지난주 ‘병거타고 달려오는 하나님’에 대한 설교를 했습니다. 많은 성도님이 말씀에 ‘사기충천’했다고 피드백을 주셨습니다. 사기는 원래 군사용어입니다. 전쟁에 나간 군사들이 전투 의욕이 상승할 때, 사기가 올랐다고 합니다. 성도님들이 병거 타고 우리를 돕기 위해 달려오시는 하나님의 모습에 사기가 올랐다는 말은 가만히 있는 상태가 아니라, 전투 의욕이 올랐다는 뜻일 것입니다. 오늘도 시시각각 우리를 넘어뜨리려는 수작을 피우는 것이 사탄입니다. 온 삶을 던져 하나님께 헌신했다는 제자들이 모여서 누가 더 크냐? 비교하고 있을 때, 주님이 하셨던 말씀이 “사탄이 너희를 밀 까부르듯 하려고 요구하였으나”(눅 22:31)는 것이었습니다. 사탄의 수작은 오늘, 이 글을 읽는, 성도들에게 더 구체적으로 찾아온다는 뜻일 것입니다. 성도들이 늘 대면해야 하는 문제들은 결코 녹녹치 않습니다. 열심히 했지만, 바라던 결과를 얻지 못할 때도 있고, 때로는 실패할 때도 있습니다. ‘나는 노력해도 안 되나 보다’ 낙심하고 있을 때, ’병거 타고 달려 오시는 하나님’의 비전을 본다면 다시 전투 의욕을 불태우며 일어설 수 있을 것입니다.

우리가 한 가지 명심할 것은 전쟁에서 승리하는 비결은 사기도 충천해 있어야 하지만, 군사들의 군기가 바로 서 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 성도들이 사기는 잔뜩 올라 있는데, 영적 전쟁의 현장을 다시 맞닥뜨리면 종종 패배의 쓴잔을 마시곤 합니다. 그 이유는 군기가 바로 서 있지 않기 때문입니다. 사기가 올라가면 군기가 엉망이 되고, 군기가 바짝 서면, 사기는 죽어 낭떠러지로 추락하는 것이 일반입니다. 그러나, 우리가 싸우는 영적 전쟁은 사기와 군기가 같이 올라 있어야 승리가 보장됩니다. ‘잘 해줘봤자 소용없다’라는 말, ‘원칙만 고수하다가 사람 잃어버렸다’라는 말은 사기와 군기가 균형을 잃어버린 현상입니다. 신앙생활에도 사기와 군기의 균형이 필요합니다.

예배에 선포되는 말씀을 통해서 사기가 올랐는데 현장에서 자주 실패를 경험했다면, 저는 신앙의 기본기 습득을 위해 제자훈련을 받으시라고 권하고 싶습니다. 신앙의 골격을 잡는 것이 제자훈련입니다. 몸의 균형을 잃었다면 비뚤어진 골격을 바로잡는 것이 건강의 비결입니다. 군기 없이 사기만 가지고 전쟁에 나간다면 그것은 첨단 무기를 가지고 있으면서 작동 방법을 모르는 것과 같습니다.

한 턱 쏘면 기분이 좋아 사기가 오릅니다. 사기를 계속 올린다고 좋은 식당에서 계속 밥만 사주면 기분은 좋아질지 모르지만, 자기 절제를 모르고 운동을 꾸준히 하는 기본이 없으면 몸의 균형을 잃고 비만이 될 것입니다. 우리는 모두 보이지 않는 영적 전쟁에 나가 있는 군사들입니다. 사기가 하늘을 찌르는 영적 분위기와 말씀의 훈련을 땀 흘려 받는 군기로 백전백승의 거룩한 용사들이 되십시다.

To Win A War

Last week, I gave a sermon on ‘God coming on a chariot’. I received many feedbacks from congregation that their ‘morale was uplifted’. Morale is originally a military term. When fighting spirit increases for soldiers at war, we say that the morale is high. High morale from seeing the image of God coming to help us on a chariot is not a state of stillness. It means that the fighting spirit has risen. Even today, Satan is scheming to make us fall every moment by moment. When disciples, who dedicated their lives to the Lord, gathered and compared who is greater, Jesus said, “Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat.”(Lu 22:31) It means that Satan’s schemes will find you, the congregation that are reading this column today. The problems that our congregation faces all the time are never easy. Despite our best efforts, there are times when results are not as expected. We even fail at times. “It doesn’t work for me no matter how much I try”. When we are disappointed, if we can see the vision of ‘God coming to us on a chariot’, we can rise up again with fighting spirit.

One thing we must remember is that, although the victory at war requires high morale, soldiers must have the right discipline. Congregations’ morale might be high, yet we often taste defeat when we run into spiritual battles. That is because we don’t have the right discipline. Even when our morale is high, our discipline is messed up. When we have the right discipline, our morale may have fallen off a cliff and dies. However, in the spiritual battle, we must have high morale as well as right discipline to seal a victory. Sayings like ‘what’s the use trying’, ‘sticking to principles will lose people’ are results from which morale and discipline are out of balance. Morale and discipline are required even in believer’s life of faith.

Even though your morale may be high from hearing proclamation of the Word at worship, if you often experience failure in your place of life, then I encourage you to learn the basics by taking Discipleship Training. Framework of faith is accomplished by discipleship training. If your body has lost its balance, then it’s important to reshape the frame of your body to be healthy again. Going to battlefield without discipline and only with morale is like having an advanced weapon and not knowing how to operate it.

Your morale gets lifted when you treat people to a meal. If you keep going to good restaurants to treat people in order to boost your morale, you may feel good, but loose self-control. If you don’t have the basics of consistent exercise, you will lose your body’s balance and instead gain weight. We are all soldiers in an invisible spiritual battlefield. Let’s become holy warriors of hundred battles and hundred victories, with soaring spiritual morale and hard-earned discipline from training of the Word.
