신앙의 길을 오래 걸어온 이들이 공통으로 고백하는 문장이 있습니다. “은혜 아니면 여기까지 올 수 없었습니다.” 이 말은 단순한 겸손의 수사가 아니라, 자신의 삶을 정직하게 대면한 이들이 발견한 유일한 진실입니다. 우리가 오늘 이 자리에 서 있는 것은 우리의 선택이 완벽했기 때문도, 믿음이 흔들림 없었기 때문도 아닙니다. 오히려 수많은 실패와 후회, 넘어짐의 순간이 더 많았음에도 불구하고 여전히 믿음의 테두리 안에 머물고 있다는 사실 자체가 거절할 수 없는 은혜의 증거입니다.

은혜의 본질은 ‘자격 없음’에 있습니다. 성경의 역사를 돌이켜보면 하나님은 준비된 완벽한 사람보다, 결핍투성이인 사람들을 들어 사용하셨습니다. 살인자였던 모세, 간음했던 다윗, 스승을 부인한 베드로, 박해자였던 바울까지, 그들 중 은혜라는 버팀목 없이 바로 설 수 있었던 이는 아무도 없었습니다. 우리 역시 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 신앙을 굳게 붙잡고 있는 것 같지만, 실상은 하나님의 강한 손이 우리를 먼저, 그리고 더 깊이 붙들고 계셨기에 오늘이 가능했습니다.

우리는 흔히 은혜를 ‘고난의 부재’로 오해하곤 합니다. 그러나 참된 은혜는 고난을 제거하기보다 그 고난의 의미를 새롭게 해석하게 하는 힘입니다. 도저히 감당할 수 없을 것 같던 절망의 시간이, 지나고보니 하나님께 더 가까이 나아가는 유일한 통로였음을 깨닫게 합니다. 그래서 은혜를 아는 사람은 칠흑 같은 어둠 속에서도 다시 일어설 용기를 얻습니다. “주님이 함께하신다면, 나는 다시 걸을 수 있습니다”라는 고백은 은혜를 통과한 자만이 가질 수 있는 단단한 확신입니다.

은혜를 잊는 순간 신앙은 무거운 짐이 되고 예배는 메마른 의무가 됩니다. 하지만 은혜를 기억하는 순간, 신앙은 가슴 벅찬 기쁨이 되고 헌신은 거절할 수 없는 특권이 됩니다. 오늘 내가 숨을 쉬고, 말씀을 대하며, 다시 회개할 마음이 남아 있다는 것—이 모든 작고 당연해 보이는 일상이 사실은 기적 같은 은혜입니다.

결국, 우리 인생의 파노라마를 한 문장으로 요약한다면 결국 이 말밖에는 남지 않을 것입니다. “은혜 아니면.” 우리는 오늘도 그 고백의 토대 위에서 살아갑니다.

If Not for Grace

Those who have walked in faith for many years share a common confession. “If not for grace, I would never have come this far.” This is not merely a humble expression, but a truth discovered through honest reflection on one’s life. We are not standing here today because our choices were always right or our faith was always strong. The very fact that we remain in faith despite countless failures, regrets and falls is undeniable evidence of grace.

The essence of grace lies in our ‘undeserving nature’. Throughout the history of Scripture, God worked not through perfect people, but through flawed ones. Moses, a murderer; David, an adulterer; Peter, who denied his teacher; Paul, once a persecutor—none of them could stand without grace. We are no different. We may think we are holding tightly to our faith, but in reality, it is God’s strong hand that first— and more firmly—held onto us, making today possible.

We often misunderstand grace as a life without suffering. However, grace does not remove hardship, but gives us a new perspective on it. What once felt unbearable becomes, through grace, the very path that leads us closer to God. So those who know grace can rise again, even in the darkest moments. And they will confidently say, “If the Lord is with me, I can walk again.”

When grace is forgotten, faith becomes a heavy burden and worship becomes a duty. But when grace is remembered, faith becomes overwhelmed joy and devotion an irresistible privilege. This ordinary day—breathing, hearing the Word, and being able to repent—is itself a miraculous act of grace.

If the panorama of our lives were summed up in one sentence, this confession would remain. “If not for grace.” Even today, we stand on that confession.
