봄이 오면서 여기저기 산과 들에 꽃이 만발합니다. 이렇게 아름다운 계절을 누리고자 산책이나 등산을 하다가 자칫 뱀에 물린다면 간단한 응급조치 후 병원에서 물린 뱀의 종류에 해당하는 해독제(antidote)를 처방받게 됩니다. 요즈음 한국에서는 각종 이단들을 고발하는 다큐멘터리가 얼마 전에 상영되면서 나라 전체에 큰 화제가 되고 있습니다. 이 영상에 대해 이야기하는 것을 듣고 있노라면 정말 이 다큐멘터리를 본 사람마다 뱀에 물린 것처럼, 그 영상을 본 사람과 교회에 많은 상처를 남긴다는 것을 느끼게 됩니다. 이단은 매우 악하기에 그 안에서 나오는 것은 악취가 납니다. 이단의 모든 면면을 이렇게 자세히 모두 알려주고 그들은 자신이 하나님이라고 하며, 하나님과 예수님의 이름을 팔아 사람을 미혹함으로 교회와 성도들에게 상처를 남기는 것이 어쩌면 당연하다는 생각도 하게 됩니다.

혹시 이런 뱀의 독에 물린 분들을 위해 해독제를 하나 처방해 드리고 싶습니다. 최근에 개봉한 Jesus Revolution(예수 혁명)이라는 영화입니다. 이 영화는 1960-70년대에 남부 캘리포니아에서 일어난 실화를 바탕으로 한 영화로, 당시 미국의 젊은이들이 “신은 죽었다.”라고 외치며 거리로 나와, 술과 마약에 찌들어 살던 시대를 그리고 있습니다. 그들 중 하나였던 그레고리 목사가 자신이 10대였던 그 당시, 갈보리 채플의 척 스미스 목사를 만나 혼란에 빠진 젊은이들에게 함께 복음을 전하며 그들이 변화해 가는 모습을 생생하게 보여주고 있습니다. 영화를 통해 본 미국은 제가 상상하기 어려울 정도로 어두운 현실을 보여주었습니다. 젊은이들에게는 소망이 없어 보이고 사회적으로도 핵전쟁의 위협과 결코 함께 가지 못할 것 같은 분열된 모습이 가득합니다. 하지만 척 스미스 목사님은 그 시대를 ‘절망’으로 보지 않고 하나님의 ‘마음’으로 바라보며, 뉴포트 비치의교양 있고 지식 있는 목회자의 모습에서 히피들을 위해 낮아지는 모습으로 그들에게 복음을 전하며 다가갔습니다. 당시 바닷가에서 기타를 치며 노래하는 히피들과 함께 찬양하기 위해 만들어진 사역이 Maranatha! Music이 되었고 이는 미국 전역의 젊은이들에게 찬양과 예배의 부흥을 일으켰으며, 갈보리 채플은 미국의 가장 영향력 있는 큰 교회로 성장하게 되었습니다.

영화의 한 대사가 기억납니다. 텐트를 치고 예배를 드리던 갈보리 채플을 가리키며 히피들이 “Our country is a dark and divided place. But in that tent, there’s hope and unity and miracles that I can’t even explain.(우리나라는 어둡고 분열되어 있지만, 저 텐트에는 희망과 하나됨 그리고 설명할 수 없는 기적이 있다.)” 세상은 이단을 고발하는 화살로 교회와 믿는 자들에게 상처를 주려고 합니다. 그러나 하나님의 역사는 지금도 교회를 통해 상처 난 부위를 해독하시고 His Story를 써 내려가심을 믿습니다. 이번 주에 가족 또는 믿음의 동료들과 함께 이 영화로 해독제 한번 맞으시길 처방드립니다.

Antidote

When spring comes, flowers bloom on mountains, fields, and everywhere. As you take a hike to enjoy the beauty of this season, let’s assume you were accidentally bitten by a snake. After a quick first aid, you would be rushed to an emergency hospital. There, you will receive a shot of antivenom(antidote) for the type of snake bite. With release of a documentary that identifies various cults in Korea, it is raising many issues all over the country. When you hear people talk about this, it is as if everyone who watched it has been bitten by a venomous snake, leaving many scars. Cults are evil. It’s obvious that nothing but foul smell would come out of them. As all aspects of inner happenings are revealed about these cults, calling themselves God and Jesus and using the name of our God and Jesus to entice people, no wonder churches and Christians are left with scars from them.

If you had been bitten by this venomous snake, I would like to prescribe an antidote. The antidote is a movie that is just released. It is called Jesus Revolution. This is a movie based on a true story that happened in southern California during 1960-1970. This was the time when young Americans came out to streets shouting “God is dead”. They lived recklessly, drinking and taking drugs. Among them was a young man, in his teens, named Greg Laurie. He meets Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel. Together, they evangelize to these young people living in confusion. This is a movie that vividly depicts transformation of these young people. Life of America in this movie was very dark and hard for me to imagine. There seemed to be no hope for these young people. The society was in danger of nuclear war, and problem of segregation with unreachable solution. Pastor Chuck Smith did not see “despair” of the time. Instead, he looked to “heart” of God. He humbly lowered himself and began preaching to the hippies in Newport Beach, not as an educated and knowledgeable pastor. The ministry that was created to sing praises along with guitar-playing hippies on the beach became Maranatha Music ministry. This ministry brought revival of praise and worship to young people all over the country. Calvary Chapel grew to become the biggest church in the U.S.

I remember a line from the movie. Pointing to the Calvary Chapel with hippies worshiping in a tent, it says, “Our country is a dark and divided place. But in that tent, there’s hope and unity and miracles that I can’t even explain.” World may want to hurt the churches and Christians by reporting about cults, but I believe God works even now to provide antidote through churches. He continues to write His Story. I prescribe this movie as antidote to our family and believers this week.
