우리에게 익숙한 ‘데스밸리’는 그 이름만큼이나 가혹한 땅입니다. 연평균 강수량이 극히 적어 생명체가 살 수 없을 것 같은 이 황량한 광야는 절망과 불모지의 상징이 되었습니다. 하지만 이곳에는 수십 년에 한 번씩, 지켜보는 이들의 눈을 의심케 하는 경이로운 장관이 펼쳐집니다. 바로 ‘슈퍼 블룸’ 현상입니다. 기다림은 죽음이 아니라 준비입니다. 평소에는 먼지와 메마른 흙뿐인 이 계곡에 이례적인 폭우가 쏟아지면, 땅속 깊은 곳에서 수십 년간 숨죽여 기다리던 수조 개의 야생화 씨앗들이 일제히 기지개를 켭니다. 2016년 이후 10년 만인 올해 2026년 봄, 데스밸리는 다시 한번 형언할 수 없는 찬란한 꽃의 바다로 변모했습니다. 비가 오기 전까지 이 거친 벌판에서 꽃을 기대하는 사람은 어리석은 바보처럼 보일지 모릅니다. 그러나 씨앗들은 죽어 없어진 것이 아니었습니다. 그들은 뜨거운 지표면 아래에서 자신들을 깨울 ‘충만한 비’를 기다리며 생명을 보존하고 있었을 뿐입니다. 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다고 해서 존재하지 않는 것이 아니며, 멈춰 있다고 해서 끝난 것이 아님을 데스밸리의 꽃들은 온몸으로 증명합니다.

우리네 인생의 계절도 이와 다르지 않습니다. 때로는 기나긴 가뭄처럼 내 삶이 메마르고, 그 어떤 노력으로도 열매를 맺지 못할 것 같은 막막한 순간을 마주합니다. 그러나 기억하십시오. 우리에게 심겨진 ‘하나님의 말씀’이라는 씨앗은 결코 소멸되지 않습니다. 세상의 시선으로는 아무런 희망이 보이지 않는 황무지일지라도, 그 말씀은 우리 안에서 가장 적절한 때를 기다리며 생명력을 품고 있습니다. 최근 전해진 한 조종사의 소식은 우리에게 깊은 울림을 줍니다. 적진에서 피격되어 모든 소망이 끊어진 36시간의 사투 속에서, 그가 구조대를 향해 보낸 마지막 신호는 ‘하나님은 선하시다’였습니다. 그는 상황을 보지 않고 상황을 다스리시는 하나님을 바라보았습니다. 절망의 한복판에서 터져 나온 이 고백이야말로 메마른 광야를 슈퍼 블룸으로 뒤바꾸는 영적 ‘변곡점’이 됩니다.

The Super Bloom

“Death Valley,” a name familiar to many, is a land as harsh as its name suggests. This desolate wilderness- where the average annual precipitation is so scant that it seems no life could possibly survive- has become a symbol of despair and barrenness. However, once every few decades, a wondrous spectacle unfolds here that makes onlookers doubt their own eyes: the phenomenon known as the ‘Super Bloom.’ Waiting is not death; it is preparation. Usually filled with nothing but dust and parched earth, when this valley is drenched by extraordinary heavy rains, trillions of wildflower seeds that have been waiting breathlessly deep underground for decades stretch and awaken all at once. In the spring of 2026—ten years after the bloom of 2016—Death Valley has once again transformed into an inexpressibly brilliant sea of flowers. Until the rain falls, someone expecting flowers in this harsh field might look like a fool. Yet the seeds had not died or disappeared. They were simply preserving their life beneath the scorching surface, waiting for the ‘abundant rain’ that would wake them. The flowers of Death Valley prove with their entire being that just because something is invisible to our eyes does not mean it doesn’t exist, and just because something has paused does not mean it is over.

The seasons of our lives are no different. Sometimes, our lives feel parched like a long drought, and we face bleak moments where it feels like no amount of effort will bear fruit. But remember: the seed of the ‘Word of God’ planted within us never perishes. Even if it looks like a wasteland with no hope in the eyes of the world, that Word holds its life force within us, waiting for the most appropriate time. A recent story about a pilot resonates deeply. During a 36-hour struggle for survival after being shot down in enemy territory—where all hope seemed lost—the final signal he sent to the rescue team was “God is Good.” He did not look at the circumstances; he looked to God who rules over them. This confession, bursting forth from the middle of despair, becomes the spiritual ‘inflection point’ that transforms a parched wilderness into a Super Bloom.

Faith is the power that turns the unseen into reality. As it says in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen,” faith is the act of seeing the rain before it arrives and blessing the seeds beneath the earth. Even if your life feels as desolate as Death Valley right now, do not lose heart. On the day the sweet rain of grace falls, the seed of the Word hidden within you will surely bloom into a brilliant flower.
