처음으로 한국에 복음이 들어간 해가 1885년입니다. 그 이후 140년 지난 지금 한국의 복음 확장력은 모든 선교 역사에 기록경신을 이루었다고 해도 과언은 아닐 것입니다. 흥선대원군의 쇄국정책으로 당시 조선은 고립되어 있었던 나라였습니다. 그 가운데, 일제강점기 36년과 동족의 전쟁을 치른 한국은 가장 가난한 나라였습니다. 그러나, 지금은 세계에서 미국 다음으로 선교사를 제일 많이 파송한 나라가 되었으며, 또한 파송한 선교사들을 후원할 만큼의 교회들이 성장하며, 세계에서 가장 규모 있는 교회 50개 중, 반 이상이 한국에 있다는 말을 들을 정도로 선교 역사에 다시 없을 만한 업적을 이루었습니다. 지금은 세계 어디를 가도 우리나라 자동차들이 도로를 점유하고, 수많은 가전제품도 made in Korea일 정도로 경제적 성장도 괄목상대 할 만합니다. 그러나, 이 같은 성장은 희생의 열매임을 간과해서는 안됩니다. 한국 최초의 순교자 로버트 토마스(Robert Jermain Thomas)는 1866년 미국의 무장된 상선 제너럴셔먼호를 타고 대동강 변에 도착했지만, 배가 폭탄에 의해 좌초되고, 토마스와 일행들은 육지로 끌려와 처참하게 군인들에게 모두 참수당하게 됩니다. 그때 토마스 선교사의 나이가 27세였습니다. 자신을 죽이려는 병사에게 성경을 전해주면서 “예수를 믿으라”고 외치고 순교 당합니다. 기록에 보면 그는 이렇게 마지막 기도를 드렸다고 합니다. “오 하나님, 이 사람이 자기의 하는 일을 모르오니 이 사람의 죄를 용서하여 주소서. 조선 땅에 뿌린 복음의 씨앗이 헛되지 않게 하소서 내 영혼을 받아주소서…”

1885년 부활절 최초의 선교사로 한국 땅을 밟았던 언더우드 선교사는 이런 기도를 드렸다고 합니다. “주여 지금은 아무것도 보이지 않습니다. 보이는 것은 고집스럽게 얼룩진 어둠뿐입니다. 어둠과 가난과 인습에 묶여 있는 조선 사람뿐입니다…지금은 우리가 서양 귀신 양귀신이라고 손가락질받고 있사오나 자녀들이 우리 영혼과 하나인 것을 깨닫고 하늘나라의 한 백성, 한 자녀임을 알고 눈물로 기뻐할 날이 있음을 믿나이다…”

이름도 없이 생명을 바친 수많은 선교사님에 의해 교회와 학교 그리고 병원들이 세워지면서 가장 가난한 나라가 이제는 경제 대국 10위권에 있으면서, 수혜국에서 시혜국으로 돌아선 가장 모범적 사례가 되었다고 생각합니다. 베푸는 것이 복이요, 그것이 성장의 힘이 된다는 것을 증명한 나라가 되었습니다. 오늘 선교의 날을 작정하면서, 하나님이 하실 일을 믿고, 결단의 발걸음을 내딛기를 기대합니다. 축복의 유통자들이 되십시다. 선교의 주역들이 되십시다. 할렐루야!

Gospel entered Korea for the first time in 1885. Since then, to say that after 140-year expansion of gospel in Korea broke all missions’ historical records is probably not an exaggeration. Because of Huengsun Daewongun’s national isolation policy, Korea was an isolated country. In the midst of that, 36 years of Japanese occupation and Korean war made Korea a very poor country. Now we have become a country that sends most missionaries after U.S. Also, churches in Korea have grown enough to support all missionaries that are sent. More than half of the top 50 largest churches in the world are in Korea. We have accomplished many historical missions work. Nowadays, cars made in Korea occupy roads all over the world. Countless home appliances are made in Korea, making remarkable economic advancement. However, we shouldn’t overlook this kind of growth from fruits of sacrifice. The very first martyr in Korea, Robert Jermain Thomas arrived at Daedong river bank on an armed merchant ship General Sherman. The ship was hit by a bomb and run aground. Thomas along with those on board were brought to land and brutally beheaded by Korean soldiers. At that time, missionary Thomas was 27 years old. Before he was martyred, he handed a Bible to one of the soldiers and shouted to him to believe in Jesus. According to the record, he prayed his last prayer this way, “Oh God, he does not know what he is doing, please forgive him. May the gospel seed in Korea be not in vain. Please receive my spirit…”

The first missionary to land in Korea was Underwood on Easter of 1885. He prayed this way, “Lord, I cannot see anything right now. Only thing I see is stubbornly stained darkness. There are Koreans only bound by darkness, poverty and old habits… Although we are now being criticized as Western demons, we believe there will be a day when we will rejoice with tears as they realize that we are one in spirit and that we are one people and one child of the heavenly kingdom…”

Churches, schools and hospitals were built by countless missionaries who gave their lives. This poorest country has become one of the top ten economic nations. We have become an example of turning from being a country receiving benefits to a country giving benefits. We have become a country that witnesses to giving is blessing, that is the strength for growth. As we make commitment on this Missions Day, I hope you will take the step with belief that God will do the work. May you become the channel of blessings. Let’s take the leading role in missions work.
