부분이 깎이면서 남은 것이 작품 되어 수많은 관광객들을 얼마나 황홀하게 하는지… 그 원리는 지극히 성경적입니다. “…한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라” (요 12:24)

Weakness is Strength

This year’s pastoral strategy meeting gathered a bit early to prepare for the ministry of the second half of the year. Since it is only right that the incoming senior pastor leads the year-end activities, we came together early to focus on the latter half’s ministry. The place chosen for this meeting was the Grand Canyon. While it is a place most of the pastors had never been to before, I personally had a strong desire to stand humbly before our great God. And just as I expected, all of us truly became humbled. The view we gazed upon naturally drew gasps of admiration. It was unparalleled and absolute best. Even Pastor J, who used to be a missionary in Africa, thought he had seen all things vast in Africa, confessed that he was speechless and was in awe before the Grand Canyon. Pastor B repeatedly expressed his hope to rent an RV and come back to Grand Canyon with his family for vacation.

No matter how much I think about it, Monument Valley feels like God’s greatest masterpiece. The way He erected those red structures in the middle of the wilderness was a wonder. Even a master sculptor could not have carved them like that. However, I came to learn that this beautiful artwork was made of sandstone, meaning it was washed away, carved, and cut by wind, rain, and storms. If it were a stone like steel, it would have remained the same even as time passed. But because its material is fundamentally weak, it eroded over time by wind and rain; as the weaker parts suffered worse corrosion, it transformed into the shape it holds today.

In the end, weakness was the secret behind creating the ultimate beauty. Yielding when pushed, giving way when pierced, taking the blow when struck, and breaking when hit—this is how God shaped an astounding masterpiece. Perhaps that is why when I look at believers who have gone through a lot of hardships, their faces are graced with a gentle character. It is a face shaped by God using time as His tool. What is shaped by my own strength and greed is only used for comparison with others. However, when my strength is weak, God shapes me with His character and charm. Popular artwork loses interest once the brief trend passes. But people endlessly gather around masterpieces shaped by God. I hear that the Grand Canyon and Zion Canyon, which we visited this time, attract an average of about 5 million visitors each annually. Visitors continuously flock from all over the world to see this. How enchanting it is for countless tourists to see what remains after the weak parts were carved away into a work of art… That principle is profoundly biblical. “…Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24)
