미국에 발을 딛고 처음 맞이하는 여름입니다. 온 성도님들과 함께 제1회 한여름의 뜨거운 기도 바람으로 뜨겁게 기도했고, 제6회 한여름의 시원한 신학 강좌로 시원한 깨달음을 얻었습니다. 뜨거운 영성으로 하나님의 사랑을 경험하고, 차가운 지성으로 내 옆에 있는 사람과 공동체, 더 나아가 소외된 이들을 향한 사랑에 분별이 필요함을 알게 되었지요. 온 교회가 함께 뜨겁게 타오르자고 구호를 외칠 때는 나도 질세라 열심을 내야 하는 시기이고, 이 시대를 향한 차갑고 냉철한 분별력이 요구될 때는 날이 서도록 지식의 칼날을 갈아야 하는 때입니다. 어중간하게 있으면서 뜨겁지도, 차갑지도 않다면 미지근함의 적당함이 아닙니다. 이것은 중도가 아니라 지금 내가 무엇을 선택하고 무엇을 따라야 하는지에 대한 의미, 바로 “때”에 대한 말입니다.

“라오디게아 교회의 사자에게 편지하라 아멘이시요 충성되고 참된 증인이시요 하나님의 창조의 근본이신 이가 이르시되 내가 네 행위를 아노니 네가 차지도 아니하고 뜨겁지도 아니하도다 네가 차든지 뜨겁든지 하기를 원하노라 네가 이같이 미지근하여 뜨겁지도 아니하고 차지도 아니하니 내 입에서 너를 토하여 버리리라.”(요한계시록 3장 14-16절) 소아시아 7 교회 중 하나인 라오디게아 교회가 있던 지역은, 물이 좋지 않아 멀리서 물을 가져와 사용했다고 합니다. 히에라폴리스에서 오는 뜨거운 온천수는 의료와 공업용수로, 골로새에서의 차가운 물은 식수로 썼죠. 그런데 뜨거운 온천수가 식으면 석회가 생겨 사용할 수가 없고, 차가운 물이 식으면 맛이 써져서 먹을 수가 없었다고 합니다. 자칫 배관을 통해 흘러오던 물이 식으면 아무 생각 없이 마시다가 토해 버리는 일이 빈번했다고 하니, 계시록에 선포된 말씀이 당시 라오디게아 성도들의 귀에 는 쏙쏙 들어왔을 것 같습니다.

끝나지 않을 것 같은 전쟁에 이은 경제 여파, 돌연 다시 확산하는 코로나 바이러스로 인한 위축, 포스트 모더니즘이 낳은 수많은 이론들. 지금 이 시대를 살아가는 우리는 어떤 때를 보내야 할까요? 우리 주님은 하나님 아버지의 말씀에 늘 “아멘”이셨고, 하나님 나라의 일에 뜨겁게 “충성”되시며, 진리에 대해서는 서슬 퍼렇게 “증인”이셨습니다. 강단에서 선포되는 말씀에 늘 아멘으로 화답하고, 교회 공동체를 위해서는 충성되게 섬기며, 내게 주신 구원의 확신에 있어서는 어떤 상황에도 증인 된 삶을 살아야 하지 않겠습니까? 창조의 근본이신 주님이 우리의 행위를 아신다고 합니다. 영적 공동체에 부어주시는 성령의 흐름을 따라 뜨겁고, 차가워져야 하는데 적당히 한다며 미지근해져 있으면 토해 버리겠다고 하십니다. 본격적인 여름, 성령께서 베델교회를 통해 주시는 인도하심에 발맞춰 뜨거울 때 뜨겁고! 차가울 때 차가운! 우리가 되면 좋겠습니다.

Either Cold or Hot

This will be my first summer upon setting foot here in America. And we, together as Believers, had a time for fiery prayer in the first annual event called “Midsummer’s Blazing Winds of Prayer.” Afterwards, the 6th annual “Midsummer’s Cool Breeze Theological Conference,” blew in a new, cool and refreshing understanding. With fiery spirits, we experienced the Love of God. And with a crisp cold intellect and cool-headed insight, we learned to love our neighbors and our community, and especially those whom society has neglected. The whole church shouted out, “Let’s all get fired up!” And with zeal in that moment, I knew it was time to get to work. I realized that the time has come to sharpen our minds in accordance to the demands of this day and age; with an icy, but sober discernment. If you stay half hearted and indecisive, being neither hot nor cold, it is to be lukewarm. This is not acceptable. There is no middle ground in this matter. This is the time to declare the truth of what I believe in and proclaim the way in which I will live.

“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” -Revelation 3:14-16 NIV. Among the seven churches of Asia Minor, the Church of Laodicea was located in a place where you had to import water. The hot water from the springs of Hierapolis was brought in for medicinal and industrial purposes. The cold waters from Colossae were used for drinking. However, when the water from the hot springs cools down, limestone would appear and the water could no longer be used. And when the cold water loses its chill, it becomes bitter making it undrinkable. Frequently, many would drink lukewarm water from unknown sources and vomit it up. Thus, the Laodiceans were quite familiar to this message from the Book of Revelation.

The seemingly unending economic aftermath from a never-ending war, the worsening decay from the recurring coronavirus outbreak, and the many confusing theories that spawn from postmodern thinking, all make us wonder, “How are we supposed to live in such a time as this?” Our Lord always responded with, “Amen,” to God the Father. He was completely devoted and “loyal” to the work of the Kingdom of God. And when it comes to declaring the truth, our Lord was the boldest “Witness” for the cause. As we respond with amens to the preaching from the pulpit, and as we loyally serve the church community, shouldn’t we, also, live with the complete assurance of our salvation and be a faithful witness no matter what the circumstances? The Lord God, The First Cause and Creator of all Creation, knows everything we do. As members in our spiritual community, we ought to be extreme, being either hot or cold in every effort as the Holy Spirit leads. But if we are only doing just enough to get by, then we are considered lukewarm and will be vomited out. It is now the primetime of this summer! Bethel Church! Let us keep in step with the Holy Spirit. Let us be hot when called to be hot. Let us be cold when called to be cold. Let us be as fierce as He has called us to be.
