지난 메모리얼 데이에 애틀란타 메이저리그 야구팀 브레이브즈의 경기장에서 야구 경기가 있었습니다. 마침 비가 내렸지만, 팬데믹 이후 모처럼 열린 경기라 다들 흥분된 분위기 속에서 경기는 시작되었습니다. 그러던 중, 한 야구팬이 우산을 펼쳐 들었습니다. 유니폼을 입고 있던 주니어 생도(J.ROTC)에게 다가가 우산을 받쳐준 일이 화제가 되었습니다. 브레이브즈 경기장에는 ‘돌아오지 못하는 장병을 위한 좌석’(the POW-MIA Chair of Honor)이 있는데, 그 옆에서 경기는 아랑곳하지 않고, 그 좌석만 바라보며 나라를 위해 싸워준 군인들을 향해 존경을 표하던 생도에게 야구팬이 우산을 씌워준 것입니다. 이 사진이 “존중(respect)”이라는 단어와 함께 SNS에 돌면서 많은 사람의 감동을 자아냈습니다. 어떤 분은 이것이 미국을 세계에서 가장 강한 나라로 만든 저력이라고 평가하기도 했습니다.

미국 사람들이 제일 좋아하는 경기인 미식축구 결승전 수퍼볼은, 미군이 어디 있든지 인공위성을 써서라도 생방송으로 중계해 줍니다. 나라를 위해 생명을 걸고 싸우는 장병들을 위로하기 위해서라면 무엇이든지 하겠다는 뜻입니다. 지금도 비행기에 탑승할 때, 제일 먼저 군인들을 태우는 전통을 보면 군인이 된 것이 얼마나 자랑스러울까 싶습니다. 점심을 판매한다는 기내 방송이 나오자마자 아프간에 배치되기 위해서 비행기를 타고 가는 기내에 있는 모든 군인을 대접하겠다고 선뜻 나선 한 승객의 흐뭇한 이야기를 통해서도, 미국 사람들이 나라를 위해 싸워주는 군인들을 얼마나 고맙게 생각하는지 알 수 있습니다.

얼마 전 팬데믹 상황 속에서 더 어려워진 작은 교회를 섬기는 목사님들을 격려하는 모임에 다녀왔습니다. 큰 금액은 아니지만 어려울 때에 교회를 지키고 섬기는 동역자들을 돕자는 뜻깊은 모임에 동참하는 마음으로 다녀왔습니다. 돌아오지 못한 장병을 위해 빈 의자를 마련해 주듯이, 혹은 파병 군인들의 기내 점심값을 조용히 내주듯이, 이런 모임을 계획한 은퇴 목사님과 기금모금 단체가 있어서 참 감사했습니다.

비 맞는 생도에게 우산을 받쳐주던 사람처럼, 우리에게도 따듯한 마음을 나누며 서로에게 우산을 씌워주는 존중의 문화가 있습니다. 오늘도 교회를 사랑하고, 연약한 성도님들을 돕기 위해 정성스럽게 음식을 만들어 배달하는 분들, 교회의 엔진룸인, 새벽기도의 자리를 조용히 지키며 눈물로 기도하시는 분들, 목회자 사무실에 소리도 없이 먹을 것을 두고 가시는 우렁각시들, 안 보이는 성도님들이 혹 아프신 것은 아닌가, 따듯한 안부 전화를 돌리는 미래의 셀목자님들, 매 주일 땀 흘리며 자원봉사로 섬기시는 신실한 분들의 손에 시원한 아이스 커피를 쥐어주고 가는 무명의 성도님들 … 우리에게 이렇게 서로 우산을 받쳐주는 작은 친절로 만들어가는 존중의 문화가 더욱 번져가기를 기도합니다.

Hold Umbrella for Others

There was a game in the home field of a Major League team, Atlanta Braves on Memorial Day. Although it rained, because it was a game with spectators for the first time since pandemic, the game began with everyone in great excitement. Then one of the baseball fans opened an umbrella. He went over to a JROTC member and held up the umbrella for him. This became a hot topic. In the Braves baseball field, there is ‘The POW-MIA Chair of Honor’. Not paying attention to the game, while this person wearing JROTC uniform stood staring at the chair and giving respect to those soldiers fought for our country, the fan went over and held up the umbrella for him. Picture of this with the word “Respect” went viral on social media, stirring many people’s emotions. Some people assessed that this is what makes U.S. the strongest nation in the world.

Americans love football games. Football’s final game Super Bowl, will always broadcast live to American soldiers wherever they are stationed, even if it means to move a satellite to do it. This means that they will do anything to comfort those soldiers who are putting their lives on the line to fight for the country. Even now when boarding an airplane, there is a tradition of boarding soldiers first. How proud they must feel to be a soldier. We hear heartwarming stories of passengers, as soon as food purchase announcement was made, who offered to buy food for all the soldiers on the plane on their way to be stationed in Afghanistan. We see how thankful Americans are to these soldiers fighting for the country.

Not too long ago I went to a meeting to encourage pastors of small churches who are going through difficult times due to pandemic. I went with desire to support my colleagues who are doing their best to keep their churches afloat in the midst of difficult time. I wanted to participate in the support of financial effort with a small amount. Like keeping an empty chair for a soldier who did not return and quietly paying lunch for an injured veteran, I am truly grateful for retired pastors who organized this effort for financial support.

Like holding up an umbrella for a JROTC member standing in rain, we also have a culture of sharing our hearts and respect for others. Because of their love for the church, we have people making and delivering food to members who are in need. There are those that tearfully pray, quietly keeping our prayers going at early morning prayer meetings, our church’s engine room. There are people who come in quietly to pastors’ office to drop off food, cell leaders calling on those who they haven’t seen for a while to make sure that they are well, and handing ice coffee to volunteers who faithfully serve every Sunday… I pray for spreading of this culture of kindness and respect of holding an umbrella for each other.
