작년에 우간다 단기선교를 다녀왔습니다. 아프리카는 여러 나라를 다녀보고 살아보아서 ‘기왕이면 안 가본 나라면 좋겠다’ 생각했습니다. 그러다 코트야드 우간다 부스에서 권사님들께서 “같이 가실 거죠?” 물어보셨을 때 우물쭈물했는데… 결국 두어달 후 저는 우간다행 비행기 안에 있었습니다. 비행기에서는 벌써 복귀하면 할 리스트들로 머릿속이 가득차 있었습니다. 그런데 도착해서 공항 밖으로 나오자 펼쳐지는 정겨운 풍경에 제 마음이 활짝 열렸습니다. 마치 38년 전 어린시절로 시간 여행한 느낌이었습니다.

예기치 못한 은혜들이 많았습니다. 흙먼지가 날리는 시골길을 지나 도착한 장애인센터에서 아이들이 춤추며 맞이해 준 것으로 시작해 어딜 가든 찬송과 춤이 있었는데요. 비록 제가 알던 스텝은 아니었지만 (사실 알아도 못 추지만요!) 오랜만에 함께 리듬을 타며 웃었습니다. 또 가는 곳마다 예배 후에 성도님들이 헌물을 가져왔는데, 바나나, 사탕수수, 염소 한 마리, 계란 두 알 등 그 순수한 마음이 계속 남았습니다. 한번은 섬으로 들어가는데 여객선이 고장 나서 통통배를 타고(바가지로 새는 물을 퍼내며!), 또 내려서는 오토바이를 타고 간 사역 현장 속에도 특별한 기쁨을 주신 여정이었습니다.

평생 의료선교를 다니신 장로님들과 권사님들의 마음가짐과 사랑에도 서로 은혜가 되었 습니다. 그동안 의료사역만 하셨던 권사님들은 ‘이번에는 우리도 아동사역을 하자’ 준비하셨는데, 정말 엄마의 마음으로 마음껏 안아주시며 아이들과 행복해한 모습이 떠오릅니다. 그리고 선교사님들과의 일상과 간증을 통해 그 시골까지 보내신 하나님의 마음과 소명을 헤아려 보았고, 또 세워져 가는 현지 사역자들을 보며 그 땅을 향한 기도제목들이 하나 둘 마음에 새겨졌습니다.

물론 여정 속에 불편함이 있습니다. 하지만 단기선교는 우리를 영적으로 깨우시는 시간 입니다. 그동안 나로 가득차 있던 세상에서, 눈을 들어 하나님께서 일하시는 현장과 영혼들을 보게 하십니다. 그래서 꿈 같았던 시간이 지나 복귀하는 길에서는 이미 달라진 삶의 관점을 느낍니다. 그래서 모두 ‘선교는 가는 자가 가장 큰 은혜를 경험한다’고 고백하게 됩니다. 올 해의 일정을 다 알 수는 없지만, 때로는 미지의 발걸음이 필요합니다. 나를 은혜의 현장으로 밀어 넣을 때도 필요합니다. 믿음으로 sign up 하시면 하나님께서 길을 열어주실줄 믿습니다. 희년의 해에, 그 어느 때보다 특별한 예기치 못한 은혜가 있을 것이라 확신합니다.

Last year I went on a short-term mission trip to Uganda. I’ve been to many African countries before. I thought ‘I might as well go to a country that I’ve never been to.’ Just then deaconesses with Uganda mission booth asked, “will you go with us?” I hesitated to give my answer at the time. Two months later, I was on an airplane bound for Uganda. In the airplane, my head was being filled with a list of things to do when we return. Upon arrival, as soon as we stepped outside of the airport, seeing such beautiful and familiar scenery, my heart opened wide. It felt like I traveled back in time to my childhood 38 years ago.

There were numerous blessings of grace that was unexpected. Starting with being welcomed by children dancing at the Center for persons with disabilities after driving through dirt roads, there were praising and dancing wherever we went. They were not familiar steps (even if I knew, I wouldn’t be able to dance!), but We laughed and danced to the rhythm. Wherever we went, people brought gift offerings of bananas, sugar canes, a goat, couple of eggs, etc. Their pure hearts remain with me still. We were traveling to an island one day. The ferry broke, so we had to take a small fishingboat (scooping water out of the leaking boat!). After the boat ride, we went to our destination by motorcycles. The place of ministry gave us great joy.

Attitudes and love of Elders and Deaconesses in the team, who traveled for medical missions all their lives, filled us with grace. Deaconesses, who were dedicated to medical missions, prepared for children’s ministry this time. I am reminded of the joy as they embraced the children with hearts of mother. Through the local missionaries’ daily lives and testimonies, we realized God’s heart for sending them to such remote area. Seeing growth of local leaders for the ministry prayers for this land were engraved into my heart.

Of course, the journey isn’t easy. But a short-term mission awakens our spiritual self. In a world that has been all about me, God allows us to see the places where He is working, and the souls that He is touching. As the time of the trip passed like a dream, upon return, I feel a change in the perspective of life. That is how we can confess about all missions that ‘greatest grace is experienced by those who go.’ We may not know all the schedule ahead of us this year, but sometimes unknown steps are necessary. Sometimes, it’s necessary to push ourselves into the place of grace. If you sign up by faith, God will open a way. In this jubilee year, more than any other time, I am confident that there will be unexpected special grace for us.
