영국 신문 가디언에 한국말이 등장했습니다. ‘마기꾼(Magikkun)’이라는 말이 한국에서 유행한다며 소개하는 기사였습니다. ‘마스크+사기꾼’을 줄인 말로, 마스크로 얼굴을 가려 원래 모습보다 더 멋지게 보이는 사람을 ‘마기꾼’이라고 부른다는 것입니다. 코로나 이후 마스크에 대한 이미지가 확실히 바뀐 것은 사실입니다. 코로나 이전에는 마스크를 쓴 사람은 몸이 아픈 사람, 혹은 뭔가 가리려고 하는 의심스러운 사람이라는 이미지였다면, 지금은 건강에 신경 쓰는 사람, 접근해도 괜찮은 사람이라는 긍정적인 이미지로 바뀐 것입니다. 여성들은 마스크 때문에 화장을 안 해서 좋다고도 했지만, 이제는 마스크 자체의 디자인도 다양해져서 단순히 의료용이나 미세 먼지용이 아니라, 패션의 일부로 자리매김하는 추세입니다.

대부분의 사람은 얼굴을 가리면 자신감이 생긴다고 합니다. 자기 얼굴에 100% 자신 있는 사람은 한 사람도 없다고 하니 설득력이 있습니다. 코로나는 마스크를 우리의 결함을 가려주는 합법적인 도구로 등장하게 했습니다. 이제는 마스크를 써도 누구 하나 벗으라고 하는 사람이 없습니다. 거기에 선글라스까지 쓰면 완벽한 얼굴 봉쇄입니다. 교회에 와서 서로 인사는 하는데, 누군지 알아볼 방법이 없습니다.

창문에 비친 그림자, 실루엣의 신비도 있습니다. 얼굴에 난 여드름, 주근깨, 뾰루지가 보이지 않습니다. 그래서 맑은 피부의 얼굴을 상상하며, 가려진 그림자 너머 멋진 상상을 하게 되나 봅니다. 상상은 자유이지만 마스크를 일상생활 중에 착용하다 보니 마스크 뒤에 감추려는 우리의 죄도 미화하는 습관이 있지 않을까 우려됩니다.

아담과 하와를 그린 라파엘의 작품을 보면 가리는 것이 거의 없습니다. 그러나 죄가 세상에 들어온 후, 죄로 인한 수치를 가리기 시작했다고 할 수 있습니다. 있는 그대로의 모습은 안타깝기 그지없었기 때문입니다. 무화과나무 잎으로 가리기 시작했지만, 죄의 흔적을 덮기에는 터무니없이 부족했습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 가죽옷을 지어 입히시며 죄의 수치를 가리기 시작했습니다. 즉, 피를 내어 죽인 동물의 가죽으로 인간의 주홍 같은 죄를 가리기 시작하는 십자가의 그림자를 보게 하십니다.

예수님의 대속의 은혜를 입으면 그때부터 나를 감추는 ‘마기꾼’을 얼굴에 쓸 이유가 없어집니다. 지금의 나 자신보다 좋은 모습인 척하면서 남에게 보일 이유가 사라지기 때문입니다. 이제는 위드 코로나 시대가 된 것 같습니다. 유럽의 많은 국가들이 벌써 마스크를 벗고 다닙니다. 우리도 이제 마스크를 벗고, 무엇보다도 ‘마기꾼’은 반드시 벗어 버리고, 주님이 가려 주신 은혜만으로도 충분한 멋진 미소를 띠며 다닐 날이 있을 것을 믿습니다.

A Korean word appeared in a British Newspaper, The Guardian. It was an article that introduced a word ‘Magikkun’ which has become popular in Korea. It’s a shortened word that combines ‘mask(masuku) and fraud(sagikkun)’. This word ‘magikkun’ refers to people who look more attractive than they actually are when masks cover their faces. With Corona virus, it is true that our image of mask has changed. Prior to Corona virus, people wearing masks were either sick or suspicious people who were trying to hide from something. Now the image has changed to a person who is concerned about health and is fine to approach. Women say that they are glad that they don’t have to wear make-up with mask. There are many different mask designs. They are no longer simply used for medical reasons or pollution. There are many pretty mask designs.

Most people say that they feel confident when their faces are covered. This is convincing since no one is 100% confident about their appearance. Corona virus has made the mask a legitimate tool to hide our faults. Nowadays no one is asked to take off their masks. When you put on sunglasses on top of that, your face is completely covered. When we greet each other at church, sometimes it’s hard to recognize anyone.

There is also mystic view about reflected shadow, silhouette on windows. Pimples and freckles on faces are not visible in shadow. We imagine our faces clear skin and imagine own attractiveness looking at the shadow. You are of course free to imagine. But wearing masks, hiding behind masks, makes me wonder, perhaps, we have a habit of hiding our sins.

There isn’t much to hide in Rafael’s painting of Adam and Ever. However, since sin came into the world, we began hiding shamefulness of sin. That’s because it’s sad to see us as we are. They tried to hide with fig leaves. But absurdly, it was not enough to hide the evidence of sin. God made clothes for them out of leather to hide shamefulness of sin. God makes us see a shadow of the cross that hides our crimson red sins in the blood of the animal that was killed for its leather.

When you are clothed with grace of Jesus’ sacrifice, we no longer need to wear ‘Magikkum’ to hide our face. That’s because the reason to pretend to be someone else disappears. Now it has become a season of living with Corona virus. They are not wearing masks in many of Europeans countries. I believe there will come a day when we can take off our masks, definitely take off ‘Magikkun’, and show our wonderful smiles because we are sufficiently hidden by grace of God.
