카타르 월드컵 축구에서 “가장 있을 법하지 않은 이야기를 완성한 모로코의 자랑스러운 싸움이 끝났다.”는 말이 생겨났습니다. 2002년 한국의 4강 신화에 이어, 모로코는 월드컵 축구 역사에 또 하나의 신화를 남겼다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. 국제 축구연맹 2위인 벨기에를 이기고 16강에 오르더니, 스페인과 포르투갈을 차례로 제압하며 4강에 오른 것입니다. 특히 스페인과 포르투갈은 제국주의 시대에 모로코를 침략한 식민 지배국이었습니다. 또한 4강 대결팀인 프랑스는 이전 월드컵 우승팀이면서 1956년 모로코가 독립국 지위를 되찾기 직전 식민 통치를 했던 나라이기도 합니다. 나라와 민족의 한을 푸는 경기를 하는 선수들은 이제는 더 이상 모로코의 국가대표(국대)가 아니라, 유럽의 지배 속에 아픈 상처가 있는 아프리카를 대표(아프대)하는 선수들이었습니다. 아프리카 대륙의 모든 나라들이 응원하기 시작했고, 미국에 흩어져 있는 모든 아프리카계 이민자들도 거리로 뛰쳐나와 응원하기 시작했습니다. 이민자의 설움을 안고 살아가던 이들은, 모로코의 거침없는 질주를 응원하며 대리 만족이라도 하듯 모로코의 4강 신화에 열광했습니다.

한 가지 주목할 것은 모로코 선수 중 무려 14명이 귀화 선수라는 것입니다. 즉, 이중 국적자들입니다. 나라를 잃었던 뼈아픈 과거의 결과로 많은 국민들이 해외로 나가 그 나라 시민이 되었는데, 그들의 후손들이 자기 모국에 돌아와 모국의 국기를 가슴에 달고 뛰었다는 사실입니다.

저는 오늘 베델교회에 임직 하는 분들과 모로코의 월드컵 축구팀의 공통점을 발견합니다. 출전 선수들이 자기 나라 모로코를 대표하는 국가대표이듯, 베델교회에서 세움을 받는 사역장로, 안수집사, 사역 권사들은 베델의 대표선수로 발탁된 분들이라 할 수 있습니다. 그러나, 모로코 선수들이 ‘국대’에 머물지 않고 아프리카 대륙을 대표하는 선수들로 경기에 임했듯이, 베델의 대표 선수들은 이제부터 그리스도를 대표(그대)하는 선수들로 뛰어야 한다는 사실입니다. 이것은 엄청난 영적 진리를 내포하고 있습니다. 교회의 임직자들은 사람의 대표가 아니라, 그리스도를 대신하는 손과 발로 그리스도를 대표합니다. 교인 대표가 아니라, 그리스도 대표 주자들입니다. 세상과 교회가 다른 점이 있다면 이것입니다. 세상은 뽑아준 사람들을 대표하지만, 교회는 그리스도를 대표합니다. 그래서 ‘그대’들을 뽑을 때는 세속적인 네거티브 정치가 배제되어야 하며, 표몰이 등을 선동하면 안 되는 것입니다. 우리는 앞으로도 베델의 임직자들을 그리스도의 대표 주자들로 세워갈 것입니다. 이것이 우리가 임직자들에 대해 거는 기대입니다. 넓은 길을 가는 사람의 마음을 대표하기보다는 좁은 길을 가는 그리스도의 마음을 대표하기를 기대합니다. 이 땅의 시민이지만, 동시에 천국 시민인 이중국적자로써 세상에 부화뇌동하지 않고, 그리스도라는 반석에 기초를 두고 하나님 나라를 꿈꾸는 ‘그대’들을 기대합니다.

New Lay Leaders, We Look Forward to ‘His Representation’

One thing much talked about in Qatar World Cup is that, “the most unexpected Morocco’s proud fight has ended”. Next to Korea’s legacy of moving into quarter-finals in 2002, many notes that Morocco leaves another legacy in the history of soccer game. They defeated Belgium, who is ranked 2nd in the International Soccer Federation, and moved onto the final 16 teams. Then they moved onto semi-finals after defeating Spain and Portugal respectively. During their imperialism period, both Spain and Portugal have attacked and colonized Morocco. Semi-final’s opposing team, France, is the previous World Cup winner, and country that also colonized them before Morocco regained independence in 1956. These Morocco players fought for their painful past. They fought, not just for their nation, but as athletes representing the whole Africa that has suffered under Europe’s domination The continent of Africa cheered for them. African immigrants in America came out to streets to cheer for them. Those with sorrows of hard immigrant life cheered for Morocco’s unstoppable run. They all went crazy as the team moved onto semi-finals.

One thing to focus on is that 14 of the Moroccan players joined from other countries to become national players. Another words, they have dual citizenships with roots in Morocco. Painful history of losing their country caused many people to flee to other countries long time ago, and become citizens of those countries. Their younger generation returned with heart for the motherland to represent.

Similarity can be found between our Bethel Church’s newly elected lay leaders and Morocco team at World Cup. Like those athletes representing their country of Morocco, newly elected elders, ordained deacons, and deaconesses are the players that represent Bethel Church. However, Moroccan athletes did not only represent their nation, but were the athletes that represent the whole African continent. Our Bethel players must compete representing Christ. This is an incredible spiritual truth. Church lay leaders do not represent people, but represent Christ as His hand and feet. They don’t represent congregation. They are the representatives of Christ. Following is difference between world and the church. World selects people to be their representatives, but the church represents Christ. Therefore, when we select ‘His Representatives’, we must remove all negative worldly politics and desire to favor votes. Moving forward, we will continue to lift up the new Bethel lay leaders as representatives of Christ. This is the expectation we have for the lay leaders. Instead of representing those who prefer to walk the wider road, we expect them to represent the narrow path of Christ’s heart. Although we may be citizens of this land, with dual citizenship of Heavenly Kingdom, we expect that they will not be swayed to the ways of world. We expect that they will place their foundation on the rock of Christ, and hold the dream of Heavenly Kingdom as ‘His Representatives’.
