저는 대학교 때, Touring Choir(여행 합창단) 동아리에서 활동했습니다.  일주일간의 부활절 방학 동안, 미국 교회를 중심으로 공연하러 다니던 저희는 공연을 마치고 콘서트에 참여했던 교인들의 집으로 흩어져 민박했습니다. 다음 날 아침을 먹고 그분들이 저희를 다시 교회로 데려다주면, 다음 공연 장소로 이동하면서 그렇게 한 주간을 보냈던 추억이 있습니다. 한번은 오하이오 리마의 한 침례교회에서 공연하고, 교인 집에 갔는데, 초등학생으로 보이는 제프라는 아이가 저를 보자마자 눈을 째는 흉내를 내면서 놀리자, 당황하던 부모의 모습이 선합니다. 난생처음 미국인 집에서 자게 되었는데, 그때 침대 이불은 어떻게 덮고 자는 것인지 비로소 알게 되었습니다. 매트리스에 장착 시트(fitted sheet)를 덮고, 그 위에 톱 시트(top sheet)를 깔고, 마지막으로 계절에 맞는 얇은 담요를 덮습니다. 아직도 이해는 못 하지만 수많은(?) 베개를 얹어 놓았던 것도 생각이 납니다.

저는 기숙사에서 살 때도 완전 한국식으로 살았습니다. 침대에서 자면서 밍크 담요 한 장으로, 추우면 두 장으로 지냈습니다. 지금 생각해 보면, 당시 룸메이트가 속으로 꽤나 웃었을 것 같습니다. Touring Choir 다녀온 후, 저는 그 미국인 집에서 본 대로 정식으로 침대를 셋업 하기 시작했고, 시트와 시트 사이로 몸을 넣고 자는 습관이 들었습니다.

아~ 지금은 밍크 담요를 생각하면, 밤에는 덮고 자는 이불, 낮에는 고스톱 치는 방석, 저녁에는 늦은 귀가하는 아빠들을 위해 따뜻한 밥 식지 말라고 공깃밥을 파묻는 아내의 따스한 정성을 대변하는 물건이었습니다. 저 같은 이민자들에게는 한국에서 갓 이민 온 티를 내는 물건이기도 했습니다.

우리의 신앙생활에도 밍크 담요 같은 물건이 생기는 것 같습니다. 성경책 입니다. 그것도 빨간 칠이 되어 있는 성경책입니다. 또, 신약 성경에 시편만 추가한 휴대용 성경책입니다. 학교 다니면서 무거운 가방에 넣고 다니기 딱 좋은 성경책이었습니다. 요즘은 이런 성경책을 찾아볼 수가 없습니다. 책도 하드 카피보다는 e-book으로 읽는 시대, 이제는 성경책도 셀폰으로 찾아 읽는 시대가 되었습니다. 우리의 손때 묻은 정겨운 성경책은 이제는 찾아보기 힘듭니다. 너무 많이 봐서 해진 성경책은 아마, 박물관에 가야 볼 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다. 밍크 담요의 추억처럼 내 손에 익은 정겨운 성경책을 붙들고 말씀을 읽든지, 새로 나온 스마트폰으로 간편하게 열어서 말씀을 묵상하든지, 중요한 것은 ‘내 발의 등이요, 내 길에 빛’이 되는 하나님의 말씀을 삶의 이정표로 삼고 안내를 받는 것입니다. 주님과 동행하며 말씀과함께인도받는,따뜻한 밍크 담요 같은한 해가되길 기도합니다.

Artificial Mink Blanket

In college, I was actively involved in a Touring Choir(traveling choir group). For about a week during Easter break, we traveled to many different churches in the States. After each concert, we would be divided and placed in homestay at church member’s homes. Following day, after breakfast, we would be driven back to church and then travel to our next concert location. I have memories of spending weeks like this. One time, we performed at a Baptist church in Lima, Ohio. I went to a church member’s home for homestay. An elementary school boy named Jeff greeted me and started to imitate Asian eyes by slitting his eyes. I remember the stunned look on his parents. That was the first time I slept in an American home. This home was where I learned the proper way to use blanket on a bed. Mattress is covered with a fitted sheet and a top flat sheet. The bed is then topped with a blanket appropriate for weather. If I could add one more thing, there are many pillows placed on top of the bed. I still don’t understand why(?).

I lived in my dorm room completely in Korean style. I slept on my bed with just one artificial mink blanket; maybe, two blankets if it’s cold. Now that I think back, my roommate probably thought this was funny. After coming back from the Touring Choir, I set up my bed properly and began sleeping in between two sheets.

Ah~ when you think about mink blankets now, it used to serve as a blanket at night and as a mat to play a game of Go-Stop(Korean card game) during the day. In the evening, it served as a cover to keep a bowl of rice warm for dad who may be coming home late, showing the wife’s sincere warmth. For an immigrant like me, it was also an item that was a dead giveaway of being a newly arrived Korean.

We could also have something like the mink blanket in our life of faith. It is the Bible. It is the Bible with edges of pages stained in red. It could also be the compact Bible of New Testament with Psalms. This was a perfect size to carry in a heavy backpack. You cannot find those Bibles nowadays. We live in an era of e-books instead of hard copy books. We have Bible apps in our cell phones. It’s hard to find old Bibles that are worn out and stained by hands. Perhaps, well used tattered Bible can only be found in museum. Whether you read from a tattered Bible that is well-used by your hands or meditate on His Word from your smart phone, the important thing is for your life to be guided by God’s Word that is ‘lamp to my feet, light to my path’. I pray for coming year that you will walk with God and be guided by His Word like a warm mink blanket.
