On a Wonderful Day in October
Rev. Jacob Park
Almost without noticing, summer has passed and October’s autumn has now come. Whenever October comes, I am reminded of my grandmother, who served as a deacon at our church when I was in elementary school. The church where she served held an Autumn Chrysanthemum Exhibition every October. Members of the congregation would bring chrysanthemums they had grown, attach their names to them, and display them on the church steps. I still remember how, for more than a month, hundreds of chrysanthemums lined each step in full bloom, creating a breathtaking sight. Even as a child, it was so beautiful that I felt as if our church were heaven itself.
To prepare for that exhibition, my grandmother would begin planting chrysanthemum seedlings in pots as early as the beginning of summer. She would place them in the sunlight, fertilize them, and water them often so they would not dry out under the hot summer sun. She raised them with great care and devotion.
But there was one more thing she always gave those flowers. Because they would be displayed at church, she said they must also be nurtured with prayer. Every time she watered them, she prayed that they would grow healthy and beautiful, bringing joy to the congregation and glory to God. I can still clearly picture her tending to them with such prayers.
Then, on the day of the autumn exhibition in October, even as a young boy, I could sense her excitement and nervousness. Her bright yellow chrysanthemums, grown with prayer and effort, were placed on the step assigned by the church with her name. For a month they bloomed beautifully, proudly showing the love they had received from her, bringing joy to the congregation and glory to God.
Without prayer, nothing truly beautiful can bloom. October is a beautiful season because all of creation bears the fruit of God’s grace and faithful love throughout the year. How much more, then, should we reflect on whether we have been nurturing the fruits God has entrusted to us—in our church, our families, and our workplaces—with prayer and devotion? My hope is that this October may be a wonderful day when we, too, bear the fruits of prayer and the fruits of love in abundance.
