하나님은 어디에나 계십니다. 그러나 선교 현장에 하나님은 더 계신 것 같습니다. 신학적으로 이 말은 틀린 말이지만, 하나님의 역사가 선교 현장에서 더 강하게 나타나시는 것은 분명합니다. 이번에 튀르키예 안탈리아에서 40여 명의 베델팀이 섬겼던 교회 개척자 가족수양회는 하나님의 강력한 역사를 체험하는 현장이었습니다. 튀르키예 곳곳에서 교회를 개척하는 목회자들과 이들을 지원하며 섬기는 선교사님들이 튀르키예 및 이집트, 조지아, 이라크 등에서 약 300여명이 모여 함께 예배하며 안식과 회복과 재충전의 기회를 가졌습니다.

튀르키예 교회의 지도자 중 한 분인 이산 목사는 모슬렘 가족에서 태어났지만, 대학교 때 호기심으로 읽은 신약성경 때문에 예수님에 대한 궁금함이 생겼으나 물어 볼 교회를 찾을 수 없었다고 합니다. 그때가 1985년이었습니다. 사도바울이 전도하며 종횡무진 다녔던 터키 반도, 2천 년이 지난 지금도 순례객이 끊이지 않고 계속 오는 이 곳에 크리스천이 함께 모여 예배드리는 교회가 하나도 없었다는 것이 믿어지지 않을 정도였습니다. 튀르키예 선교사로 20년간 섬겼던 분도 한 명의 성도를 얻지 못했다고 고백할 정도로 영적으로 척박했던 이 땅에 70여 교회 개척지의 목회자 가정을 초대해서 수양회를 했다는 것은 기적이 아닐 수 없습니다.

외부에서 선교사님들이 들어와도 교회 세우는 일이 불가능했던 이 땅에 스스로 교회를 개척하겠다는 헌신자들이 나왔다는 것이 기적입니다. 현재 우리 베델교회에서 교회 개척자가 나오는 것도 쉽지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 시리아, 이라크 및 아프간 난민들이 튀르키예에 들어와 천막을 치고 마을을 이루는 곳곳에서 교회를 세우는 일들이 불같이 일어나기 시작하고, 이에 도전받은 튀르키예에 교회 개척자들이 일어나고 있습니다. 교회가 성장해서 재정적으로 안정되고 교인 수도 늘어야 교회를 개척할 수 있다는 통념을 깨고 튀르키예 곳곳에 교회가 개척되고 있습니다.

하나님은 우리가 하는 모든 일에 관심이 있지만, 그 중 교회가 세워지는 일에 더 맘을 쓰고 계신 것이 분명합니다. 교회가 성장해야만 교회를 개척하는 것이 아니라, 크리스천이 되면 교회에 관심을 가질 수 밖에 없고, 교회가 없는 곳에 교회를 세우고 싶어 하는 것입니다. 그래서 교회를 개척한 자들이 모인 이번 수양회는 하나님의 관심이 집중된 현장이었습니다. 한 사람의 신자도 귀한데, 교회를 개척하는 목회자들은 얼마나 더 소중하겠습니까? 얼핏 보면 테러가 날 때마다 뉴스에서 보던 인상을 가진 자들이 미국과도 별로 사이가 좋지 않은 나라 속에 교회를 세우고 있다는 것이 낯설기까지 하지만, 하나님의 뜨거운 시선은 어쩌면 얼바인보다 그 땅에 더 머물고 있다는 생각을 지울 수가 없습니다.

Where is God?

God is everywhere. But, God is ever more present in mission fields. Although this statement is wrong theologically, it is clear that God’s work is revealed much stronger in mission fields. Church planters retreat in Antalya, Turkiye, with about 40 people serving from Bethel Church, was a place of experiencing God’s mighty work. Pastors who are planting churches in Turkiye and their supporting missionaries from Turkiye, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, etc., over 300 people, gathered for opportunity to worship, restore and recharge.

One of the pastors from Turkiye, Pastor Isan, was born into a Muslim family. While he was in college, he read the New Testament out of curiosity. He was intrigued by Jesus, but he could not find a church to ask questions. That was back in 1985. It’s hard to believe that there was no church where Christians could gather to worship in Turkiye peninsula. This place is where Apostle Paul traveled everywhere to evangelize. 2000 years later, there are still steady streams of people taking pilgrimage here. One of the missionaries, who served in Turkiye over 20 years, confessed that not one person converted in all those years. In this spiritually barren land, it is a miracle that we were able to invite over 70 pastors and their families to the retreat.

It’s impossible for foreign missionaries to church-plant here. It’s a miracle that local pastors, on their own, sacrifice to church-plant here. To find someone to church-plant, even from Bethel, is not an easy task. However, churches are being planted like wildfires in Turkiye where refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq are setting up tents and forming communities. Challenged by this, there are church planters rising within churches in Turkiye. They have broken the common concept that church must grow in number and financially stable to be able to plant churches. There are
churches being planted all over Turkiye now.

God cares about everything we do. However, it is clear that God’s heart is more on building churches. Church doesn’t have to be large to plant churches. As a Christian, you learn about church, and have desire to build churches where there is none. So, this retreat for church planters was the place where God’s focus was concentrated. One new believer is precious. Then, how much more precious are the church planters? At a glance, it may seem strange to plant churches in a country that we identify with terrorism, as seen on news, and that has strained relationship with U.S. I
cannot help but to think that perhaps God’s intense gaze is not on Irvine, but rather remains on their land.
