이번에 호주에 방문하면서 느낀 첫인상을 한마디로 얘기하면, 깨끗한 공기입니다. 공해가 없는 청명한 공기, 습기도 없는 바삭함에 기분 좋게 호흡할 수 있는 것이 감사했습니다. 시드니 오페라 하우스가 있는 도심에 들어갔어도 매연 냄새가 없고, 바닷가에 부는 바람이 신선할 정도로 깨끗했습니다. 호주 국토가 미국만큼 큰 나라지만 그 인구가 대한민국 인구의 절반 뿐이 되지 않은 2천5백만이라는 것이 믿기지가 않았습니다. 호주에 거주하는 한인 인구는 약 15만 명 정도라고 합니다. 그 중 대부분이 시드니에 살고 있고, 그 외 멜본과 브리스번 같은 도시에 몰려 살고, 호주 대륙 남쪽에 떨어진 타스마니아섬, 호바트 도시에도 한인들이 약 500명 정도 거주하는데, 그곳에도 한인교회가 있습니다.

이러한 유쾌한 경험에도 한 가지 성가신 경험은 부쉬파리(Bush Flies) 였습니다. 파리 떼들이 시원한 공기를 들이마시며 산보하는 사람들에게 달려들기 시작하는 것이었습니다. 쓰레기장을 지나가는 것도 아니고, 파리가 좋아하는 음식을 들고 다니는 것도 아닌데, 어디서 날아오는 것인지, 걷는 사람들의 얼굴 주위를 맴돌며 기회만 되면 피부에 착륙을 시도하고, 순간적으로 사람의 땀과 눈물, 콧물을 통해 영양을 섭취한다고 합니다. 결국 온몸에 부쉬파리 백여 마리가 앉아 있어서, 실내로 들어가기 전에 옷을 한번 털어야 할 정도입니다. 호주의 광활함과 청명한 이미지와 도무지 어울리지 않는 부쉬파리 떼 현상입니다.

부쉬파리는 소똥에 알을 까고, 계속해서 부족한 영양을 보충하기 위해 암컷 파리들이 사람들이 나타나면 득달같이 날아와 사람의 수분을 통해서 영양공급을 한다고 합니다. 갑자기 달려든 부쉬파리를 경험하면서 저는 이렇게 영적으로 해석했습니다. 아무리 깨끗하고 근사한 척해도 파리들이 자기들의 친척을 만난 양 환영하는 모습은 우리 인간이 얼마나 더럽고 냄새나는 존재들인지 깨닫게 됩니다. 미국에서 처음으로 방문한 이 죄인도 파리 떼들이 즉각 알아보고 격하게 맞이하는 바람에 쉴 새 없이 손을 저으며 걸어 다녔습니다. 덕분에 운동 효과는 있었습니다. 빨리 걸어야 했고, 땀이 날 정도로 파리 떼를 쫓으며 걸었습니다.

말씀을 전하는 강사로 초대받아 갔지만, 파리 떼와 걸어 다녀야 하는 죄인임을 톡톡히 깨닫는 기간이었습니다. 이번 호주 시드니 집회를 섬기신 다섯 교회 목사님들과 컨퍼런스에 참여하기 위해 호주 뉴질랜드에서 목회하는 젊은 목사님들에게 진심으로 감사를 드립니다.

First Impression of Australia

As I visited Australia, my first impression, in one word, was clean air. I was thankful to be able to breathe a real clean air without any pollution or humidity. Even when I visited the downtown where Sydney Opera House is located, I did not see any smoke but only clean air that blew like the ocean. Geographically, Australia is nearly the same size as U.S., but it was hard to believe that the population is only about half as that of South Korea with some 25 million people. There are approximately 150,000 Koreans residing in Australia. Most Koreans live in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. And there are a small number of Koreans who live on the island located in Southern part of Australia called Tasmania, and in the city of Hobart, there are about 500 Koreans. And even on that small island, one can find a Korean church.

In the midst of these pleasant experiences, I was annoyed by one thing which involved “Bush Flies.” These flies would breathe the same clean air, and yet they would rush to swarm around people who are hiking. There was not any trash dumpsters, or any food items carried by the hikers. And yet, these flies would take every opportunity to attack people and land on the sweaty skin to take nutritional supplement from sweat, snot and other tear like substances. And when the whole body is covered with over 100 Bush flies, I had to shake off these flies from the clothing before going inside. This certainly is a phenomenon because such “Bush flies” would exist in Australia which is known for its vastness and clean image.

These Bush flies would lay eggs in cow dung, and for nutritional supplement, the female flies would attack humans to get nutrition supply through human sweat. As I experienced these Bush flies, I was able to interpret the event spiritually as follow: That no matter how clean and how cool you may appear, we are all greeted like relatives of these flies, which shows how dirty and smelly human existences are. And this sinner visiting from the U.S. is no different, that these flies would come after me violently. As I walked along, I could not help but to chase them away with my own hands without ceasing. Sure, it definitely gave me a work out because I had to walk fast and I sweated as I tried to chase these flies away.

I visited Australia as a special guest speaker, but I realize that I am a sinner walking along together with swarm of flies. Finally, I express my special thanks to the five churches in Sydney for making the event possible, and the young pastors who traveled from New Zealand to participate.
