벤처기업 투자자 클라이너 퍼킨스가 이런 말을 했다고 합니다. “사명자가 전문가를 이긴다” 챗GPT AI의 창시자, 샘 올트만이 Meta가 공격적으로 자사의 AI연구원을 영입해 가자, 이 말을 인용하여 자사 방어에 나서면서 유명한 어귀가 되었습니다.

세상은 능력 있고 계산이 빠른 사람을 높이 평가합니다. 더 많은 이익을 얻고, 더 좋은 조건을 찾아 움직이는 사람들을 성공한 사람이라고 합니다. 그러나 시간이 지나면 사람들의 마음을 움직이고 역사를 바꾸는 사람은 돈을 받고 돈의 가치 만큼 일하는 ‘용병’과 같은 전문가가 아니라, 선교사처럼 돈의 대가가 없어도 부르신 이의 사명 때문에 자원봉사 하는 사명자들입니다. 용병은 보상이 충분할 때만 남아있지만, 사명자는 어려움과 손해가 와도 자신의 자리를 지킵니다. 돈 받은 만큼만 일하는 자가 용병입니다. 그러나 일하는 목적과 소명이 9-to-5 시간을 뛰어 넘는다면, 사명자입니다.

사명이 있는 사람은 쉽게 포기하지 않습니다. 실패와 비난, 고난이 와도 자신이 왜 이 일을 하는지 알기 때문입니다. 반면 자신의 유익만 좇는 사람은 상황이 불리해지면 곧 방향을 바꿉니다. 그래서 진정한 변화는 언제나 사명을 가진 사람들을 통해 일어납니다. 교사와 부모, 목회자와 선교사, 그리고 세상을 바꾸는 많은 리더들은 단지 성공을 위해 살지 않습니다. 그들은 자신보다 더 큰 가치를 붙들고 사는 자들입니다. 주님의 몸된 교회는 용병이 아니라, 사명자가 더 필요합니다. 목회자들은 비록 교회에서 사례를 받고 있지만, 근본적으로 사명자들입니다. 월급 많이 받는 전문가가 교회를 이끄는 것이 아니라, 부름 받은 사명자들이 교회를 이끌고 간다고 해도 결코 틀리지 않습니다. 자신의 것을 계산하고 챙기는 자들이 아니라, 교회 일이라면 낮에도 사람을 써서 자기자리를 맡기고 교회로 달려오는 자들입니다.

예수님은 가장 위대한 사명자의 모델입니다. 예수님은 권력과 대접을 받기 위해 오신 것이 아니라, 잃어버린 영혼을 구원하기 위해 오셨습니다. 예수님은 사람들을 이용하지 않으셨고, 오히려 자신을 내어 주셨습니다. 십자가는 그 사명의 절정이었습니다. 오늘 우리도 무엇을 얼마나 얻을 것인가보다, 왜 살아야 하는가를 먼저 물어야 합니다. 결국 오래 남는 삶은 많이 가진 삶이 아니라, 의미 있는 목적에 자신을 드린 삶입니다.

Missionaries Win over Mercenaries

It is said that venture capitalist Kleiner Perkins once said, “Missionaries win over mercenaries.” This phrase became famous when Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT AI, quoted it in self-defense after Meta aggressively recruited AI researchers from his own company.

The world highly values people who are capable and quick at making calculations. Those who move in pursuit of greater profits and better conditions are called successful. However, over time, the people who move hearts and change history are not “mercenaries”—experts who work solely for money and only to the value of that money—but “missionaries” who volunteer out of a sense of calling, even without financial reward. Mercenaries only stay when the compensation is sufficient, but missionaries guard their posts even when faced with hardship and loss. A person who works only as much as they are paid is a mercenary. However, if the purpose and destiny of your work transcend a 9-to-5 schedule, you are a missionary.

People with a mission do not give up easily. Even when failure, criticism, and hardship come, they know exactly why they are doing this work. On the other hand, those who only chase their own self-interest quickly change direction when circumstances become unfavorable. That is why true change always happens through people with a mission. Teachers, parents, pastors, missionaries, and many leaders who change the world do not live merely for success. They are individuals who hold onto a value greater than themselves.

The Church, which is the body of Christ, needs missionaries, not mercenaries. Although pastors receive an honorarium from the church, fundamentally they are people with a mission. It is not an understatement to say that the church is led not by highly paid experts, but by called missionaries. They are not those who calculate and look after their own interests, but those who will hire someone else to cover their own work just so they can run to the church when there is church work to be done.

Jesus is the ultimate model of a missionary. Jesus did not come to receive power and hospitality; He came to save lost souls. Jesus did not use people; instead, He gave Himself up. The cross was the pinnacle of that mission. Today, rather than asking what or how much we can gain, we must first ask why we must live. In the end, a long-lasting life is not a life of having a lot, but a life offered to a meaningful purpose.
