사랑스러운 사람, 늘 명랑하고 친절한 사람, 주위 사람들에게 웃음과 따뜻함을 나누는 사람에게 우리는 ‘복 있는 사람’이라고 부릅니다. 가끔 사업체에 심방 하다가 복(福) 자를 뒤집어 붙여 놓은 것을 종종 봅니다. 복이 쏟아지는 이미지일 것입니다. 복 있는 사람은 복이 쏟아질 정도로 많이 받은 사람이라는 뜻입니다. 가정이 평안하고, 자녀들이 대학이나, 시집 장가도 잘 가면, ‘복 받았다’ 말합니다. 그런데, 성경에서 말하는 복은 ‘복 받았다’ 보다는 ‘복을 나누다’에 그 의미가 강조됩니다. 이 단어가 성경에서 제일 먼저 사용된 곳은 창세기 12장, 아브라함에 대한 이야기입니다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 “너희 고향과 친척과 아버지의 집을 떠나 내가 네게 보여 줄 땅으로 가라” 명하시면서 “내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고… 네 이름을 창대하게 하리니 너는 복이 될지라” (창 12:1-2, 개역 개정) 하셨습니다.

‘복이 될지라’는 ‘복을 많이 받은 사람이 될지라’가 아닙니다. ‘복을 많이 나누는 사람이 될지라’가 그 원래의 의미입니다. 복은 소유가 아니라 나눔에 그 근본 의미가 내재하여 있습니다. 복을 많이 나누려면 당연히 받은 복도 많아야 할 것입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 복을 많이 주시되 우리로 하여금 많이 나누게 하시기 위해서 복을 부어 주신다는 의미입니다. 복을 나누기 전까지는 복을 많이 받았어도 아직 복(blessing)은 아닙니다.

이전 개역한글 번역에는 “복의 근원이 될지라”였습니다. 물론 ‘복이 될지라’가 좀 더 원어 히브리어 성경에 가까운 번역입니다. 그러나 샘물이 그 근원에서 흘러나와 모든 사람들의 갈증을 해소하듯이, 복은 나누기 전까지는 복이 아니라는 복의 본질을 잘 표현했다고 믿습니다. 이런 복된 자의 삶을 우리는 어떻게 살 수 있을까요?

얼마 전 세계적인 면세점 체인 DFS의 공동창업자 척 피니(Chuck Feeney)가 2000년부터 하루에 백만 불씩 기부하면서 자신의 총자산 중 99%, 80억 불을 기부하고 세상을 떠났습니다. 그는 늘 “죽었을 때 기부하는 것보다 살아있는 동안 기부하는 것이 훨씬 더 재미있다”고 말했다고 합니다. 늘 기부하는 사람들에게 왜 기부하냐고 설문을 조사했는데, 그중 제일 많이 나온 답이 ‘나눌수록 행복이 배가 된다’는 것이었습니다. 이것이 하나님이 우리에게 복을 주시는 이유라 생각됩니다. ‘나누며 행복을 누려라’는 것입니다.

“복 있는 사람은… 오직 여호와의 율법을 즐거워하여 그 율법을 주야로 묵상하는 자로다” 시편 1편 기자는 말합니다. 하나님과의 관계가 정립된 자가 행복하고, 행복한 자가 그 행복을 나누게 됩니다. 많이 나눕시다. 하나님의 이름으로 더 많이 나눕시다. 소유하는 행복보다 더 큰 행복이 찾아올 것입니다.

Blessed is the One

We call people ‘blessed’ when they are loving, always cheerful and kind, and those who share laughter and warmth with others around them. When I visit businesses of our congregation, I often see the Chinese character for blessings(福) hung upside down. It’s supposed to show an image of blessing being poured out. To be called blessed means that the person pours out blessing from having received so much. We also call those who have peaceful homes, children going to good colleges and married well, ‘blessed’. However, meaning of blessed in the Bible stresses on ‘sharing the blessing’ rather than ‘receiving the blessing’. The word blessing was first used in the Bible in the story of Abraham in Genesis 12. The Lord commanded Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” and said “I will make you into a great nation… I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”(Gen 12:1-2)

‘You will be a blessing’ does not mean that he will ‘receive a lot of blessing’. The original meaning is that ‘he will share the blessing’. Blessing is not a possession. Its basic meaning stems from sharing. In order to share the blessing, you have to receive the blessing. In other words, God gives us lots of blessing so that we can share. We are the source of blessing to others. God gives us blessing, but it is not a blessing until it is shared.

In the older Korean translation, it was written “you will be a source of blessing.” ‘You will be a blessing’ is a closer translation to the original Hebrew Bible. However, like spring water flows from its source to quench the thirst of everyone, I believe that, until blessing can be shared, it is not a blessing. Then, how do we live a life of blessing?

A while ago, a co-founder of duty-free chain store DFS, Chuck Feeney passed away after having donated 8 billion dollars, 99% of his wealth. He began donating one million dollars a day starting in 2000. He has always said, “It’s a lot more fun to give while you are living than after you are dead”. A survey was conducted asking people who always donate on why. Greatest number of their answers was “The more you share, happiness doubles”. I think this is the reason that God blesses us. ‘Enjoy happiness while we share’.

“Blessed is the man … his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night” says the author of Psalm 1. Happy is the one who has established a relationship with God, and those that are happy are the ones who share their happiness. Let’s all share a lot. Let’s share a lot in the name of God. Greater happiness will come to you than happiness from possession.
