성령의 역사는 참으로 아이러니(Irony)합니다. 하나님 나라가 역동적이고 폭발적으로 펼쳐짐과 동시에 그 출발점은 매우 미약하다는 것을 발견합니다. 하나님 나라는 예수님을 통하여 이 땅에 선포되고 임하였지만 사실 그 시작은 베들레헴의 마구간이었고, 징그러운 죄로 가득한 인간의 몸이었습니다.

예수님께서 십자가에서 돌아가시고 부활 승천하신 후, 사도들과 부활의 목격자들을 통하여 예루살렘 성안의 교인의 숫자가 폭발적으로 증가했습니다. 그러나 예루살렘과 유대 지역에만 국한되어 있던 모습에서 스데반이 돌에 맞아 순교하는 사건을 계기로 본격적으로 복음이 유대인들이라는 울타리를 넘어가게 됩니다. 행 11:19을 보면 “그때에 스데반의 일로 일어난 환난으로 인하여 흩어진 자들이 베니게와 구브로와 안디옥까지 이르러 유대인에게만 전하는데” 즉 이 스데반의 사건을 계기로 예루살렘에서 멀리 떨어진 지역에까지 복음이 전해지는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

또 하나 놀라운 아이러니는 듣지도 보지도 못한 이들에 의해 안디옥 교회 형성과 이방인 선교의 시작이었다는 것입니다. 행 11:20-21에 보면 “그중에 구브로와 구레네 몇 사람이 안디옥에 이르러 헬라인에게도 말하여 주 예수를 전파하니 주의 손이 그들과 함께 하시매 수많은 사람이 믿고 주께 돌아오더라” 소위 말하는 이름도 거론되지 않는, 구브로와 구레네 몇 사람이라 소개된 사람들에 의해서 이방인인 헬라인들에게 복음이 전해진 것이고, 이에 수많은 사람이 주 앞에 돌아오고 교회가 세워지는 아이러니가 만들어진 것입니다.

이처럼 참으로 가슴 뛰는 하나님 나라의 역사, 복음 전파의 역사가 어떤 특별한 논리와 탁월한 전략에 의한 것이 아니라, 아이러니에 의해 펼쳐졌다는 사실입니다. 최근 사노 요코라는 일본 작가의 글귀를 재미있게 읽었습니다. ‘나는 아무것도 모른다. 꽃 한 송이의 생명조차 이해 할 수 없다. 다만 아는 것이라고는 나 자신조차 파악하지 못한 채 죽는다는 사실이다’. 노년에 깨닫는 바, 인생은 아는 것도 아닌, 모르는 것도 아닌, 아이러니라는 사실이 참으로 공감이 되는 글귀였습니다. 결국 이 아이러니는 하나님의 일하시는 방식이 아닌가 생각됩니다.

하나님을 이해할 수 없음을 우리의 아이러니라고 읽지 않는가 생각합니다. 그러나 이 아이러니는 하나님이 일하시는 놀라운 섭리와 위대하심입니다. 우리는 그분의 위대함 속에 있습니다.

Irony of God’s Kingdom

Work of Holy spirit is truly ironic. God’s Kingdom unfolds in dynamic and explosive ways. Yet, we discover that the beginning was very weak. God’s Kingdom was proclaimed and came to us through Jesus. However, the beginning was at a stable in Bethlehem. It started from a body of man filled with disgusting sins.

After Jesus died on the cross, then resurrected and ascended, through apostles and witnesses of the resurrection, number of believers in Jerusalem increased explosively. However, after the incident of Stephen’s martyr by stoning, the gospel that was confined to Jerusalem and region of Judah was spread beyond the barrier called Jews. In Acts 11:19, “Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews”, we learn that in the wake of Stephen’s incident, gospel was preached in far off regions from Jerusalem.

Another surprising irony is that this was the beginning of formation of Antioch church and gentile missions by those who have not heard and seen Jesus. According to Acts 11:20-21, “Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.” Their names(jargon: those who have not heard, not seen) are not even mentioned. Gospel was preached to gentile Greeks by the men from
Cyprus and Cyrene, and great number of people believed and turned to the Lord, ironically forming a church.

This exciting history of God’s Kingdom and spread of gospel did not depend on some unique logic and superb strategies. It unfolded ironically, and that in itself is an irony. As we learn deep insight of this irony, we gain even deeper insight. Recently, I enjoyed reading a phrase by Japanese writer Yoko Sano. “I don’t know anything. I cannot even understand the life of a single flower. All I know is that I will die without even grasping who I am.” Average person realizes in old age that, life is not about knowing or not knowing, it is an irony. It is a writing that I can relate to. I wonder if this irony is the way God works.

We cannot understand God. We may read this as irony. But, the irony is God’s amazing providence and greatness. We are in His greatness.
