한 번은 부부 동산을 마치고 내려오는 길에 함께 있던 참가자 중 한 분이 자기는 자동차 엔진 소리를 들으면 희열이 느껴진다고 얘기 해서, ‘참 특이한 분도 많다’는 생각을 했습니다. 그때만 해도 저는 자동차 엔진 소리는 머플러를 통해서 나는 참기 어려운 소음이라고만 생각했기 때문입니다. 오래전, 제 차의 머플러에 구멍이 나서 운전하고 다닐 때마다 너무나 큰 소리가 나서 방귀 뀌고 다니는 차라는 별명을 얻었을 정도였습니다. 당연히 엔진 소리는 안 날 수록 좋다는 생각을 갖고 있었던 저는, 엔진 소리를 들으면 희열이 오른다는 말에 의문을 품지 않을 수 없었습니다.

가끔 자동차가 시끄러운 엔진 소리를 부릉부릉 내면서 추월하는 것을 봅니다. 그 소리가 얼마나 힘 있고 좋은 엔진을 가진 차인지를 자랑하며 달리는 것이라고 하니, 정말 이상한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 아니나 다를까 이번 베델 목회자 가정 수련회를 다녀오면서, 이런 차를 보았습니다. 얼마나 시끄럽게 지나가던지 꾸벅 꾸벅 졸다가 잠이 다 달아날 정도였습니다. 그때 문득 엔진 소리를 들으면 희열이 오른다는 그 성도님이 생각났습니다. 지금은 교회 출석을 잘 안 하고 계시는 것 같은데 당시 교회에 오시면, 복음의 말씀을 들을 때 ‘희열’과 ‘기쁨’을 누린다고 고백하셨던 것이 기억이 납니다.

아직 저에게 자동차 붕붕거리는 소리는 소음으로 들립니다. 그러나, 자동차 전문가 들은 엔진 소리만 들어도 어떤 엔진인지, 어떤 차량인지 심지어 무슨 문제가 있는 지도 감지한다고 합니다. 복음은 어쩌면 아주 잘 만든 자동차의 엔진 소리와도 같습니다. 저와 같은 많은 문외한들에게는 여전히 귀를 막아야 하는 잡음처럼 들리지만, 들을 귀가 있는 자들에게는 희열을 주는 소리인 것처럼 복음이 그렇습니다. 누군가에는 도저히 들어줄 수 없는 괴로움이지만 누군가에게는 생의 희열을 느끼게 하는 메시지로 다가오기 때문입니다. 그래서 복음을 양날 선 검과 같다고 합니다. 생명을 살리는 수술칼 이기도하지만, 살을 베는 아픔으로 다가오는 칼일 때도 있기 때문입니다. 복음을 전달하는 소통의 기술을 말씀드리는 것이 아닙니다. 복음의 내용이 그렇다는 것입니다.

똑같은 설교자의 똑같은 설교를 듣고 나오는 사람들의 반응도 어쩌면 둘 중 하나일 것입니다. ‘아멘’ 하고 은혜를 받고 살아나는 소망 속에 능력을 맛본 자도 있겠지만, 속으로 ‘노 멘’만 외치다가 예배당을 빠져나오는 자도 있을 것입니다. 어쩌면 이전 에는 늘 졸리기만 하던 주일 설교가 어느 날 갑자기 귀에 쏙쏙 들리는 날이 있습니다. 정말 소음처럼 들리던 자동차 엔진 소리가 기쁨을 주는 소리로 변할 수 있듯이, 복음 역시 꿀과 송이꿀 보다 더 단 말씀으로 들리는 날이 올 수 있습니다. 주여, 듣는 귀를 주옵소서!

Engine Sound and Blessed Sound

Once I was coming back from a couple’s retreat, one of attendees said that he feels ecstatic when he hears sound of car engine. I remember thinking that ‘there are some unusual people’. Until then, I thought that car engine sound came through the muffler. It must be more of a quiet noise. Long time ago, I used to drive a car with a hole in the muffler. It used to make so much noise that it was nicknamed a farting car. So, I used to think that quieter the engine sounds, the better it is. Obviously, I had questions about the person who felt ecstatic from car engine sounds.

Sometimes we see cars overtaking other cars, making loud engine noises. That sound is meant to show off the strength of car engine. That is very strange to me. I saw such a car on my way back from Bethel pastoral staff’s retreat. It was so loud that it woke me up. At that moment, I remembered this church member who felt ecstatic from hearing engine sounds. I don’t think he attends our church regularly anymore. But when he did come to church in the past, I remember how he used to confess that he felt ‘bliss’ and ‘joy’ when he hears gospel messages.

To me, a car engine sound is just a noise. But some professionals, by simply hearing the car engine sound, know what type of engine it is, what kind of vehicle it is… even detect what problem it has. Gospel is like a car engine sound from a well-made car. To strangers, it’s noise that they don’t want to hear. But for those who know what they are hearing, it brings much joy. This is how gospel is. To some, it pains them to hear. To some others, it is the message of joy of life. That is why gospel is like a double-edged sword. It is like a surgical knife that saves lives. But it is also a knife that cuts away our flesh and brings pain. That is what the gospel is about.

Responses of people listening to the same message from same preacher are probably one of two ways. Some will say amen and experience grace. They feel able in the hope of life. Others will only shout quietly ‘no-amen’ and quickly leave the sanctuary. Some days, you blissfully receive the Lord’s Day message that used to only make you sleepy. Like car engine sound that can change into sound that brings joy, there will be a day when gospel reaches your ears as words sweeter than honey. Lord, give us ears to hear!
