스포츠에 별 관심이 없어도 슈퍼볼 선데이가 되면 명절 분위기를 느낄 수 있을 것입니다. 가족이 함께 모이는 추수감사절이나 성탄절과는 달리, 슈퍼볼 선데이는 ‘예배 후’ 친구들이 모여 함께 경기를 관람하곤 합니다. 지난주 슈퍼볼 선데이는 저의 고향 필라델피아 팀이 캔자스 시티 팀과 맞붙었던 날입니다. 아쉽게도 저의 고향팀이 지기는 했지만, 경기 결과와 상관없이 저는 슈퍼볼 선데이가 되면 기억나는 상처가 있습니다. 베델교회 담임목사 위임식 날, 당연히 온 가족이 와서 응원해 줘야 할 날이었습니다. 지금은 천국에 가신 아버님도 폐암 투병 중에도 오셔서 축하해 주셨는데 막상 저의 큰 아들은 오지 않았습니다. 풋볼을 워낙 좋아하는 아들은 아빠가 본인이 출석하는 교회의 담임목사가 아니라는 이유로 슈퍼볼 경기를 보기위해 집에 남아 있었던 것입니다. 위임식에 오지 않겠다고 말은 했지만, 설마 했었는데 말입니다.

슈퍼볼 관람의 묘미 중 하나는 선전입니다. 한국 기업으로는 기아 자동차가 참여했는데, 30초 선전비용이 7백만 불로 역대 최대였습니다. 30초라는 시간을 7백만 불에 샀다는 말인데 우리의 시간은 과연 얼마쯤 할까 묻고 싶어집니다. 꺼져가는 생명을 1년, 아니 한 달이라도 연장할 수 있다면, 돈이 얼마라도 아까워하지 않고 투자하기를 원하는 분도 있을 것입니다. 경기를 관람하면서 억대 연봉을 받고 필드에서 뛰고 있는 선수들, 그리고 사이사이 7백만 불짜리 선전을 하고 있는 기업들, 엄청난 중계료를 지불하고 아나운서 해설자를 세워 중계하는 방송사, 티켓 하나에 천 불 혹은 만 불이 넘는 돈을 지불하고 현장에서 경기를 관전하고 있는 사람들, 그리고 천문학적 액수의 돈을 쏟아 부어 화려하고 멋진 쇼를 연출하는 하프타임 쇼 등, 상상할 수 없는 거액의 돈으로 도배된 풋볼을 보는 나의 시간은 과연 얼마 짜리일까 싶었습니다. 어쩌면 이들은 모두 나의 시청 시간을 사기 위해 총력을 기울였다고 할 수 있습니다. 결국 시청률 없는 쇼는 가치가 없듯이, 저들은 우리의 시청 시간을 사기 위해 저렇게 많은 돈을 투자하는구나 라는 생각이 들었습니다.

하나님은 “세월을 아끼라 때가 악하니라”(엡 5:16) 말씀하십니다. “아끼라”는 내가 판 물건을 다시 돈 주고 사 오는 행위를 말합니다. 내가 풋볼 보는 한 시간을 아끼려면 우리는 얼마의 돈을 주고 다시 사 와야 할까요? 30초에 7백만 불로 계산하면 8억 4천만 불을 주어야 살 수 있습니다. 상상할 수 없는 액수지만, 그만큼 우리의 시간이 귀하다는 뜻입니다. 지난 세월을 아꼈더라면 좀 더 보람된 열매로 하나님 앞에 서 있을 것이라 믿습니다. 셀식구들과 함께 풋볼을 보면서 친구를 얻었다면, 혹은 가족들이 모여서 피자를 나누어 먹으며 막혔던 대화의 문을 열었다면, 돈으로 환산할 수 없는 가치의 카이로스의 시간을 샀을 것입니다. 오늘 한 시간의 예배가 8억 4천만 불 이상의 가치가 되길 기도합니다.

840 Million Dollar Worship

Even if you are not in to sports, you could feel the celebratory atmosphere on Super Bowl Sunday. We gather with our friends ‘after worship’ to watch the game, unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas when we gather with families. Last week’s Super Bowl game was with my hometown Philadelphia team against Kansa City team. Unfortunately, my hometown team lost. But regardless of the game, on Super Bowl Sundays, I am reminded of a painful memory. It was the day of my installation service to Bethel Church as senior pastor. It was a time when my whole family should have been there to encourage me. My father, who since went to heaven, came to congratulate me even when he was suffering with cancer. However, my oldest son did not come. His excuse was that he didn’t need to be there since I was not his senior pastor. Even though he said he wasn’t coming, I assumed he would come. My son did not come to my installation service. That day happened to be Super Bowl Sunday. My son stayed home, with the excuse that I was not his senior pastor, to watch the Super Bowl game.

One of the beauties of watching Super Bowl is their commercials. KIA participated among Korean companies. Cost of a 30-second commercial was 7 million dollars, the highest in history. KIA purchased 30 seconds for 7 million dollars. I would like to ask how much your time is worth. If some of us could extend life by a year or even a month with money, they would invest regardless of cost with no regrets. I wondered what my time would be worth as I watched the game with athletes running the field with multi-million-dollar salaries, corporations paying 7 million dollars for commercials, broadcasting companies paying incredible amount of money to broadcast with announcers and commentators, spectators paying $1000 to even $10,000 for the game ticket, and astronomical amount of money to put on the great halftime show, etc. In a way, you could say that they did everything they could to buy my viewing time. They invested huge amounts of money to gain our viewing time because a show is worth nothing without viewers.

God says, “making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil”(Eph 5:16). “Making the most of every opportunity” is the act of purchasing back what you have sold. If I want to make the most of one hour of watching football, how much do I have to pay to gain it back? If you calculate 7 million dollars per 30 seconds, you would have to pay 840 million dollars to buy one hour back. This is an unimaginable amount of money. This only goes to show just how valuable our time is. I believe we would stand, being more fruitful, before God, if we had made the best of our time. You may have gained invaluable time of Kairos if you gained friends while watching football game with your cell family, or communication opened up for your family while sharing a pizza. I pray that our one hour of worship today will be worth more than 840 million dollars.
