이번 한국 일정 중에 한미 목회자 포럼이 있었습니다. 목회자들이 모여서 각자 자기 교회의 사역을 소개하면서 서로 질의 응답하는 유익한 시간이었습니다. 모두 60대 전 후반 목사님들이 모여서 무르익은 사역들을 나누며 서로 도전을 주고받기에 충분한 시간이었습니다. 저에게 가장 인상적이었던 내용을 나눕니다.

어느 교회 표어가 “인사만 잘해도 먹고 산다”는 것이었습니다. 약간 촌스럽긴 하지만 오히려 머릿속에 찐하게 남는 표어였을 뿐 아니라 그 내용은 훨씬 깊었습니다. 그리스도인의 따뜻하고 배려 깊은 인사는 고독사가 많은 외로운 현대사회를 살리는 힘이 있다고 말합니다. 우리의 인사는 엘리베이터에서 만난 사람에게 하는 수준이 대부분이지만, 진심을 전하는 관심 있는 인사로 수많은 기적이 일어난다고 침을 튀기며 말씀하시는 목사님이 아직도 눈에 선합니다.

부천에 있는 한 교회는 매주 주보에 새로 등록한 성도들의 명단이 오르는데, 매주 평균 약200명의 성도의 이름이 오른다고 했습니다. 베델교회는 매주 평균 10가정이라고 자랑하려다가, 깨갱했습니다.^^ 저희 교회는 일 년에 한번 새 생명 잔치를 하며 전도에 집중하지만, 이 교회는 전도 집회를 따로 할 필요가 없이 온 성도들이 구령의 열정으로 뜨겁다고 전해주시는 목사님의 눈에는 세상을 다 가진 듯 기쁨이 가득했습니다. 특별히 이 교회는 지역 어르신들을 위한 천원 식당을 개업해서 섬깁니다. 요즘 짜장면도 6천원인데, 잘 차린 밥상을 75세 이상 어른에게는 천원, 60-74세까지는 7000원 그리고 60세 미만 손님은 받지 않는다고 합니다. 정식으로 허가받아 시내 한복판에 식당을 내고, 교인중 자원봉사자들이 나와 섬기는데, 식당 이름이 “행복한 식당”입니다. 이 사역을 듣는 모든 목사님이 행복해졌고, 입에는 군침이 돌았습니다. 내년에 저는 꼭 가서 7000원 내고 밥 한 그릇 사 먹으려고 합니다.

또 한 교회는 출석 교인 수가 등록 교인 수보다 많은 교회라고 소개했습니다. 이렇게 할 수 있는 비밀 전략은 아이들 전도라고 합니다. 아이들이 교회 나오면 엄마 아빠들이 따라 나온다고 합니다. 그래서 방문자 중 많은 사람들이 전도되어 나온 아이들의 부모님들이라고 합니다. 이렇게 방문차 온 부모님들이 결국 덩달아 교인이 됩니다. 교인이 되는 즉시 그 자리에서 맘에 맞는 사역팀을 찾아 봉사할 수 있도록 안내한다고 합니다. 결코 손님이 아닌 주인같이 교회를 섬기도록 등록 당일부터 봉사를 하도록 한다고 합니다.

한국 교회가 힘들다 힘들다 하는데, 얼마나 역동적인 교회들이 많던지 감사만 넘칩니다. 이번 한미목회자 포럼에서 목사님들이 제일 부러워한 베델교회의 사역은 [베델 클레시컬 아카데미]였습니다. 역시 사람을 탐하는 목회자들은 이구동성으로 결국 인재 양성이 미래를 바꾸는 유일한 소망이라며, 하고 싶어도 엄두도 못 내는 일을 베델이 했다고 부러워 하셨습니다. 하나님께 감사할 뿐입니다.

Korean American Pastor’s Forum

One of the events scheduled into my Korea trip was a Korean American Pastor’s Forum. It was a beneficial time of sharing as each pastor introduced his church followed by question and answer time. Most pastors were round the age of 60 and all of them had ministries that were well and mature. We shared our ministries and challenged each other. I will share what impressed me the most from the forum.

One of the churches has a slogan that says, “Greeting others well is enough to live well.” The slogan seemed a bit cheesy, but it really stayed with me. The meaning behind the slogan was much deeper. Christian’s greeting of warmth and concern has the strength to give life to bitter and lonely world. Most of our greetings usually do not exceed that of simple acknowledgement to a stranger on an elevator. I still vividly remember this pastor who spoke passionately about how greeting with sincerity and genuine concern could bring about many miracles.

And, one church in Bu-Chun city includes a list of weekly registered newcomers on their Sunday bulletins. Their weekly list averages 200 new members. I was about to proudly share that we have average of 10 families each week, but I couldn’t^^. This church’s pastor was filled with joy. He shared how his congregation is passionate about salvation. They don’t need any special evangelism rallies. Our church, on the other hand, focuses on evangelism once a year with our New Life Celebration. This church serves elderly people by operating one dollar restaurant. Jjajangmyun nowadays costs about $6. Their beautiful meal is available for only $1 to those that are over 75 years and older, $7 to those that are 60-74 years old. They don’t accept customers that are younger than 60 years old. They obtained a business permit, opened up a restaurant in midtown. Servers are volunteers from the church. The restaurant’s name is “Joyful Restaurant”. Every pastor listening to this became joyful, and their mouths watered. I am definitely planning to go to that restaurant next year and buy the meal for $7.

Another church was introduced as a church that has greater number of weekly attendees than the registered church members. The secret to this was in evangelizing to children. When children come to church, they bring their mom and dad with them. Large number of visitors are the parents of children who have been evangelized. These parents eventually become church members. As soon as they register, they are immediately plugged in to serve in a ministry that they like. They begin serving on the very first day of registration with a sense of church ownership, and no longer a visitor.

Although we hear Korean churches are struggling, I was filled with gratitude, realizing that there are great many active churches. The pastors were most envious of Bethel Church over [Bethel Classical Academy]. All the pastors, who look for good people, agreed that our only hope of changing the future is to develop and raise up our own people. They were envious that Bethel is doing something that they couldn’t even fathom. I can only thank God
