Natural Beauty and Artificial Beauty

Rev. Bryan Kim

I went to visit a friend in Jeju Island when I was a student. I went because my friend’s home was in Jeju Island. It felt like a long trip. After arriving in Jeju Island by ship, it took a while to get to the countryside. His home was in a small village in countryside. I remember being confused and unable to understand what was being said when my friend and his parents talked to each other in Jeju dialect. For almost all of my school age, I lived in Seoul. Jeju Island was just as natural as one could imagine. I remember how my heart felt relieved from being stifled when I came back to Seoul and seeing the forest of tall buildings after the interesting experience in Jeju Island’s countryside. I felt I enjoy being in city more than countryside.

If I were to tell the difference of going to Korea after visiting Kyrgyzstan, it is the difference between natural beauty and artificial beauty. Kyrgyzstan was natural beauty, as people said. Even in the middle of a city, you could see snowcapped mountains in the distance. When walking through mountain trails, there were horses and cows grazing along the path. I had to be careful not to step on horse and cow manure. We drove through unpaved roads for a while to arrive at our lodging. It was a native Ger type of lodging in the middle of a mountain. After spending a week there, when I arrived in Seoul Korea was, in a word, a forest of concrete apartments. To accommodate a large population in a small land, they had to stack homes on top of each other. Most of the churches I visited had basements below and many floors above. I think Korea has mastered maximization of usable space on a small plot of land.

While in Korea, I met with some of my pastor friends that I rarely saw in the States. We are in our 60’s now. Rather than sharing the ambition for ministry like “Lord, give me this land” when we were young, we were more like ordinary grandfathers proudly sharing pictures of their grandchildren. If we were dreaming and developing plans to pursue artificial beauty when we were young, after having lived in well-built apartments, we are now in a season when we desire to return to countryside and seek more of the natural beauty.

Meditating on Jacob’s life in Genesis in our morning QT, I wondered if transforming a life is like that of Jacob. Jacob changed and turned over the handle of his life, the life that was previously made according to his own desire and plan, to God and conformed to Him as he wrestled Him at the ford of Jabbok. I would like to think that more mature life of realizing the natural beauty, rather than artificial beauty, awaits us.
