사람이 살다 보면 자신의 뿌리를 찾을 때가 있다고 하는데, 이번 한국 방문은 저에게 그런 기회를 주신 것 같습니다. 먼저 아버지 고향을 찾아 갔습니다. 중학교 때 딱 한 번 부모님과 가 보았던 섬이었습니다. 그 곳에서 농사를 지었다고 하시는데, 통통배를 타고 수 시간을 가야 닿을 수 있는 섬이었지만 지금은 다리가 놓여 있어서 차를 타고 갈 수 있었습니다. 지금도 기억하는 아버지의 본적을 지도로 찾아봤더니 더 이상 그 주소는 존재하지 않았고, 재래시장에 들려서 번데기에 장터국수를 사 먹으며 아버지의 유년 시절을 보낸 곳을 더듬어 보는 기회를 가졌습니다. 그러던 중, 한국에 머무는 동안 아버지 청년 시절 다니셨던 교회에 가서 설교 할 기회를 가졌습니다. 지금은 고인이 되신 그 교회 원로 목사님이 아버지 결혼 주례를 하셨습니다. 이 교회 설립 50주년 기념 화보에 아버지 사진을 본 적이 있는데, 올해 70주년을 맞이하는 해에 제가 주일 강단에 서 보니 뭔지 모를 설렘이 저를 감쌌고, 마치 신앙의 뿌리에 서있는 느낌이었습니다. 아버지가 젊은 청년 시절 신앙생활 하며 신앙의 뿌리를 내린 곳이었고, 어쩌면 이곳에서 시작된 신앙이 오늘의 나를 만들었다고 해도 틀리지 않을 것입니다.

우리의 신앙은 어쩌다 우연히 지금 이 자리에 와 있는 것이 아닌 것 같습니다. 우리의 신앙은 그 뿌리가 분명히 있습니다. 시작의 뿌리를 아는 것이 중요합니다. 나의 처음은 그 뿌리와 맞닿아 있습니다. 그리고 그 뿌리를 알아야 나의 나됨이 은혜임을 알게 됩니다. 저절로 내가 지금의 위치에 와 있는 것이 아니라, 나의 처음과 마지막이 되시는 하나님의 은혜임을 알게 되는 것입니다.

하나님을 경외하는 것이 지혜의 근본이라고 성경은 말합니다(잠 9:10). 하나님을 경외하는 것이 우리의 뿌리라는 뜻입니다. 우리의 근간이고 기초이고, 기본입니다. 그래서 삶이 흔들거리는 순간이 오면 뿌리 의식이 작동됩니다. 만만치 않은 세월에 흔들렸던 우리의 모습을 보며 자연스럽게 뿌리의 중요성을 깨닫게 됩니다.

우리 교회에 많은 분은 베델이 그 신앙의 뿌리인 분들입니다. 아무리 오랜 세월이 흘러도, 어디에 있어도 그 뿌리는 잊지 마시기 바랍니다. 훗날 우리 교회 50주년 때, 70주년 때, 여러분의 자녀가 목사가 되어 이 강단에서 설교하는 날이 있을 수도 있습니다. 오늘도 그 뿌리를 더 깊이 내리는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다. 그곳에 주님의 은혜가 더욱 풍성히 넘쳐서 계속 세월 따라 흘러가는 은혜가 되기를 바랍니다.

In Search of Roots

There is a time in our lives when we search for our roots. I was given this opportunity during my recent visit to Korea. I went and visited my father’s old hometown. It’s an island which I only visited once with my parents when I was in junior high school. I was told he farmed there. It is an island that took several hours to reach in a small boat. Now, there is a bridge that connects to the island and you can drive there. I tried to find his old home on a map, I still remember the address, but it no longer exists. It was an opportunity to explore my father’s childhood by visiting local farmer’s market, eating ppundaegi(toasted larva) and jangtuhgooksoo(noodle soup). Meanwhile, I had an opportunity to speak at the church where my father attended during his young adult years. Retired senior pastor of the church officiated my father’s wedding long ago. The pastor has now deceased. I remember seeing my father in a picture of church’s 50th anniversary. I stand on the pulpit of this church, on the year of their 70th anniversary. I don’t know what it was, but there was certain excitement, like I was standing on the root of my faith. This is the place where my father practiced faith as a young man, rooted in faith. It’s probably not wrong to say that I became who I am today by his faith that started here.

Our faiths do not come by randomly. There are roots where our faiths began. It’s important to know where that root comes from. Beginning of my faith stems from that root. Once you know your roots, you realize that it is by grace that you are who you are. We don’t reach automatically where we are today. We find that it is by God’s grace, who is my beginning and the end.

Bible says to fear God is the beginning of wisdom (Prov 9:10) It means that our roots are from fearing God. This is our basis, foundation, and the norm. When we face a moment of uncertainty in life, consciousness from our roots kick in. As we look back on difficult times, we find the importance of our roots.

Many of our Bethel members’ faiths are rooted in our church. No matter how much time may have passed or where you may have been, do not forget your roots. Later, at our church’s 50th and 70th anniversary, your children who have become pastors may stand on this pulpit to preach one day. I hope grace of the Lord will continue to flow through the years and overflow more abundantly.
