저희 베델교회 예삶 청년 공동체를 섬겼던 이현우 목사가 설교하면서n목이 터지라 외쳤던 메시지가 지금도 귀에 쟁쟁합니다. 농고, 공고 출신인 목사님이 하나님을 만나 왜 공부해야 하는지 깨닫고 하나님께 울며 부르짖다가 목사가 되고, 지금은 서울 이남에서 제일 큰 교회라는 부산 수영로교회 후임목사로 내정된 목사님이 되셨습니다. 이현우 목사님은 아들 지웅이가 가진 신병 때문에, 이곳 미국에서 병원을 다니기가 힘들어서 어쩔 수 없이 다시 한국으로 들어가시게 되었습니다. 지금도 기억하는 것은 많은 분들이 도와드리려고 애를 썼지만, 지웅이가 앓고 있는 만성 심장병과 뇌병련을 일으키는 뇌신경의 종양은 늘 병원을 다니며 의사 선생님들과 상담하며 장기간의 치료가 필요했고 미국에서는 쉽지 않은 상황이었습니다. 안타깝지만 한국행을 결정한 목사님 가정을 보내 드렸는데, 지금 생각하니깐, 아들 때문에 한국에 가게 되었고, 수영로 교회에서 행정목사로 섬기면서 성도들에게 인정을 받아, 이번에 그 큰 교회를 이끌어갈 제 3대 목사님으로 내정되었습니다.

지금 생각해 보니, 이목사님이 강단에 설 때마다 그의 설교는 설교라기 보다는 부르짖음이었습니다. 늘 간절함이 있었고, 그 간절함은 기도의 열기였고, 기도의 생명력으로 이어졌습니다. 그리고 그 기도는 늘 어김없이 응답되었는데, 기도한 것 보다 더 크게 더 좋은 것으로 하나님은 찾아 오셨습니다. 저에게는 부목사였고, 한참 후배였지만, 그의 영적 갈망과 뜨거움은 저에게도 전도되었습니다. 매 주일 설교 후에는 “목사님의 설교가 오늘 저를 살렸습니다.” 피드백을 주면서 매번 예배를 드리면서 기도로 목숨을 거는 것을 보았습니다. 그의 결론은 “기도를 멈추지 마십시오. 기도하기 위해 멈추십시오”였습니다. 항상 그랬습니다.

“너는 내게 부르짖으라, 내가 네게 응답하겠고, 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라”(렘 33:3) 전능하신 하나님께 부르짖기만 하면, 하나님의 이름만 부르면 응답하시겠다 약속하셨으니, 그것만 믿고 부르짖으면 우리의 부르짖음만 들어도 우리에게 가장 필요한 것이 무엇인지 아시는 하나님께서 답하여 주실 것을 믿습니다.

걱정할 시간에 기도하십시다. 전화할 시간에 기도하십시다. 낙심한 시간에 더 기도하십시다. 하나님의 은혜는 기도 파이프로 흘러 내립니다. 하나님의 보고 창고에서 흘러 나오는 능력도 기도 파이프를 타고 옵니다. 기도가 최선입니다. 기도가 우선입니다.

Do not stop praying; stop in order to pray

The message that Pastor Hyun-woo Lee—who once served our Bethel Church’s Yesalm Young Adult Community—shouted at the top of his lungs while preaching still rings clearly in my ears. Despite coming from an agricultural and technical high school background, Pastor Lee met God, realized why he needed to study, and cried out to Him in tears. He eventually became a pastor and has now been appointed as the successor to lead Busan Suyeongro Church, which is known as the largest church south of Seoul. He was forced to return to Korea because it was difficult to frequent hospitals here in the United States for his son Ji-woong who suffers from an illness. I still remember how so many people tried their best to help, but it was incredibly difficult to sustain a long-term treatment plan involving constant hospital visits and medical consultations for the chronic heart disease and cranial nerve tumor causing brain lesions that Ji-woong suffered from. It was heartbreaking, but we sent the pastor’s family off when they decided to head back to Korea. Looking back now, though it was his son’s condition that took him back to Korea, he was highly recognized by the congregation while serving as an administrative pastor at Suyeongro Church, leading to his current appointment as the 3rd senior pastor to guide this mega church.

Looking back, whenever Pastor Lee stood at the pulpit, his sermons felt less like standard preaching and more like a desperate cry. There was always an intense earnestness—a fervor born of prayer that translated into vital spiritual life. And those prayers were answered without fail; God always met him with things far greater and better than what he had asked for. Although he was an associate pastor and a junior to me by a wide margin, his spiritual hunger and passion were highly contagious. Every Sunday, he would offer feedback saying, “Pastor, your sermon saved my life today.” During every single service, he gave himself wholly to the Lord in prayer. His conclusion was always: “Do not stop praying. Stop in order to pray.” It was always like that.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jer 33:3). Since the Almighty God has promised to answer if we simply cry out to Him and invoke His name, I believe that if we cry out resting solely on that promise, God—who knows exactly what we need most just by hearing our cries—will surely answer us.

Let us pray instead of worrying. Let us pray instead of making phone calls. Let us pray even more in times of discouragement. God’s grace flows down through the pipeline of prayer. The power flowing from God’s treasury also travels through the pipeline of prayer. Prayer is the best way. Prayer is the ultimate priority.
