영어로 ‘done done’이라고 하면 완전히 끝냈다는 뜻처럼 들립니다. 그냥 대충 마친 것이 아니라, 정말 다 해냈고 완수했다는 느낌이 있습니다. 그런데 한국어로 비슷하게 들리는 ‘똔똔’은 전혀 다른 의미를 가집니다. 똔똔은 일본어 トントン에서 온 말로, 금전적으로 득실이 없고 본전이라는 뜻으로 쓰입니다. 남은 것도 없고 잃은 것도 없는 상태, 결국 계산해 보니 제자리였다는 말입니다.

우리의 삶도 자주 이 똔똔처럼 느껴집니다. 새벽부터 밤까지 일했는데 통장 잔고는 늘 제자리이고, 자녀를 다 키워 출가시키고 났더니 손에 남은 것은 빈 둥지와 늙은 몸뿐인 것 같습니다. 수고는 수고대로 했는데 본전 같고, 사랑은 사랑대로 쏟았는데 돌아오는 것은 별로 없는 것 같습니다. 정말 내 인생은 남는 게 없는 똔똔일까요? 해 아래에서 수고하는 모든 수고가 도대체 무슨 유익이 있느냐고 묻던 전도자의 오래된 탄식이 우리에게도 있습니다.

사람은 자꾸 삶을 계산하려 합니다. 내가 들인 시간, 내가 받은 상처, 내가 얻은 인정, 내가 잃은 기회들을 저울에 올려놓습니다. 그리고 그 계산 끝에서 ‘남는 게 없다.’고 결론 내립니다. 그러나 믿음의 삶은 사람의 계산으로만 판단할 수 없습니다. 내가 보기에는 똔똔이어도, 하나님 앞에서는 결코 헛되지 않을 수 있습니다. 하나님께 드려진 시간은 사라지지 않습니다. 하나님께 맡겨진 눈물은 낭비되지 않습니다. 하나님 안에서 행한 순종과 사랑은 당장 결과가 보이지 않아도 하나님께서 받으시고 사용하십니다. 우리는 무엇을 남기려고 애쓰다가 지치지만, 하나님은 우리가 다 알지 못하는 방식으로 남기십니다. 예수님은 십자가 위에서 아무것도 없는 것 같은 순간에 “다 이루었다”(요19:30)라고 하셨습니다. 영어로 옮기면 “It is finished.”, 곧 ‘done’이란 의미입니다. 아무것도 남지 않은 듯 보이던 그 자리가, 사실은 온 인류에게 가장 크게 남기신 자리였습니다. 그러므로 중요한 것은 내가 억지로 남기는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 남기시게 하는 것입니다. 내가 완수했다고 증명하려 하기보다, 하나님이 하시도록 맡기는 것입니다. 하나님이 “됐다.”고 하시면 그것은 된 것입니다. 하나님이 끝내시면 그것은 ‘똔똔’이 아니라, 진정한 의미의 done done입니다.

내 눈에는 똔똔처럼 보여도, 하나님이 하시면 그것이 남는 것입니다. 내가 남기려 하지 말고 하나님이 남기시게 해야 합니다. 하나님이 하시면 똔똔도 은혜가 되고, done done은 완성이 됩니다. 우리의 몫은 그저 하나님이 완수하시고 남기시도록 내어 드리는 것입니다.

In English, when we say, ‘done done’, it sounds like something having been completely finished. Not merely wrapped up or somewhat completed, but truly accomplished; everything has been done. But in Korean, a similar-sounding expression, ‘ttonton'(똔똔), has an entirely different meaning. The word comes from the Japanese トントン and is used to describe a situation in which there is neither gain nor loss, but you simply break even. Nothing is left, and nothing has been lost. And after it is all calculated, you find yourself exactly where you started.

Our lives often feel like this ttonton. We work from early morning until late at night, yet our bank account remains exactly the same. We raise our children and eventually send them off into the world, only to be left with an empty nest and an aging body. We have worked hard, yet it all feels as though we have merely broken even. We have poured out love, yet it seems that very little has returned to us. Could it be that my life is really a ttonton life? A life in which nothing remains? We can hear ourselves ask the same ancient lament in Ecclesiastes, “What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?”

People are constantly trying to calculate life. We place on the scales the time we have invested, the wounds we carry, the recognition we have received, and the opportunities we have lost. And at the end of all our calculations, we conclude, “Nothing remains.” But a life of faith cannot be measured merely by human calculations. What looks like ttonton to us is not meaningless at all before God. Time given to God never disappears. Tears entrusted to God are never wasted. Obedience and love offered in God may not produce immediate visible results, but God receives them and uses them. We become exhausted attempting to leave something behind, but God leaves behind a legacy in ways we cannot always see or understand. Jesus, at the very moment when all appeared that nothing remained, said from the cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30). In other words, “done”. Yet the place that appeared to be the moment when everything had been lost was, in fact, the place where the greatest gift in all of human history was accomplished. Therefore, what matters is not forcing ourselves to leave something behind. What matters is trusting God to be the One Who leaves something behind. Rather than trying to prove that we have accomplished everything, we entrust ourselves to God and allow Him to work. When God says, “It is done,” then it is truly done. When God brings something to completion, it is not ttonton(merely breaking even). It is, in the truest sense, done done.

Even if it looks like ttonton to my own eyes, when God is at work, something remains. When we yield to God, even ttonton becomes grace, and “done done” becomes perfect completion. Our part is simply to offer ourselves to Him, trusting Him to accomplish His work and to leave behind the perfect outcome.
