카타르 월드컵에 출전한 한국팀이 포르투갈과의 경기에서 후반 45분 종료 후, 추가시간 6분이 주어졌을 때, 역전 골을 넣어 승리했습니다. 그러나, 포르투갈을 이겼다고 16강 진출이 확정되는 것은 아니었습니다. 동시에 진행되고 있던 가나와 우루과이의 승부가 16강 진출의 열쇠를 쥐고 있었습니다. 가나가 이기면 한국은 포르투갈을 이겼다 해도 16강에 갈 수 없고, 만약 우루과이가 이기면 골 득실 차이로 16강행이 결정되는데, 우루과이가 3점 이상으로 이기면 한국은 가망이 없었습니다. 포르투갈과의 경기가 끝났을 때, 우루과이는 가나를 2:0으로 이기고 있었고, 추가시간은 8분이 남은 상태였습니다. 우루과이가 한 골을 더 넣으면 한국의 16강 진출은 좌절될 수밖에 없는 상황에서, 가나의 선방으로 한국은 극적으로 월드컵 16강에 진출했습니다.

저는 개인적으로 우리에게 주어진 추가시간 6분보다, 가나와 우루과이 경기의 추가 8분이 더 초조하고 긴장되었습니다. 잠시 기분 좋은 환호와 환성 속에 깨달은 것은 우리도 잘 싸워야 하지만, 우리의 운명을 결정짓는 것은 결국 우리 밖에서 일어난다는 사실이었습니다. 이것이야말로 우리의 구원(salvation)을 잘 설명해 주는 예라고 생각합니다.

빌립보서 2장에 “두렵고 떨림으로 너희 구원을 이루라” (12절)고 명하셨지만, “너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니” (13절)라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 우리가 두렵고 떨림으로 추가시간 6분 동안에 포르투갈을 이겼지만, 8분간의 가나-우루과이전의 결과를 기다려야 하듯, 하나님이 행하시는 일이 없으면 구원은 없다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

성도의 윤리는 이와 같습니다. 우리는 최선을 다해 선한 영향력을 위해서 진력해야 합니다. 6분이 남았더라도 최선을 다해야 합니다. 그러나, 8분의 은혜가 아니면 우리의 6분의 최선은 단지 수고로 남을 수밖에 없습니다. 은혜가 전제되어야 우리의 노력도 가치가 있는 승리가 될 것입니다. 8분의 은혜가 없으면 우리의 6분은 갈등과 분노, 후회와 우열의 판가름으로만 남을 뿐입니다. 은혜가 우선이면, 최선을 향한 우리의 노력은 감사와 함께 즐기는 기쁨이 될 것입니다. 이것이 이번 월드컵에서 제가 배운 신앙의 비밀입니다.

6 Minutes Effort and 8 Minutes Grace

In the World Cup Games in Qatar, Korea played against Portugal. They were given an additional 6 minutes to play after the second half. Korean team made a deciding goal to capture a victory. However, just because they defeated Portugal, the win did not guarantee a place among 16 teams advancing to the next round. Key to advancing was in the hands of Ghana and Uruguay game which was being played at the same time. If Ghana wins, Korea could not advance to the final 16 teams, even though Korea defeated Portugal. If Uruguay wins, with a goal difference, Korea could advance. However, if Uruguay wins with more than 3 points, then Korea would not have a chance to advance. When the game with Portugal was about to end, Uruguay was winning 2:0 with 8 additional minutes left to play. If Uruguay makes one more goal, Korea would have no chance of advancing. Ghana played well to keep the same score, and Korea advanced to 16 teams.

I was more nervous and tensed during the 8 additional minutes of Ghana and Uruguay game than Korea’s additional 6 minutes. I realized in this brief moment of exhilaration that we had to fight well. However, truth of the matter is that the deciding factors about our lives are often outside of our control. This illustrates the example of our salvation well.

In Philippians 2, we are commanded to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”(v.12) “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure”(v.13). Korea defeated Portugal from the additional 6 minutes of fear and trembling. As we had to wait additional 8 minutes for the result of Ghana-Uruguay’s game, we realize that there is no salvation without God’s work.

Ethics of Christians are similar. We must work hard and do our best to be a good influence. We must do our best even if we have 6 minutes left. But, without the 8 minutes of grace, our 6 minutes of effort remains only an effort. There must be God’s grace on our effort to reach victory. However, without 8 minutes of the grace, our 6 minutes of effort in fear and trembling will remain only as regret and judgment of superiority and inferiority. Therefore, if grace precedes, then our best efforts will become joy with thanks. This is the secret of faith I learned from the World Cup games.
