고등학교 때, 국사(國史) 선생님이 첫 수업 시간에 한자로 칠판에 國史라 쓰면서 “앞으로 배울 우리나라의 역사는 주위 강대국들에 의해 두들겨 맞은 애꾸눈의 역사다”라고 했던 말이 지금도 선명하게 뇌리에 남아 있습니다. 나라 국(國), 그러고 보니 꼭 애꾸눈 같이 생겼습니다. 지정학적 위치로 보아 한반도는 나라가 힘이 없을 때, 주위 나라에 교두보 역할을 해야 하기 때문에 늘 전쟁터가 될 수밖에 없었습니다. 열강의 대륙 진출 혹은 해양을 향한 야망에 한반도는 늘 전쟁에 얼룩질 수밖에 없는 역사를 가졌습니다. 그러나 반대로 생각하면, 나라가 힘이 있으면 세계를 향해 뻗어 갈 수 있는 전략적인 위치가 또한 한반도입니다. 고구려 광개토왕이 대륙을 향해 영토를 넓혔던 시절이나, 바다를 장악했던 장보고 시절이 좋은 예가 아닐까 싶습니다. 대한민국이 가장 어려웠던 시절에 복음이 한반도를 뒤흔들더니, 지금 유일한 분단국가임에도 불구하고 전쟁의 폐허에서 경제 대국으로 일어나게 되고, 미국 다음으로 복음을 많이 수출하는 나라가 되었습니다. 해외 입양 기구로 널리 알려진 컴패션에 의하면 한때 고아 수출 1등인 나라로 수혜를 누리던 나라가 세계의 고아들을 입양 후원하는 1등 나라로 전환된 유일한 국가가 한국이라고 합니다.

이렇듯 분단된 조그만 나라에서 한류가 급물살을 탄 듯 세계를 향하여 뻗어 가는 것도 예사롭지 않습니다. 왜 세계가 한국 음악, 한국 드라마, 한국 문화에 열광하는지 신기하기만 합니다. 정말로 전통적인 한국 문화를 세계에 수출하는 것이라면 모를까, K-POP이 순수하게 한국적이라고 꼭 말할 수는 없을 것 같은데, 모든 세계가 다 아는 노래가 되었다는 싸이의 ‘오빤 강남 스타일!’과 지금 빌보드 챠트에서 7주째 1등을 하고있는 BTS의 ‘버터’라는 곡이 유로 축구 결승전에서 공연되는 것이나, 한국 여성 아이돌 그룹 블랙핑크의 인기 등 한류의 인기는 엎질러진 물처럼 걷잡을 수가 없습니다.

세계는 한류에 열광하는데, 유독 북한만은 한류를 막아보려고 애를 씁니다. 남조선 말투나 창법을 쓰면 징역 2년, 드라마를 보면 15년 징역이라는 법을 만들어 단속하고 있습니다. 동무, 혹은 동지라 불러야 하는데, ‘자기야’ 한다든지, 남편을 ‘여보’ 대신에 ‘오빠’라 부르면 잡혀간다고 합니다. 그래도 15년 감옥 갈 생각하고 한국 드라마를 열심히 보면서 우리의 말투를 흉내 낸다고 하니 웃지 않을 수 없습니다. 바라건대, 요즘 우리 막내딸이 좋아하는 [슬기로운 의사 생활]도 북한으로 수출되어 훈훈한 인간미가 한류를 타고 넘쳤으면 좋겠습니다. 그리고 이 한류에 복음의 돛단배를 띄워 복음 수출의 마지막 사명을 감당하는 한국이 되면 좋겠습니다.

Korean Wave

When I was in high school, my history teacher came into class on the first day and wrote down two words History of Nation in Chinese characters and said, “What you will learn in our nation’s history is that we have a one-eyed history of being bitten down by surrounding stronger nations”. What he said remains in my mind today. When you look at the character Nation(國), it looks like one-eyed face. When we were weak, geopolitical location of Korean peninsula became a bridge to surrounding nations. This made our country a constant battleground. History of our peninsula, from ambition by greater power on land and sea, could only be stained with wars. But, on the flip side, if the nation is strong, Korean peninsula is a strategic location that can expand and stretch out into the world. Perhaps, this could have been the case during Kogyuryo Empire when king Gwanggaeto expanded the territory toward continents, and during Jang Bo-go era, that ruled Yellow Sea. During Korea’s most difficult time, gospel came and shook the peninsula. Regardless of being a divided country, we have risen from pit of battles to an economic superpower. We now export gospel to the world right behind U.S. According to Compassion International, an overseas adoption agency, a country that at one time had the most orphans in the world is now number 1 in providing help for orphans around the world. This is Korea.

This small divided country is expanding out into the world with rush of Korean Waves. I am amazed how the entire world is fascinated by Korean music, Korean Drama, and Korean culture. It is not necessarily about traditional Korean culture. We can’t really say that K-pop is traditional Korean. Nonetheless, the entire world knew Psy’s “Oppa Kangnam Style!” BTS’s song ‘Butter’ is currently charting number one on Billboards for 7 weeks in a row and also being shown at European Soccer Finals, and the popularity of Korean girl idol group, Black-Pink, and more. It is hard to get a handle on Korean Wave like spilled water

The world is excited with Korean Wave. Only North Korea is trying everything to stop this Korean Wave. They made laws to stop this wave in the country. If South Korean words or accent are used, they are prisoned for 2 years. If they are caught watching Korean Drama, they are prisoned for 15 years. They have to address each other as friends or comrades. If they call their spouse ‘yeobo’(honey) or ‘oppa’(endearment for husband), they will be arrested. Even though they know they will be put in prison for 15 years, they still watch Korean Dramas and try to copy our ways of speaking. It’s almost comical. Hopefully, [Hospital Playlist], a K-drama that my daughter enjoys watching, will expand to North Korea, bringing warm humanity to them on this Korean Wave. And, I would like to see us as Koreans fulfill the last great commission by sending a boat of gospel on this Korean Wave.
