아이스하키 경기를 보다 보면 복싱 경기 하듯 선수들이 갑자기 스틱을 던져 놓고 서로 주먹을 날리며 싸우는 것을 심심치 않게 보게 됩니다. 아이스하키 팬들은 경기도 경기지만 선수들이 서로 싸우는 것을 보는 것도 아이스하키 경기의 재미 중 하나라고 말합니다. 그 재미 때문인지 하키 선수들치고 앞니가 남아 있는 선수를 거의 본 적이 없습니다. 운동 경기 중 몸싸움이 많은 종목은 축구일 것입니다. 그래서 주심이 경기 도중 거친 파울을 범한 선수에게 경고의 의미로 옐로카드를 꺼내 드는 경우를 종종 봅니다. 심하면 레드카드를 꺼내어 선수, 심지어 거친 항의를 하는 코치까지도 퇴장시키는 경우도 있습니다. 이기고 지는 싸움은 늘 과한 승부욕에서 나오는 반칙을 할 때가 많기 때문에 이런 경고 카드로 선을 넘지 못하도록 제재를 가해야 할 것입니다. 그런데 얼마 전 포르투갈 축구 협회 리그에서 축구 역사상 처음으로 ‘화이트 카드’가 등장해서 화제가 되었습니다. 여자 축구 대회였는데, 벤치 쪽에서 누군가가 몸에 이상이 생겨 경기가 중단된 상태에서 양쪽 응급팀이 함께 대응하는 모습에, 건전한 스포츠 문화를 보여주었다고, 주심이 화이트 카드를 양쪽 팀에 들어 올린 것입니다. 이것을 본 팬들은 환호성을 지르며 박수갈채를 보냈습니다.

심판이 하는 일은 반칙할 때 호루라기를 부는 것입니다. 모든 경기의 심판은 반칙을 가리는 것이 그들의 임무일 것입니다. 어느 선수가 잘하나를 보고 호루라기를 부는 심판은 없습니다. 승부를 가리는 세계에서는 늘 반칙이 당연한 듯 자주 일어납니다. 달려가는 선수에게 태클을 걸고, 손을 잡아 넘어뜨리고, 주심 눈을 피해 밀치고 당기는 일이 비일비재합니다. 그런 것만 보다가 갑자기 등장한 화이트 카드는 신선하다 못해 신기합니다.

우리가 꼭 기억해야 할 것은 우리 하나님은 심판주시라는 것입니다. 우리가 행한 모든 반칙을 다 보고 계시는 분이며, 또한 만홀히 여김을 받는 분도 아닙니다(갈 6:7). 심판주로서 하나님의 원칙은 ‘심은 대로 걷는’ 것입니다. “인자가 아버지의 영광으로 그 천사들과 함께 오리니 그때에 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚으리라”(마 16:27) 당연히 반칙을 했으면 공정한 벌칙을 받을 것입니다. 그러나 기억할 것은 우리 인생의 주심인 하나님도 화이트 카드를 가지고 계신다는 사실입니다. 옐로나 레드카드보다 화이트 카드를 더 많이 가지고 계십니다. 매일 큐티하며 말씀 속에 하루를 시작하는 우리에게 화이트 카드를 들고 뛰어오시는 주님을 만나는 황송함이 있기를 기도합니다.

“누구든지 제자의 이름으로 이 작은 자 중 하나에게 냉수 한 그릇이라도 주는 자는 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그 사람이 결단코 상을 잃지 아니하리라”(마 10:42)

White Card

When watching ice hockey games, you often see players suddenly throw down their hockey sticks and engage in fist fights. It’s like watching a boxing match. Aside from watching the game, ice hockey fans say that watching the players fight each other is part of the fun. Perhaps that is the reason why we rarely see hockey players with front teeth intact. Soccer is one of the sport games that has a lot of physical fights. During the games, we often see referees holding up a yellow card as warning for roughness. In worse cases, red card is held up. The player and even the coach, who engages in protest, are expelled from the field. This kind of foul often occurs from excessive desire to win. This warning card is meant to control going over the line. Not long ago, in Portugal Soccer League, a ‘white card’ was presented for the first time in the history of soccer games. This became a hot topic. It was a women’s soccer cup game. An athlete on the bench had a seizure. The game had to stop and both teams’ emergency teams responded together and collaborated showing positive sportsmanship. Thus, white cards were held up for both teams. Fans watching this cheered and applauded

Referee’s job is to blow a whistle when players commit foul. It is the referees’ job to detect foul plays. Whistles aren’t blown for players who play by the rule. Fouls occur often in a world that recognize winners. It’s not uncommon to tackle an athlete running a race, or grabbing their hands to fall, or pushing and pulling each other out of referee’s view. After seeing such things, this sudden presentation of white card was refreshing and, on one hand, amazing.

We must remember that our God is our judge. He is watching all of our foul moves and he does not neglect (Gal 6:7). As the judge, God’s principle is “reap what you sow”. “For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.”(Matt 16:27) You must receive just punishment for your fouls. However, we need to remember that God, our life’s referee, also has white cards. He has more white cards than yellow or red cards. I pray that you will be elated to meet God who runs to you with a white card as you begin each day in His Word with your QT.

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(Matt 10:42)
