행정목사가 하는 일 중의 하나는 매주 베델뉴스지를 마감하는 일입니다. 각 부서와 팀으로부터 계획된 행사에 대한 광고를 수집하고 서식과 규격, 분량에 맞게 다시 수정하여 디자이너에게 넘깁니다. 주일 설교의 본문과 찬양곡, 대표기도 순서, 셀 모임 나눔교재 등을 수집해서 디자이너에게 보내고 편집합니다. 모든 기사와 원고의 최종 편집은 금요일 오후에 이뤄지는데, 베델뉴스 팀장과 담당 목사, 디자이너, 그리고 행정목사가 한자리에 모여 최종 교정 작업을 합니다. 이때는 정말 중요한 시간인데, 초고도의 집중력을 가지고 오류를 잡아내지 않으면 주보는 수정되지 않은 채 그냥 나가게 됩니다.

늘 교정 작업을 하면서 겪는 사실은 틀리는 사람은 늘 일관성 있게 틀린다는 것입니다. 광고와 글을 주셔야 하는 분들에게 공지를 드려도 베델뉴스지의 양식에 맞추지 않고, 늘 비슷한 패턴으로 틀리게 글을 보내온다는 것입니다. 늘 반복되는 교정일에 피곤과 원망이 몰려오곤 합니다. 하지만 성도님들이 보시는 베델뉴스지를 완벽하게 내보내야 하기에 여러 명이 중복으로 교정을 봅니다. 8면 광고의 경우, 디자이너가 편집하면서 한번 보고, 행정목사가 교정을 하고, 혹시나 보지 못한 오류가 없는가 하여 제 삼자가 다시 한번 교정을 합니다. 이렇게 하는 이유는 처음 교정자가 보지 못하고 넘어간 오류는 아무리 여러 번 읽어도 잘 발견하지 못하기 때문입니다. 그래서 여러 명이 여러 번 교정을 합니다. 놀라운 사실은 그렇게 해도 오탈자가 발견되고 어색한 문구들이 계속 발견된다는 것입니다. 심지어는 출력 후에 발견되는 오류들도 있다는 것입니다.

매번 베델뉴스 교정을 하면서 깨닫는 것은, 타인은 보는 오류를 나는 못 본다는 것입니다. 내가 보지 못하고 넘어간 오류는 다시 보아도 발견하기 힘들다는 것입니다. 예수님의 말씀이 생각납니다. “어찌하여 형제의 눈 속에 있는 티는 보고 네 눈 속에 있는 들보는 깨닫지 못하느냐”(마 7:3) 인간은 자신의 오류와 결점을 보지 못하는 죄인이라는 사실을 이 교정작업을 통해서 다시 한번 깨닫습니다. 사람이 얼마나 자기 자신을 제대로 보지 못하고 얼마나 눈이 가려져 있는지, 아무리 자신을 돌아보아도 안 보이는 것은 끝까지 안 보인다는 것입니다. 내가 못 본 것을 타인은 쉽게 보는 것을 보면서 내가 바뀌려면 타인이 나를 객관적으로 바라봐 줘야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 자신을 올바르게 볼 수 있는 방법은 성경이 나를 뭐라 말씀하시는지 자세히 보는 것입니다. 주님이 나를 바라봐 주셔야 합니다. 그리고 주님의 공동체가 나를 뭐라 말하는지 보는 것입니다. 죄인인 내가 어떻게 온전해질 수 있습니까? 말씀과 공동체를 통하여 온전케 됩니다.

Learning from Editing Bethel Newsletter

As an administrative pastor, one of the things I do is publishing the Bethel Newsletter. I gather announcements of scheduled events from each department. After editing the announcements for format, size, and content, I turn them over to the designer. I gather, edit, and send sermon passage, praise songs, representative prayer, and cell share notes to the designer. Final editing of all articles takes place Friday afternoon. Bethel Newsletter team leader, ministry assigned pastor, designer, and administrative pastor come together for the final editing. This important review time requires absolute focus. Unless mistakes are caught and fixed, it will be sent out uncorrected.

What I learned from constant editing work is that those that make mistakes, make the same mistakes consistently. Even though we notify with guidelines to those who are writing announcements, they don’t often follow Bethel Newsletter format. Mistakes are always made in similar pattern. Sometimes I get tired, and resentment grows from repeated editing. Since Bethel Newsletter must be made perfect for our congregation, multiple people perform duplicate reviews and editing. For instance, with the announcement on page 8, the designer edits first while creating the page, then administrative pastor edits. To be sure that there aren’t any mistakes, a third person reviews and edits. The reason for this is that if an error is missed by the first editor, it’s difficult to find that missed error no matter how many times the first editor reviews it. This is the reason for multiple reviews by multiple editors. What’s surprising is that even with this system, we still discover errors and incorrect sentence structures. Even after the publication, we discover errors.

What I find every time I edit Bethel Newsletter is that I do not see the errors that others see. Even if I were to review it again, it is difficult to find the error that I missed the first time around. I am reminded of what Jesus said. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”(Matt 7:3) Another thing I have realized while editing newsletter is that men are sinners that cannot see their own errors and flaws. We are so blinded that we cannot see ourselves. No matter how hard we try, we can never see what we do not see. What I cannot see, others see so easily. Learning this, I realized that, in order for me to change, I need others to see me objectively. The way I can see myself correctly is to find what Bible says about me. God must see me. I need to learn what God’s community says about me. How can a sinner like me become whole? We are made whole through the Word and community.
