Things Above vs. Things Below
Rev. Bryan Kim
Last weekend, I had an exhibition of my artwork at the church café. Never in my life did I imagine such a thing would happen. What started as a small hobby—filling empty spaces with calligraphy and simple watercolors—grew as I enjoyed it more, and as I framed and presented pieces to church members during their business opening or housewarming worship services. Over time, these accumulated, leading to an art exhibition that still feels surreal to me. To be sure, its value as fine art is minimal, but I believe it has reached this point today as a fruitful result of the congregants joyfully accepting these pieces during pastoral visits, knowing they were crafted by their senior pastor.
While thinking about the theme for the exhibition, the passage in Colossians 3 came to mind: “Set your mind on things above” and “Seek things above”. Coincidentally today, my commentary on Colossians, [Clothe Yourself Only in Jesus!], was published and presented to the church members for the first time. As I mentioned during my sermon then, seeking the things above is the most powerful way to live in today’s reality. Looking only at heaven can easily draw criticism for being impractical. However, if you seek the things above, you can gain both the things above and the things of the earth; but if you seek the things of the earth, you will lose both.
Suddenly, a memory from my trip to Alaska last week crossed my mind. While chatting with the locals there, I burst out laughing when I heard that Alaskans refer to people from the contiguous United States as “those from below”. It was a humorous nickname filled with pride in living in a higher place geographically, closer to the Arctic Circle. I think that we believers are the ones who truly live looking towards the spiritual ‘high place’. This is because we are not ‘those from below’ who live bound by worldly standards or earthly values, but ‘people of above’ who follow the laws of the Kingdom of God and long for the holy values of the high heavens.
This exhibition was not merely a place to show off the results of a hobby. It was a meaningful and rewarding time to share God’s word captured in my humble brushstrokes and to reaffirm with all the congregants where ‘above—the place we should look toward’ really is. Now, beyond my active ministry, I dream another dream, naming my post-retirement ministry [Things Above Ministry: TAM]. Even after stepping down from my current active ministry, my gaze toward the Kingdom of God will never turn downward. Longing even more for divine things, I resolve to live a life that constantly seeks and asks for ‘things above’ until the final moment of my life. I believe that if we always seek the things above with a heart longing for God’s divine things, God will fill even our earthly lives in the most beautiful and abundant way.
