Spiritual Father, Praying Mother

Rev. Tae Heon Jo

Last week’s Mother’s Day was particularly meaningful to me. I came to America right after my father’s funeral last year. This year, one year later, my mother went to heaven. I used to think that it was good enough to just send money to them on Parent’s Day(Mother’s Day), and to video chat showing my children. But now that my parents are no longer on this earth, I feel sad. It isn’t just sadness, but rather I feel empty? Dull? It is a strange feeling of missing something important in my life.

I tried everything I could to not think about my parents because I didn’t want to get wrapped up in the complicated emotion. However, people around me would not leave me alone. I shed tears during Lord’s Day sermon, when Rev. Hwang shared stories about parents. After worship, I cried when many people came up to me, holding my hands, said, “Ah, Pastor you must be thinking a lot about your mother.” And then during dinner, I couldn’t digest when my wife said, “Honey, don’t you miss your mother?” As all things happen in my life by God’s will and providence, I feel through this Parent’s Day(Mother’s Day), that God has prepared for me a new understanding and grace.

I remember something an Elder and his wife said to me. “Ah, Pastor, your mother must have been very proud of you for becoming a pastor. How much she must have prayed for her son(you) each time you preached? Now that your mother is in heaven, we will pray for you each time you preach.”

I realize that it is through my mother’s prayers that I am here. Even though my physical parents are not here, I am grateful that I was being strengthened by prayers of spiritual parents all around me. Although it is not said, I know well that many of Bethel’s fathers and mothers are praying for me, my family, and the ministry.

I send my heart of appreciation to our Senior pastor and his wife, who have always been my strong spiritual parents, and to fathers and mothers I have met at this beautiful Bethel community. If you are praying for me as I stand on the pulpit today to deliver God’s word, I know that Holy Spirit will proclaim through me of His precious grace to Bethel families.
